John 16

16:1 “I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away. They will put you out of the synagogues. Indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God. And they will do these things because they have not known the Father, nor me. But I have said these things to you, that when their hour comes you may remember that I told them to you.

The Work of the Holy Spirit

“I did not say these things to you from the beginning, because I was with you. But now I am going to him who sent me, and none of you asks me, ‘Where are you going?’ But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; 10 concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer; 11 concerning judgment, because the ruler of this world is judged.

12 “I still have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come. 14 He will glorify me, for he will take what is mine and declare it to you. 15 All that the Father has is mine; therefore I said that he will take what is mine and declare it to you.

Your Sorrow Will Turn into Joy

16 “A little while, and you will see me no longer; and again a little while, and you will see me.” 17 So some of his disciples said to one another, “What is this that he says to us, ‘A little while, and you will not see me, and again a little while, and you will see me’; and, ‘because I am going to the Father’?” 18 So they were saying, “What does he mean by ‘a little while’? We do not know what he is talking about.” 19 Jesus knew that they wanted to ask him, so he said to them, “Is this what you are asking yourselves, what I meant by saying, ‘A little while and you will not see me, and again a little while and you will see me’? 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman is giving birth, she has sorrow because her hour has come, but when she has delivered the baby, she no longer remembers the anguish, for joy that a human being has been born into the world. 22 So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you. 23 In that day you will ask nothing of me. Truly, truly, I say to you, whatever you ask of the Father in my name, he will give it to you. 24 Until now you have asked nothing in my name. Ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.

I Have Overcome the World

25 “I have said these things to you in figures of speech. The hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figures of speech but will tell you plainly about the Father. 26 In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf; 27 for the Father himself loves you, because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God. 28 I came from the Father and have come into the world, and now I am leaving the world and going to the Father.”

29 His disciples said, “Ah, now you are speaking plainly and not using figurative speech! 30 Now we know that you know all things and do not need anyone to question you; this is why we believe that you came from God.” 31 Jesus answered them, “Do you now believe? 32 Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me. 33 I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” (ESV)

8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment

This is verse 8. So it is saying when the Lord comes that he will convict all the Non- Christians because of their sin and they will feel more guilty than they have ever felt. Then they will have to face judgement and after thats over they have to still go to Hell. That is very sad for the unbelievers. Thats why we as Christians need to evangelize to those people so they don’t get sent there and they wont have to face the Lords wrath of the seven bowls. I remember evangelizing to these high school kids at the Irvine Spectrum with Vanessa Vanden Bosch and they were saying so you want 3/4 of the people on this Earth to go to Hell. They obviously don’t understand a clue about what were saying to them. They also asked, ” Why are you even talking to us, because you don’t even know us? We obvioiusly replied because we care about you and we don’t want you to suffer eternity in Hell. So they just accepted that they were going to Hell and didn’t even care. That was very sad to just walk away from, but it’s a good thing we evangelized to them because that might be the only time they ever got influenced by somebody.

  2. DB says:

22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

That needs to be our mentality as a Christian everyday. Nothing the world will do to us should put us down, because in reality, we have the Lord’s second coming to look forward to! The things and trials on this earth should not even phase us when they happen! We all need to not be afraid of anything this world dishes out at us, but instead fear the One who can destroy our souls in hell forever

  3. Beth Lauder says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

At the beginning of this chapter Jesus told His disciples that they would soon be facing persecution to the point of death. That sounds depressing, but Jesus also tells them about two very important forms of help that they can rely on. The first is the Holy Spirit and the second is prayer to the Father in Jesus’ name. In verse 33 Jesus promises the disciples peace in the midst of the trials that are certain to come if they rely on the Holy Spirit and prayer. That got me thinking about my own life and times when I have faced trials. I have had peace and victory in these trials when I rely on God and not myself. No book, medication, or person can give the comfort during tough times like God. This verse inspires me to have the right response the next time I encounter hardship!

  4. Agreed Beth! Awesome comment :)

    NEW BLOG BTW

  5. MICHELLE :) says:

22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

i totally agree with what derek said.i am so excited for the second coming of the Lord.of course i can say im excited!i mean, i get to spend an eternity with my Father.
Although we face trials here on this temporary earth, we dont even need to worry.WE HAVE IT GOOD!okay, when we face trials, we have the ability to automatically give it all up to God.how awesome is that.we dont deserve such greatness.
then we get too nervous to evangelize, which we shouldnt because we have the holy spirit in our hearts, and Jesus will give us the right words.we have nothing to fear except for God.
that totally makes me overcome with joy!
but look, at the end of this verse it says, “and no one will take away your joy”.
I CANT WAIT TO GO TO HEAVEN!!!
just think, sometimes we are soo happy here on earth, but its temporary.there is a way to have everlasting joy.and that is through jesus christ.
knowing this, i will not hold back on sharing the gospel.we have the truth, the only truth.and we need to share it!…ITS THAT IMPORTANT.

    MARANATHA!

  6. Gabriel Voris says:

31″You believe at last!” Jesus answered.

It is sad to see how long it took for the disciples to believe
Jesus came from God. Jesus did so much that nobody else could do but they just started believe Jesus came from God this late . Great comment by the way Shane. There is a lot of people we need to evangelize to out in the world that have not heard the word of God.

  7. austin says:

I like these versus because it reminds us what it will be like.
2In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.

3And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am.

4You know the way to the place where I am going.”

  8. Jenaee (= says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

AHHHH I love this verse! I love how it says tthat in him we may have peace, not talking about the “peace, love happiness” hippie kinda peace, but one where we are at rest in him and find joy. This verse is such an encouragement because if we are in God and he has overcome the world, so can we! We just have to keep our focus on God and make him our number one priority and goal!

