Psalm 44

Come to Our Help

To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah.

44:1 O God, we have heard with our ears,
our fathers have told us,
what deeds you performed in their days,
in the days of old:
you with your own hand drove out the nations,
but them you planted;
you afflicted the peoples,
but them you set free;
for not by their own sword did they win the land,
nor did their own arm save them,
but your right hand and your arm,
and the light of your face,
for you delighted in them.

You are my King, O God;
ordain salvation for Jacob!
Through you we push down our foes;
through your name we tread down those who rise up against us.
For not in my bow do I trust,
nor can my sword save me.
But you have saved us from our foes
and have put to shame those who hate us.
In God we have boasted continually,
and we will give thanks to your name forever. Selah

But you have rejected us and disgraced us
and have not gone out with our armies.
10 You have made us turn back from the foe,
and those who hate us have gotten spoil.
11 You have made us like sheep for slaughter
and have scattered us among the nations.
12 You have sold your people for a trifle,
demanding no high price for them.
13 You have made us the taunt of our neighbors,
the derision and scorn of those around us.
14 You have made us a byword among the nations,
a laughingstock among the peoples.
15 All day long my disgrace is before me,
and shame has covered my face
16 at the sound of the taunter and reviler,
at the sight of the enemy and the avenger.

17 All this has come upon us,
though we have not forgotten you,
and we have not been false to your covenant.
18 Our heart has not turned back,
nor have our steps departed from your way;
19 yet you have broken us in the place of jackals
and covered us with the shadow of death.
20 If we had forgotten the name of our God
or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
21 would not God discover this?
For he knows the secrets of the heart.
22 Yet for your sake we are killed all the day long;
we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.

23 Awake! Why are you sleeping, O Lord?
Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever!
24 Why do you hide your face?
Why do you forget our affliction and oppression?
25 For our soul is bowed down to the dust;
our belly clings to the ground.
26 Rise up; come to our help!
Redeem us for the sake of your steadfast love! (ESV)

    this psalm oddly reminds me of the chronicles of narnia…. hmmmm. :- o

    You’ve got God who was literally fighting alongside his people at one point, but for whatever reason he has fallen asleep(23 Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep?) and ‘seemingly’ stopped helping in their struggles.(9 But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.)

    But despite all of this–being entirely abandoned–they still held true to his word.
    (17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant. 18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.)

    That’s how we should be living; even when it seems that all is wrong and God has truly left your side, we should -still- continue to have faith in him. Nothing should be able to take us off our the path were on.

  2. Dave Hosford, praying for Pastor Bobby's family rest on vacation says:

    Nice post j.

    Ps 44:9 But now you have rejected and humbled us; you no longer go out with our armies.

    It might “seem” to suck when God disciplines us: it certainly has material consequences but it is ALWAYS for our good (Ro 8:28) and look what the cycle is: sorrow, repentance, correction and right living under God’s blessing!

    Check out how Paul describes it in 2 Cor 7:8-11:

    “Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— 9yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. 11See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter.”

    So even when we are in dire straights because of God’s discipline, like the Isrealites were in this Psalm, we can rejoice in God’s ultimate restoration and redemption from hell! Let’s live llike it today! Maranatha!!!

  3. Nicholas Bonetto says:

    Psalm 44:22, “Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

    Before I became a Christian, I had to know what the costs of being a Christian was, and one I knew was death (not spiritual death). I am considered a sacrifice for God, I give everything to Him until I die. I need view myself as a sacrifice and a slave for God, I need to humble myself.

    !!!MARANATHA!!!

  4. Spencer Camp says:

    This is exactly what Ben was talking about last night!

    Summary TAN:

    The Sons of Korah are having a bad day (or possibly week, month, or years). They have suffered some terrible defeat by their enemy: “You made us retreat before the enemy, and our adversaries have plundered us”(Ps. 44:10). Yet they still acknowledge God: “In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever” (Ps. 44:8). They claim their innocence of deserving such suffering and in the last few verses the Sons of Korah plea to God: “Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love”(Ps. 44:26).

    Here we can see that in all circumstances whether rich or poor, healthy or sick, winning or losing God is still to be praised for his goodness. We should also realize that even though we follow and are under the unfailing love God of the God of the universe, suffering is still apart of a Christian’s life.

