John 17

The High Priestly Prayer

17:1 When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him authority over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do. And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed.

“I have manifested your name to the people whom you gave me out of the world. Yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you. For I have given them the words that you gave me, and they have received them and have come to know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you sent me. I am praying for them. I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are yours. 10 All mine are yours, and yours are mine, and I am glorified in them. 11 And I am no longer in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. 12 While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me. I have guarded them, and not one of them has been lost except the son of destruction, that the Scripture might be fulfilled. 13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves. 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.

20 “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, 21 that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me. 24 Father, I desire that they also, whom you have given me, may be with me where I am, to see my glory that you have given me because you loved me before the foundation of the world. 25 O righteous Father, even though the world does not know you, I know you, and these know that you have sent me. 26 I made known to them your name, and I will continue to make it known, that the love with which you have loved me may be in them, and I in them.” (ESV)

3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

This is such an awesome verse and a GREAT witnessing tool. Just a couple hours ago (yes we stay up late in college) I was witnessing to a girl about how Christianity is not so much a religion as a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and God himself. We have to realize as Christians that this is an absolute gift and to know that we gain eternal life by knowing God through Jesus is unbelievable!! Let’s make sure we realize that our lives need to be centered around knowing God and knowing Christ.

14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.
15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.

Man this isn’t more prevalent than in secular college!! When people party, smoke, drink, swear, etc. I’m definitely not the norm when I say I don’t do any of those. But what we have to realize is that God calls us to be lights in these dark places. While I realize that I would probably enjoy being on a Christian campus 100x better (easily), God wants me to be in the world in order to shine His glory through the darkness of secular campus. For each of us, we must realize that because God has left us in the world, our biggest battles are temptation and sin, and while being in the world we must surround ourselves with fellow believers so we can stand strong in Christ.

Be praying that I may boldly proclaim the gospel where in needs to be heard at Case!!! God Bless!!

  2. D$ and Brett says:

D$- 11I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name—the name you gave me—so that they may be one as we are one.

This verse encourages me, not only that Christ is praying for us but also that it’s a reminder to be unified in the body and to work together for one purpose to serve Christ.

Brett- 1.) After Jesus said this, he looked toward heaven and prayed: “Father, the time has come. Glorify your Son, that your Son may glorify you.

This is such a great verse that sets a great example for us to follow that is Jesus’ whole life to glorify the Father.

  3. nelson says:

I think it is amazing how Jesus words his prayers. Mainly because he says so much, but then i realize that while he is putting a lot out there, He is giving us a very specific example of how we should pray and what we should do while we are here. We should choose to glorify God with our whole body because we need to be 100% for God. we cannot be less than that because we are not of this world therefore we can not have any of this world get in the way of our relationship with God.

  4. Beth Lauder says:

Right on, Matt! I am encouraged that you have the right attitude about how you can shine for Christ at a secular college. Way to make great use of your first week by evangelizing! I will be praying for you as you rep Christ at Case. :-)

15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one
This verse stood out to me because Jesus Himself says that as Christians we are not to isolate ourselves and remove ourselves from the World. I think that is a huge mistake that some Christians make and it is directly opposed to what Christ is saying in this chapter. We need to live in the world, but not become a part of its ideologies and lifestyles. Jesus prays that the Father will protect us from the devil as we live for God despite opposition all around us. Our primary goal on earth is to love God and glorify Him forever. one way we do that is to rely on Him to help us “shine like stars in the universe holding out His truth in the darkest place.”

  5. Gabriel Voris says:

15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.

We need to stay in this world to spread the gospel but not fall into sinful desires like many people and even some Christians have done. It just encourages me to that Jesus would pray for us as Christians that we may be protected from the world and its sinful things. I’ll be praying for you by the way Matt.

  6. Jessica Adams says:

11…so that they may be one as we are one…22…that they may be one as we are one:…23…I in them and you in me…

Jesus makes it so clear to us in this chapter that he wants all of us Christians to be united together as one. “Jesus in us, and God in Him”. As one, we need to be the ‘body of Christ’. We are all living for the same purpose, why not serve Him together?? I need to make sure I’m always a part of what is bringing glory to God… nothing else.

  7. alicia says:

2For you granted him authority over all people that he might give eternal life to all those you have given him.
3Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
4I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

This gives us an amazing look into the relationship Christ has with his father and the relationship Christ has with us. Christ was here on earth to complete the work that His father sent him to do so that we who were chosen by God may know Him through his son. I am so thankful for the work Christ did becuase it is through that work that I can know my Heavenly Father. May my desire be the same as that of Christ to bring God Glory here on earth. Thank you Jesus!

  8. Hunter says:

Matt, my prayers will be continualy with you. Keep fighting the good fight!

21that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me.

Jesus prays here that the church would be united just like He is united to the Father. We need to always be showing love to eachother so that we can be unified like Christ wants us to be. He also prays that we would constantly be in Him and the Father (reading scripture, prayer, worship, service, and fellowship); we do all this so that we can show the world the truth that is in our hearts, that Jesus from Nazerth is Christ and King of Kings! If we are united and constatnly devoting ourselves to being in Jesus and the Father, then we have the opertunity to show the world the glory of God!

  9. Max says:

3 Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.