  9. Jessica Adams says:

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This is one of the most comforting and powerful verses I’ve read in a long time!! It is so true that we WILL have many troubles in this world. But as Jesus said, we need to take heart and get through these things with Christ by our side. Jesus has overcome this world! Wow, I love that part because it lets me know that if I’m on God’s side, I have nothing to fear.

  10. Beth Ann says:

I loved this verse today because its so refreshing to know the Lord is coming back and taking us with him!…. MARANATHA

  11. Max says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

We all know there is trouble out there in the world. There are a ton of evil things trying to make us sin. But in this He came to defeat all of those things! How great is that? Whenever we are tempted, we can remember that Christ will overcome whatever is tempting us. We can stand up against the temptations, knowing we all are tempted, because with Christ has defeated those things.

  12. D$ says:

2They will put you out of the synagogue; in fact, a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God.

Jesus is telling his disciples how things are just going to get from bad to worse… The religous leaders will throw them out of church, and even kill them! And the have so much faith that doesn’t worry them as long as they have Christ. They are more worried and grieved that Christ is leaving them, and going to father then looking death in the face! Lets pray for faith like that!

  13. Sarah Gonzales says:

22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy

What a comforting verse for us!! NO ONE will be able to take our joy away!! MARANATHA!! I can’t wait until I see the Lord one day, and all of us as christians should be rejoicing daily!! But it also encourages me to evangelize to the people in my life who aren’t christians, knowing that they will not have the same joy we will have when we see Jesus if they do not hear the gospel from us. We must be praying for new creations everyday. :)

  14. Cristina Brower says:

33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

ahh what an amazing verse!! we all go through troubles and hardships i our life but to know that Jesus is by our side is so comforting!!
    Jesus has overcome the world!!!

  15. christopher eriksen says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

This kinda reminds me of Bobby’s last message at Revival. Christ has overcome the world and made us right with God, and we should be so excited and so looking forward to being with Him in eternity that even though we may face troubles, they wouldn’t phase us but that we would push through them as we seek to glorify God, who we love more than anything else. I want to have joy like that, completely focused on Christ where truly nothing else matters and where I am constantly looking to bring people to Christ so that they can have the same joy.

  16. Bethany Gonzales says:

wow I do agree with Beth Ann. it is reminder that the Lord is coming back and we need to be prepared for our Lord’s return! Spread the news about Jesus! Proclaim His name throughout the streets! Tell everyone you know! And I also noticed how Jesus told His disciples that they will mourn for a while but will rejoice later as they see the Lords return! Let us not give up and always rejoice! For we know who our God is and what He’s done for us! There is joy found in every situation and we can discover it by remembering what our God has done for us and His unending love! ;D

  17. Spencer Camp says:

13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

It is amazing to hear that when we evangelize to others we don’t have to depend on our own knowledge. The Holy Spirit will bring to mind things that we learned in the past, which gives me all the more reason to not fear people, and to only fear God. These verses also reminded me of our true home which is in Heaven, MARANATHA!

  18. Hunter says:

13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

14He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

As Christians we have this Spirit of truth that Jesus refers to! I think this is a super awsome gift that God has given us and that I need to thank God for it way more; it is so valuable. It is like getting the best gift ever while being a Christian before we even get to Heaven…MARANATHA!!!!!

  19. Ashlyn:] says:

33″I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

what a comforting verseeeeee! i love it…another reason to be bold for Him. We should have peace in Him because HE over came this world.

i agree with Jenae, great comment;]

  20. Kyle Johnson says:

22So with you: Now is your time of grief, but I will see you again and you will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy.

This life in the world is going to be tough and struggles with all the trials and persecutions, but it will not be like that in Heaven and New Jerusalem, we will be with the Lord, Jesus Christ and there is nothing better than that, and better is one day in His courts than a thousands elsewhere, how can anybody take our joy away when we are with God in Heaven. Marantha!

  21. 8When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment

This verse tells us that when God comes He will convict and judge the non-Christians and then they will finally realize that they should have repented of their sins but it will be to late. God will condemn them to hell for eternity. Like Shane said, this is why we need to be evangelizing as much as we can to turn as many people we can to Christ in our life time.

  22. D$ says:

    MARANATHA!!
Just thought I would join the maranatha party! Christ is coming down and He is coming soon im going to post a few verses about to return of Christ since we talk about it so muchhh…

16For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first.

That is going to be legit!! I can not wait till I hear the sound of that trumpet!

44So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.

Lets be ready for His return by defeating sin, and telling people about Him!!

  23. J'ames says:

23In that day you will no longer ask me anything. I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.

24Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.

This does not mean that you can get anything just by asking. But through God’s name all that you desire will be given to you. Let us not ask of worldly things but for eternal gifts. To store up in heaven.

  24. Dan Lauder says:

13But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

This a great reminder for me that God the Holy Spirit will guide and lead me into doing the right thing in life. I need to spend less time thinking and more time praying.

  25. MICHELLE :) says:

    i agree with J’ames:)
and everyone else!i love coming on here!its so awesome to see everyones point of view on these verses:)

  26. Matthew Richards (from Cleveland) says:

27 No, the Father himself loves you because you have loved me and have believed that I came from God.

MIND-BOGGLING!!!!!! Although God loves us simply because he is a loving God, here we get the sense of a very passionately strong love, that of a FATHER, because we have become children of God because we believe in Christ (John 1:13). What a loving God we serve!!!!!