    Lord I pray that the next time I lose, become sick, or something bad happens in my life that I would still acknowledge your greatness and praise you. May I trust that in all things you work for the good of those who love you, and are called according to your purposes.

  5. Chelseaaa says:

    26 Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.

    The Lord is all powerful. Only He can rise up and redeem us. Only He can forgive us of our sins and grant us eternity in Heaven.

  6. Jenae Naeeee (= says:

    What these guys are going through is kinda a “Bad Day” and their response is awesome!! They arent being selfish or turning away from God; In fact, they are doing just the opposite! Like we learned last night, they are turning to God’s promises and unfailing love and worshiping him and crying out to him(praying). They trust him with all their hearts to protect them. Truly a great example for me (=

  7. Allie Moorefield(: says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
    Most of the time, when i overcome something or i win a battle, I forget to thank God and give Him praise. Instead, I think that someone caused my victory. But like it says in verse five, “my sword does not bring me victory.” Only God can bring us victory and strength!

    20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god,
    21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?
    These are great verses. It says that if we forget the righteous name of God or stretch out our arms to a foreign God, God would discover it! God knows every single thing about us! He knows the secrets of our hearts and we cannot hide anything from God. Its like God has each and every one of us on an x-ray machine. He can see right through us and also everything in us. God is the only person that knows you for who you are, so we should never lie to God!!!

  8. Mike says:

    17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.
    18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.

    The first thing that the Sons of Korah did when they faced defeat was to examine their hearts to see if it was the cause of sin. As it turns out, it was not; they were so confident in that that they later go on to say that even in the secret places of their hearts God would not find that they had turned aside to idols. But we need to follow their example. Sometimes, difficult experiences in our lives are trials sent to test us and to draw us nearer in dependence to God; but other times they are discipline from the Lord in response to sin. I need to make sure that I am searching my life and asking God to search my heart so that I can be aware and repent of any sin that might be causing God to have to discipline me, so I can instead live in His blessing.

  9. Ian H. says:

    In this Psalm we see the sons of Korah telling us that they were men who genuinely trusted/had faith in God:

    3 “It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.”

    6 “I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.”

    They acknowledge that their successes and the good things that have happened to them have not happened because of what they did, but because God gave them victory. That’s exemplary faith!
    But, even though they were doing what was right and trusting in the Lord, they faced hard times:

    17 “All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.
    18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.”

    And we will face the same thing. In fact, it’s guaranteed to happen, if we’re living a godly Christian life (2 Tim. 3:12). We may not be in the wrong or in sin; we may be giving it our all for God’s glory. But we still will, at some point, face hardship for Jesus. Whenever this may happen to me, I pray that I’ll be ready for it and will turn to God in my time of need. Lord, help me to trust in you.

  10. Ben Blakey says:

    Yes, this is definitely another Psalm where the authors are having a bad day!

    One thing that stands out to me is their confidence in God in both good and bad times. When they are talking about their victories, they say, “In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.” (v. 8) When they are talking about their defeats, they say, “Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.” (v. 26)

    This reminds me that on my best days and my worst days, I should still be confident in God. This means I need to trust him everyday, I need to live for him everyday, and I need to praise him everyday.

    MARANATHA!

  11. Billy Morris says:

    17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.

    This is a great verse for someone I should try to copy. The sons of Korah are going through terrible trials, and they are forced to overcome hardship. Rather than losing faith in God and getting angry/ frustrated with him, they acknowledge God and express how they have not forgotten him and will remain faithful to him. I need to follow their example and never get angry at God rather just embrace the hardship(s). This is all pretty similar to what we talked about last night in small groups.

  12. Brooke Miller says:

    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

    God is so good! When I think on the big picture of God and who he truly is, its indescribable! There is no one like the Lord, he is so amazing, holy and powerful! There is so much to praise and worship God for, and to boast about! After reading this, I am going to think about all the things God has blessed me with, and make a list of things to praise the Lord for in my life and to serve others and not myself!

  13. Riley Hancock says:

    I verse three it talked about all the things that did not win the war it was God how let them win it is because they followed Him to the end and we need to do the same. The war that is to come we need to be ready for God’s return and we are fighting for Him by making new Christians in the world we live in. Glory to God.