Eternal life in a nutshell. This is what the non Christians need to hear. It’s amazing how so many people reject this simple truth. Instead of taking Christ FREE gift of eternal life, they reject it and walk away. We need to intervene and tell them why they need eternal life. We have to tell them about the consequences without it, cause they really suck. We as Christians hav an obligation to keep telling others about Christ and salvation through Him, no matter what others may think about us.

  10. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

In today’s world we see “relativity” running like crazy. Everything is based on what you think or feel and most believe that there is no truth we can hold to, but that is far from reality. Here we see that Jesus Christ has said that God’s WORD found in the Bible is TRUTH! Everything in it is truth, and that it is that truth that sanctifies us. If we are to be sanctified as believers of the Lord and growing consistently and constantly then we should constantly in the Word and meditating on its truth! There is no excuse!

NEW BLOG ON ASSURANCE OF SALVATION :)

  11. Jenaee (= says:

4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

This reminds me of how much glory we will bring God if we complete the work he gives us: Spreading his word to everyone.

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.

I love this verse because we truly are not of the world as christians but we are just stuck here in the world until we are taken to heaven. Until we die we need to glorify his name and make our time here worth something, not just time wasted.

  12. Bethany Gonzales says:

15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.
16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.
I follow up on what Gabe says. We aren’t meant to just live by ourselves with other Christians in this own private society. We were put in the World so that we could spread the gospel and tell others about what He has done. If we are not evangelizing, then we are disobeying a command that God clearly gives us. Let us not give up with telling others, for many souls are lost and may never know the way to Heaven until we approach them about it. We are not of this world, but we still need to be here. :)
Also I noticed that Jesus prays to God even though He is God. He humbles Himself before Him even though He knows that He is God. We should humble ourselves the way Jesus does and use Him as an example. We should also have that same connection with God that Jesus has where we are always talking to Him and listening to what He says. :D

  13. it's Daniel Yo! (from England) says:

24″Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

Some people think that God does not want us to be in heaven with him (i actually have) because they believe that it is too hard to get to Heaven. But Jesus wants us there and He’s rootin’ for us.

  14. Sarah G.! says:

17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

I would definitely have to ditto what Vanessa said!! Sanctification only comes from praying and being in His word daily :)

  15. Ashlyn:] says:

26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

This verse reminds me this is why i need to evangelize, not only because non believers will end up in hell, but also because they deserve to feel and know they are loved by God.

  16. christopher eriksen says:

26I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

How amazing is it to know the Father loves us as much as He loves His own Son! This just reminds me that we shouldn’t keep this to ourselves, but continually tell others about Jesus so that God might use us to bring them into the same relationship we have with Him.

  17. Mike says:

14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world.
15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.

The world is all about tolerance and acceptance, and we as Christians stand out as going against the flow. Jesus makes it clear that anyone who follows what He says will be in direct opposition with the world, to the point of hatred and persecution. The problem could be solved by simply taking all Christians out of the world, but Jesus had different plans. As long as we have breath, we have a mission to evangelize to the lost and spread God’s Word that was given to us. And we can have assurance that no matter what happens to us in this world, we are secure eternally and are being protected from Satan’s power on a daily basis, which should encourage us to be all the more bold for Him.

  18. Mike says:

just wanted to clarify, by that last Him i meant Jesus Christ, not Satan…

  19. Austin Payne says:

7Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you

This also applies to the changes in people’s lifestyle when they become Christians. Because when people say “Wow, you’ve really changed” you say it’s all Him.

  20. Kyle Johnson says:

15My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one.

Why God doesn’t take us out of the world once we become Christians is because He wants us to spread the Revival, evangelizing the Gospel and making new disciples.

  21. db says:

I liked verse 3 and how it says that eternal life is only obtained through Jesus! many people will present different ways to get eternal life, but the only way is our Lord

  22. DVworkum says:

17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

K first off I liked what Vanessa said. This verse really popped out at me though because I found it quite encouraging. This is because I know that sanctification is not somthing that we do on our own, it is only through God. Reading his word alone would do nothing if it were not for his work in us. Reading his word is extreamly important and he uses his word to help us grow. It was encouraging to me to know that God wants us to grow. anywho….

  23. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world.

This verse stood out to me because it is basically Jesus talking to God the Father and Jesus is saying that just as God sent Him into the world, He is now sending US to do HIS will. This is such a cool concept because we are sent to carry Christ’s name all across the world! Just another great reminder to step up our evangelism in our everyday lives!!

  24. MJ says:

16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.

We live in this world but we are not supposed to be of this world. We are to look to God and do what he tells us to do. Not what the world is telling us to do so that we look cool. We are called to be like Jesus. Not like the world.

  25. Haley Litz says:

17Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

This verse stood out to me right away. As Christians, we are sanctified. We are to be sanctified by the truth- the Bible, God’s Word. If we aren’t reading and meditating on the truth, how is sanctification going to take place? We filled out spiritual growth charts at beach night tonight and those will really help me to read and meditate on the truth more and more.

  26. jordan anderson (: says:

16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.

i love this verse because it reminded me that we need to be set apart. As christians we should be living IN the world but not OF the world.

This entire passage really reminded me that we need to be living 100% for Christ. Being set apart and living our lives to be like Christ.

  27. zach senger says:

16They are not of the world, even as I am not of it.

I really like this verse alot. It says that we as Christians are not of this world and do not belong here. It is comforting because everything that is going on in this world. But even though we are not of this world we need to be using our time to the fullest while we are on this world, through spreading the Gospel and building the body of Christ up….