  14. Zach V says:

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them

    Just like God gave them victory in battle, He will give us victory over sin. Many times in the scriptures we see fighting sin as a battle. Although we have to do something, God gives us the victory; we could never win without Him. I like to think of fighting sin as David vs. Goliath. Did David have to do something? Yes, he did, but God gave Him the victory. A small stone wouldn’t have never killed the giant but God intervened and won the day.

  15. Boyd Jorden From the Great Northwest says:

    This psalm is a great reminder that ALL things come from God. The psalmist makes sure to credit the Lord for all of his successes. I want to be able to always push aside my pride that way and acknowledge God for the good things that He provides. And even though it’s painful when we sometimes suffer despite holding strong to our faith in God, and we may not understand why we experience certain struggles or losses, we need to remember that God is perfect; his justice is perfect; he doesn’t make mistakes. To complain about the injustice of our struggles is to suggest that we know better than God–that God misses the boat sometimes. No, no, my friends, the boat misses God…or something like that. The point is, when we face trials (such as a fiery furnace or a den of lions), we need to still firmly trust in God’s perfect justice and, as the psalmist does, in His “unfailing love”. He is holy.

  16. Kelsey says:

    25 We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.
    26 Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.

    I like this verse becuase it reminds me of who I truly am and of the great mercy of God. We, as humans were made of dust, and to dust we will return, as the Bible says. But the Lord changes all of that.We go from dust to living with im in eternity. How amazing is that! Sometimes I feel like I dont really put that in perspective and see it as the great miracle and symbol of h=His love and mercy that it really is. I think that hearing it so many times ccan cause me to become immune to the amazingness of Gods love and mercy. I love verses like this becuase they remind me of it. I am going to go put these verses oon my mirror so they become a daily reminder of God’s awesomeness.

  17. Nachooooooooooo says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    I love these verses because they show how the psalmist totally depends on God. He doesn’t have faith in his own power, and He knows that without God, there is no victory. In my life i need to make sure that I am fully relying on God, rather than my own strength. Without Him I am nothing.

  18. Trembling with fear from the almighty God, B says:

    25 We are brought down to the dust; our bodies cling to the ground.

    This is exactly how we should be in our prayers. Down on our knees humbled before the Lord. This reminded me of Revival where Bobby had us pray on our faces to Jesus…what a difference it made! I was no longer distracted by everything around me and I invisioned myself before His throne…it humbled me definitely. And here we see that David and his people are doing the same thing many many years ago. God humbles those He chooses and I am glad He chose me. :)

  19. Natalieeeeee says:

    Totally goes with what Ben preached about last night! They are having a “bad day” and unlike most of us who would just have a huge pity party for ourselves and be all over-dramatic, they are praising God! They are thanking Him for giving them victory over there enemies! “In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah” (v.8) AND most importantly they are asking God to help them when they lose!! “Awake, O Lord! Why do you sleep? Rouse yourself! Do not reject us forever.” (v.23) & “Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.” That for me is the hardest thing to do! It is easy to thank God and praise Him when every thing is going well! It’s when things aren’t going well…. I need to be praising God in hard times by praying, reading His Word, and worshiping Him!!! MARANATHA (:

  20. Max says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    When i saw this verse it jumped out at me. Yah, I’m not shooting arrows at people and stuff, but it still does apply to me. Every victory at anything doesn’t come from me and what i have done, but from God. Whoever wrote this psalm realized that the only reason he succeded at anything, in this case it was a battle or war, was because of God. And today in my life, anything i accomplish or win is the exact same, only through God was i able to do that. That’s why the psalmist said he doesn’t trust in his own power, but in God’s power to bring him victory. Like in sports, i’m can’t trust on my own skill or strength, if i do i won’t be able to win. If you trust in your own power instead of the Lord, you can’t succeed. That’s why in everything that i do, i CAN’T rely on myself. It’s only God that makes things work the way they should.

  21. Elise says:

    1 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
    2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.
    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    Loved this Psalm! The beginning especially convicted me because it reminded me that I also need to be studying the Old Testament! In the Old Testament we see God prove his glory, power, and sovereignty in every situation. His love for His people caused them to win impossible battles, and I need to apply those lessons to my everyday life! Verse 8 goes on to say that “In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever.” I want to turn to God in every bad situation or battle I am fighting, because only when I cling to Him can I truly succeed, as they did in the Old Testament. This Psalm backs up last night’s message about pouring out my soul to, reading about, and worshipping the Lord in every good or bad situtation! Amen!

  22. Lizzie Holt :D says:

    17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.
    18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.
    19 But you crushed us and made us a haunt for jackals and covered us over with deep darkness.

    What an example these three verses are!!! The sons of Korah are undergoing some really bad times and they know its because for some reason God is not with them in battle. But they don’t get mad at God, they don’t say “why me?” or “this is so unfair!!” and/or complain continually about how bad God has made their lives. They PRAISE Him, and keep His covenant and do not forget Him they say. Their life is not so hot right now but they continue to trust in God. This reminded me of beach night last night: when we have a bad day, we should NOT get mad at everyone and God and focus on us and how bad OUR life is. We need to have our eyes to HIM and NOT OURSELVES. Count the blessings He has given us and pray to Him to help us get through the day in way that pleasing to God. I need to do this because even today hasn’t started off as the best day ever.
    God, help me to glorify You today, and act they way You want me to. Help me to not focus on myself and how bad my life is but instead to worship You and focus on how privileged I am to live in the house I do, and have a family and a great school and go to CBC. :D AMEN

  23. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

    I like verse 3,”It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.”

    I like this verse because it tells who really does everything and decides who comes out on top. GOD made everything and therefore everything belongs to him and since everything belongs to HIM HE can do whatever HE wants with it. That includes making one army win while another fails. Making one man leader and another not. GOD is in control of everything Spiritual and physical if he wants one man to become a CHRISTian then that person would become a CHRISTian.

    CYA

  24. Matt Whyte says:

    2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.

    God does pretty much whatever it takes to make his son Christ known among the common people. no action is to small. God wants his word spread around the nation

  25. 20Kyle Johnson10' says:

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    It truly is amazing what God has done for the Israelites in the begginning of the Bible like Exodus, promising to take them out of Egypt (Exodus 6:6) fulfilling His promise by sending the Egypt with plagues and miracles(Exodus 7-11). Then after they left and Egypt wanted them back God splitting the Red Sea straight down the middle and all the Egyptians drowned (Exodus 15:4)!
    Then Israelites defeated their enemies to settle in the land God promised the Israelites, they defeated all but one and that one enemy. They were defeated because God was not with them. Achan took the silver and gold from the land of Jericho after the Israelites defeated them, the Israelites were unaware. The Israelites were defeated by Ai, and Ai did not have a lot of warriors. In fact the Israelites thought that the fight at Ai was going to be easy, Israelites sent spys to see what they were going up against and they thought it was so easy that they only sent down only a couple thousand of men. After the battle, Joshua cried out to God and God said someone sinned (Joshua 7:7-12) and they found out it was Achan and they killed Achan and all of his family and even his animals by stoning them, then they burned up all of them and all that Achan had (Joshua 7:24-26). Then after that, they went back to Ai and destroyed them and the rest of the other enemies to get to the promise land!

    22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

    This is huge!!!!!!! I’m asking myself, am I willing to face death all day long, doing it in the name of God? the answer, is not always. If they are willing to face death because they want to stand up for God, then how much willing should I be to stand up for God at my high school. Christ fits this verse perfectly! He was the lamb that was slaughtered for our sin on the cross, He faced death all day long for preaching with such authority.

  26. ۞۞Ŧŗɇɤϕŗ ђɵśᵮɵŗȡ ۞۞ says:

    in the first 8 verses in this chapter it talkes about how God is helping them to win in war and how they are not why they win, but from nine on it talkes of how GOd is no longer helping them win in war and they are being crushed, but he says that they are still dying for God name. so in their time of hardship, they did not falter the stayed strong in the faith. i need to be nore like that, never giving in because of the sircumstances.

    c u all at on saturday

  27. Jackson Dahl says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    The Sons of Korah are so right here.. I can do absolutely nothing without the Lord as my strength. Without him, I am a worthless, helpless sinner who deserves eternal punishment. But with him I can do all things- (Phillipians 4:13) This gives me so much courage for when I face difficult times.. Knowing the GOD OF THE UNIVERSE is on my side.. That’s pretty LegiT!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!

  28. P.J. says:

    I love the confidence and trust in God that the Sons of Korah showed even through times where they thought God had forgotten and rejected them (v.23 & 24). But the suffering that they had to go through was inevitable for them, and God uses ALL things (especially sufferings) for the good of those who love him (Rm. 8:28).

    “Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.”

    1 Timothy 3:12 says, “In fact, everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,” I need to be preparing myself to go through persecutions as I enter a new high school where I don’t really know anybody. Jesus says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” I want to be fearless as I enter a new school, and be prepared to share the Gospel with all the people I interact with. Lord give me the strength to represent your name amidst many who are on the path to destruction, and use me to teach them what you have taught me and shown to me through your Son.

    Marantha!

  29. Dominic S says:

    Wow there are so many great verses in this chapter

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    I love how these people dont just celebrate “their” victory, but instead attribute it all to God and praise Him for His defeat of their enemies. This just emphasizes that everything is possible only through God.

    But then, these guys have trouble in their lives, and you expect them to turn away from God, but instead not only do they keep serving God (v. 17-18) but they see this as a chance to -die- for their Lord, like sheep sent to slaughter (v. 22). This just moves me so much and it kind of adds on to Ben’s message last night about turning to God on your bad day, and I dont think that I will let my “bad” days keep me from serving God anymore.

  30. 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?

    God knows everything! Even though I tell myself that God knows everything, I “try” to hide things from God which is really silly of me. He knows my real true self and it is pointless to try and pretend to be something I’m not when He made me and accepts me for who I am. He knows my true motives and my hidden secrets and my past I find it really comforting that God loves me more than I could ever love myself and forgives me. Praise the Lord!

    26 Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.

    aww this is a sad pslam but I like how the ending turns out because he seems to know that God is with him and is confident that the Lord will redeem them because of His unfailing love.

  31. Katie Slusher says:

    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah. 26 Rise up and help us; redeem us because of your unfailing love.

    I’m loving the humility that the Son’s of Korah display in this Psalm. As they cry out to God in the final verse of the chapter, they are in turmoil because their enemies have overtaken them and it has appeared that God has abandoned them. However, even in their distress, they still recognize the unfailing love of God. They also are quick to give Him the glory when He grants them victory over their enemies in the beginning of the chapter. I want to be like the Sons of Korah, who give God glory in the good times and in bad. Even when bad days come they are worshipping God.

  32. 8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

    Katie I am going to piggy back on what you just said in noticing that the Son’s of Korah are giving God the glory for their victory but they also call out and give Him glory even when they face adversities. I want to be like them, I want to boast in Him and trust Him in ALL situations and praise His name in the good and the bad because HE IS GOD!

  33. Sarah G.! says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    The Sons of Korah are pretty cool!! In distress they call on the Lord and put their trust in his plans, not their own. They glorify God knowing that he is the only one who could save them in times of persecution and battle. What magnificent examples!! Just like what Ben was talking about last night, how do I react in times of affliction?? I know that I don’t always remember to pray and praise him!! These verses are just another great reminder for me to trust in him and not myself in troubling times. :D

  34. Beth Lauder...back from Santa Barbara and back on SOTD! says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

    The psalmist shows a high view of God in these verses. God alone is responsible for any military conquest he has encountered. This is a humble attitude with a God-honoring focus by giving the Lord all the credit for any victory he has won. As I read these verses I was praying that I would rely totally on the Lord for victory against any enemy in my own life. When I battle against sin or any difficult circumstance it is God alone who defeats my enemy and He deserves all the praise! Thank You, God for coming to my aid and being worthy my trust. If I trust in myself, people or other earthly things I will be disappointed again and again. It is only in You, the omnipotent God of the universe that I will find victory!

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    This verse is so great! It tells you so much about the greatness that God does and the wonderful things he has done for us. These people thank God for their victory, giving him all of the credit for what he has done. They dont just go around thinking how great they are for winning the land, giving credit to no one but themselves, but they praise the Lord for guiding them and giving them all they have. This is something i have to work on everyday. Praying to the Lord in pure gratitude and thanks for all of the wonderful things in my life and in the world. And as we talked about last night at beach night, also praying to him in my times of trouble, no matter how big or small the trouble may be. For if it is by God we have what we have, then isnt it also by God that we have our happyness as well? Having a bad day because you feel like something is missing, or because you are just in a bad mood may mean that you are missing not something of the world, like the right outfit or a homework assignment ouve forgotten, but it may be that you are missing the Lord in your wantings for things of this world. Praise to the Lord everyday! and MARANATHA!

  36. Matt Crichton ((2010)) says:

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    It is verses like this that reming me who God really is. The Old Tesament is filled with stories of His power and might. The battle is the Lords. I need to put all else aside and trust comepletey in Him. Why? Cuz He loves me and will guide me through my struggles. Maranatha!

  37. kelly causky says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    We need to realize that God is always in control. The Lord gives us everything, not ourselves. People of the world rely on themselves to “succeed.” But as Christians, we should have all of our trust in God, all of the time.

  38. Ashlyn--:) says:

    22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

    i like this verse it is a reminder to me that Christ can easily take our lives at any moment. He died for us, so we can live with Him… Always thinking about this makes me want to continually do the right thing :)

  39. hunter 2010 says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.
    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

    I love these verses! It is so easy for me to get caught up in the things of this world and put my tust in them. Instead of giving God the praise and glory, I often think success comes from somehting I have done or something I have. These verses encourage me to always remember my true source of strength and the reason for anything in my life (including life itself)…God!

  40. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame

    I love this verse because the psalmist is saying how he does not put put his trust in worldly things like bows and swords. He puts all of his trust onto the Lord, knowing that only the Lord can give him victory over his enemies. I need to put my trust in the Lord in everything I do to, not putting my trust into worldy things or things of the flesh.

  41. Michelle [Slave For Christ] 2010 says:

    Last night was a great night and it was an amazing way to end beach nights for the summer and for all the seniors!

    YESSSS!The sons of Korah know what they are talkin about!!I love how they give all of the glory to God and not to themselves!
    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;

    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    MMMMM!I need to remember that God deserves all the glory!He is the ultimate King and Ruler over all things and it is because of Him that i am living. God is the reason why i have knowledge, health, strength, all those sorts of things. I need to be working who heartidly as unto the Lord and i need to be sure that i dont give myself credit for what im blessed with.
    In verse six it says that their sword does not bring them victory. It is the sword of God that can! In Ephesians 6:17 it talks about the sword of the Spirit. Out battle is spiritual and we need to fight and depend on Gods word and on God through prayer. See, our own protection of the world cannot protect us. God can. I need to strengthen myself more by digging into Gods Word. It is by God that i can do things, it is by God that i can work and walk and move and breath and talk and listen, taste, touch, smell. God is the reason why i can fight temptation. It is because of His word that we can resist temptation. Through Him all things are possible…Through God, not myself. God is powerful. He deserves all the glory!Maranatha!!!

  42. Laura Johnson says:

    This psalm really reminds me of beach night yesterday. Even when they had a bad day they were trusting in God. I want to have that kind of attitude.

  43. Murphy Danahy says:

    2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.

    GOD decides who lives and who dies, who flourishes and withers, he is like the gardener of the nations, his care is the only thing that keeps us alive. If he dislikes a certian plant he can withhold the nutrients for it’s life or uproot it. He controls all. Therefore we must make sure that we make our lives pleasing to him. Isn’t it great to be on his side?

  44. Matt Lawler says:

    17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.
    18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.

    No matter what happens to us we must stick with the Lord, everything on Earth is temporary and meaningless compared to eternity.

  45. Rebekah Foreman says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame
    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

    Sometimes you get unfocussed and dont trust God but we need to trust in God always for He is there always and with Him we will be victorious everytime. I will boast not of myself but of God for He deserves all the Glory of the World and everything that happens. PRAISE GOD!!

  46. Karsten Klein says:

    17 All this happened to us, though we had not forgotten you or been false to your covenant.
    18 Our hearts had not turned back; our feet had not strayed from your path.

    No matter what happens you can’t let your self turn away from god but keep praising him even when you feel like you’ve been forgotten.

  47. Marissa Ramirez says:

    I loved the last beach nite. It was a great way to end them. Well not forever ofcourse. Having a bad day is always a tough time to go through, but praying to the Lord is always an option for you. I think going to the Lord on a bad day is a great reminder for me instead of going back to my old ways and listening to the worlds music. I know God has a reason for everything. He is always giving is a lesson to learn each and everyday. We all should be thankful to live the next day. Even on a bad day be thankful

  48. cristina brower says:

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    WHAT AN AWESOME VERSE! They are praising God for helping them win the battle because without God, they would not have won! Its sad how many people are excited that THEY overcame a certain sin in their life, when they could have not overcome that sin of it wasnt for God’s help along the way! Philippians 4:13!!!

    MARANATHA!

  49. Sara L. says:

    22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long; we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

    Often times I will start thinking about how much better off I am now that I am a Christian, what Jesus did for me, a sinner, what this means for my destination after this life….and then I’ll have to stop and realize all I am thinking about it me when I really should be thinking about Christ more. This verse really stood out to me because I know that I’m not living this life for me…it is for Christ. I am His slave now and I need to have that mindset in ALL my thoughts. As a Christian I have experienced and will experience many persecutions…”for your sake”…this life is about bringing glory to God and asking Him to work through me for His sake. I need to go out this school year and be much more open about sharing the Gospel with other people even if it will make me look “stupid” or “uncool”. Those things don’t have any worth. Christ is everything.

  50. Mady says:

    20 If we had forgotten the name of our God or spread out our hands to a foreign god, 21 would not God have discovered it, since he knows the secrets of the heart?

    I need to always remember that I cannot hide ANYTHING from God. He knows everything, he is every where, and he is all powerful. Nothing is out of his sight. He “know the secrets of the heart” and i need to realize that even things I think I am getting away with here on earth, God knows :)

  51. Callie says:

    Wow, for the first half of the chapter David is totally victorious and happy. For the second half, however, David is really having a bad day.

    5 Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    David is doing everything in God’s name. He realizes that it isn’t anything he does, it’s everything God does. He doesn’t trust his bow or his sword to give him victories, he trusts God to do that. I need to rejoice in God’s name when something goes well. It is not anything I do, it is everything God does that deserves praise. I need to trust in God and not on earthly, soon to be destroyed junk.

  52. Natalie cannavo thinks this is an AMAZING chapter says:

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them. ………….
    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; 7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    The Sons of Korah completely put their trust in God! What an example! They knew they didn’t have to rely on swords or other weapons, but they knew that God would protect and deliver them! They trusted that God would make them victorious. This reminds me of the verse that states: “With man nothing is possible, but with God, all things are possible.” These men knew that and lived it and showed it, especially when it seemed most impossible!!

  53. Austin 2010 says:

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    We forget that everything we accomplish in our lives is through no fault of our own. Without God to provide, we would be nothing, have nothing. It something that I need to remind myself of daily

  54. jeff Modugno 2010 says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    This chapter is great. I love how they trust God in the good and the bad. I learned that I must give God the glory in the good days and the bad ones.

  55. Fëanor says:

    5 Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes.
    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;

    These verses, along with much of the Psalm, talk about reliance on God. Although sometimes I think about me and about how I’m doing so great or planting seeds in people’s hearts, I need to learn to place my reliance on God. Matthew 19:26 says, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” If I trust more in Christ to work through me, my ministry will be much more effective.

  56. Lauren Goudgeeee says:

    mmmm im feelin this chapterr!
    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.—A lot of the times I do not realize how much God is involved with my life evreyday! God is control of the good and the bad and it is all apart of His plan so I need to remember that all of this is His plan and its the best for me. I really need to be praying and thanking God for what He puts in my life either good or bad because either way I am growing closer to God in my relationship when I communicate with Him more. These verses really made me realize how much I need to be thanking God for all of the times He has got me through and has blessed me with! MARANATHA!!!

    I encourage everyone to keep posting everyday! Keep up the great posts everyone! :D

  57. I see the contrast in this chapter about David thanking God for all the victorious battles he has won, and praising him for his mighty power. Then the second half of the chapter he is pleading to God asking him why he doesn’t deliver him and help him in the time of need. Sometimes this happens in my life where one day I’m praising God for what hes doing in my life to help me be bold to my friends and have courage, and others I feel so down and overcome and sad. But David’s example here shows that he came to God on the good day and on the bad, and that is what Pastor Ben taught us to do. To go to him through prayer, hid Word, and worship.

    3 It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them.

    I picked this verse because it talks about how we cant do anything on our own. That me evangelizing to my friends is not how much knowledge I know or how much I can lead them to Christ. God talks through us! It is done by nothing we can ever do. I need to make sure that I dont even try to take over things in my life, and let God lead.

  58. Evan McKee says:

    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

    I like how in the first half of this chapter David gives all of the glory to God and takes none of it for himself. I need to work on this because sometimes I forget to give the Glory to God and instead think of how hard I work to achieve something. I am really competitive and need to work on doing things for God not to make myself feel better.

  59. Jasmine Douglas says:

    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah

    What an awesome Father we serve =)
    I thought this passage was pretty right on:
    Jeremiah 9:23-24

    23 This is what the LORD says:
    “Let not the wise man boast of his wisdom
    or the strong man boast of his strength
    or the rich man boast of his riches,

    24 but let him who boasts boast about this:
    that he understands and knows me,
    that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness,
    justice and righteousness on earth,
    for in these I delight,”
    declares the LORD.

  60. it's Momma Burke Yo! says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame.

    I can hide nothing from the Lord and nothing can be accomplished with out Him! This is a great reminder for me on the importance of prayer and remembering to invite God in on every level and every decision of my life. I am nothing without Him and I can accomplish nothing without Him.

  61. Never Take David Personal says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;
    7 but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame

    So there are a few things I really like about this verse…1st off it is a perfect counterpart to verse 3….2nd it has such a great aplication today. What is it that we find ouselves trusting in…grades to get into a good school, money, men….what we need to be trusting in is God. The fact we can loose money…haha…we see that in the economy today, men can fail us, and somethings in life just aren’t fair. But, God never fails.

  62. it's Daniel Yo! says:

    6 I do not trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory;

    I need to remember sometimes that God is the only thing that we can truley rely on. He is in control of everything and that should assure us that everything is going to his plan…whereas anything else in the word has no complete assurance, because God is controlling everyhting

  63. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 44

    1 We have heard with our ears, O God; our fathers have told us what you did in their days, in days long ago.
    2 With your hand you drove out the nations and planted our fathers; you crushed the peoples and made our fathers flourish.

    4 You are my King and my God, who decrees victories for Jacob.

    During times of trouble are we prompted to remember all of the great things that the Lord God has done? This Psalm shows us how this generation remembered the redemptive work of our Heavenly Father. As we see in this passage and still to this very day the mighty works of our God have been passed down from generation to generation so that all may hear and know the great things He has done. They knew that the victories of Jacob were only due to the unfailing love that God had for His people. When we find ourselves in suffering and pain I pray that we will be strengthened and encouraged to follow in the footsteps of our fellow brothers in the Faith. This Psalm shows us a real example of people who prayed, knew the truth (Word of God) and praised God with worship for the faithfulness of His mighty providence. If we are truly in Him our suffering will be met by comfort, strength and God’s unfailing Love.

  64. josh senger says:

    8 In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Selah
    this is how i want my life to look. i want my life to reflect a life of boasting in christ all day long. when we get to heaven we will be praising His name forever and i want that to start here on earth!

  65. Bri B says:

    Freshman girls 4ever !!! ;)

    18 Our hearts had not turned back;
    our feet had not strayed from your path.
    22 Yet for your sake we face death all day long;
    we are considered as sheep to be slaughtered.

    —————————————————-

    18 That as a Christian I have not changed teams, I’m on God’s team and I’m not going to change that, my feet are still walking on his path; my life is in his hands.

    22that every I deserve to die for our sins but we don’t have to because Jesus took our spot on the cross. We are referred to in the bible as sheep cause sheep are the dumbest animals, that’s what we are Dumb. But God loves us that much to send his 1 Son to die in our spot.

    MARANATHA IN 5 !!! be ready
