Psalm 42

Book Two

Why Are You Cast Down, O My Soul?

To the choirmaster. A Maskil of the Sons of Korah.

42:1 As a deer pants for flowing streams,
so pants my soul for you, O God.
My soul thirsts for God,
for the living God.
When shall I come and appear before God?
My tears have been my food
day and night,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”
These things I remember,
as I pour out my soul:
how I would go with the throng
and lead them in procession to the house of God
with glad shouts and songs of praise,
a multitude keeping festival.

Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God.

My soul is cast down within me;
therefore I remember you
from the land of Jordan and of Hermon,
from Mount Mizar.
Deep calls to deep
at the roar of your waterfalls;
all your breakers and your waves
have gone over me.
By day the Lord commands his steadfast love,
and at night his song is with me,
a prayer to the God of my life.
I say to God, my rock:
“Why have you forgotten me?
Why do I go mourning
because of the oppression of the enemy?”
10 As with a deadly wound in my bones,
my adversaries taunt me,
while they say to me all the day long,
“Where is your God?”

11 Why are you cast down, O my soul,
and why are you in turmoil within me?
Hope in God; for I shall again praise him,
my salvation and my God. (ESV)

The sons of Korah were legiT. Anyone who actually thirsts or pants for God has got some to have spiritual street cred. They are some Bible guys I would like to meet!

“When can I go and meet with God?”
S.O.T.D, until we see his face!

  2. “Why are you downcast, O my soul?”

I need to praise God in times of trouble because He put me in those situations for a reason. God is always with us when we are saddened, disturbed, and downcast. God has saved me from the eternal suffering of hell, He is my savior and He deserves so much praise.

    come o lord.

  3. Ryan Cox says:

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Man, this would make a great ’70s worship song…
May we be a generation & church body who truly pants for the Living God. That means thinking & meditating (no, not eyes closed, lotus stance) about Him, his will, his perfection, his love… all the time. In a society with so many distractions that become priorities, this can be tough. If our souls truly thirst for God, our decisions won’t simply be between good & bad, but between good & better. Thirsting for God doesn’t just mean avoiding sin–although important! It also means striving to make decisions that actually please Him because we’ve “thrown off every encumberance” & fixed our eyes on Him.

  4. j. watkins says:

it’s cool seeing the amount of faith that these guys have.
when things go good–they worship god
when things go bad–they still worship god.

i think the moral of this psalm is that nothing can take away the faith we have in our savior.

“11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

  5. Chelseaaa says:

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

The desire for the Lord is so great that they can feel it physically. I want nothing more than to feel it. MARANATHA

  6. Ben Blakey says:

4 These things I remember as I pour out my soul: how I used to go with the multitude, leading the procession to the house of God, with shouts of joy and thanksgiving among the festive throng.

It’s interesting that in a tough time, the thing this Son of Korah misses the most is not success, happiness, or fun with friends, it was fellowship with and worship of God. This just goes to show how much he really did long for God.

I want the highlights of my life to times of fellowship and worship, and every time I get the chance to do those things, I shouldn’t take it for granted.

See everyone at Beach Night tomorrow night, where we get to fellowship, worship, and enjoy the beauty of God’s creation at the Beach!

  7. Michelle [Slave for Christ] 2010 says:

For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.

This attitude is so important to have, especially living in the century we live in now. Each year, it gets worse, and each year, the end times are more and more near. When it talks about panting for water, it kind of reminds me of that parable about the rich man and Lazarus. When the rich man had everything here on earth, he still lacked what Lazarus, the poor man, had- GOD! They both died and the rich man went to hell and he cried out for the smallest drop of water on his tongue because it was so painful and hot in hell! He wanted that water so badly, so so badly! He wanted God to send angels down to tell people on earth to follow God so that they wont end up in the agony he was enduring- and is still enduring to this day!
I feel that from reading this passage, i am convicted to long more for Christ. I need to be realizing how Holy God is and how set apart from Him i am. I need to be wanting to be with him sooo badly, as if it hurt to be apart from Him one more day! This world is so corrupt and i should be longing to be with the one who is holy and who is set apart from this evil world. He is who i want to be with!

    Maranatha Maranatha Maranatha!

  8. Mike says:

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Thirst isn’t just some feeling, or an intellectual idea; it is an actual physical need. When you are thirsty you crave water, because without it you suffer and will even die if you go for more than a few days without it. And here the Sons of Korah are saying that this is the way they depend on God! Can we say the same of ourselves? Through constant intake of and meditation on the Word, a vibrant prayer life, and memorization of the Scriptures, we too can come to a place where we feel this dependent on God. But if we are already in the habit of going days without this kind of relationship, then how can we say we really need it on a daily basis like this? I need to be resolved to live a life with this kind of relationship to God, built on a foundation of daily doing everything I can to get more and more of Him, never being satisfied with where I’m at.

  9. Oh I love this Psalm…LOVE IT! I love it because it is such a picture of me in trial, it is a picture of how I long for the Lord in the reality of my dependence upon Him. It is also a picture of how God has refined me in reminding me that in those moments of despair, weakness, contriteness or whatever your lot of sorrow may be you need to REMEMBER Him, and come running to Him, and cling to Him and the most practical thing…talk to yourself, stop listening to yourself! We so ofthen listen to ourselves, our flesh and it is in no way going to encourage us or give us hope so therefore in those moments when we don’t “feel” close to God or “feel” like He is listening or whatever we may not be “feeling” we have to remind ourselves of truth. Oh God may I always remember your Truth and in moments of despair run and cling to You!

  10. Jenae Naeeee (= says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Love this verse because i just picture how thirsty i am after i run and how much i want water, well i just imagine that same thirst, but for God!! Thats awesome and i should have that everday! Just wanting to be in his work and needing it! Cant wait for the day when he comes! Maranatha (=

  11. Nachooooooooooo says:

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

MMMMMMM….Maranatha! I love these verses because they show how desperately the psalmist needs and desires the Lord. I need to make sure I am living like this, sold out, only thinking about God, desperately craving His return!

  12. vsunshine says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Amen!!! In the morning and evening I will meet with God. I personally cannot describe the amazing feeling of thinking about getting into God’s word and the state I am in after I have just prayed or read His word. The excitement and eager expectation of my thirsty soul needs to be replenished by His word and through communication in prayer. But, in the verse it aslo implys the excited hope to meet with God in heaven. Maranatha!
But David in this chapter of Psalms was in low spitits. He felt abandoned by God and his soul was hungry to be refueled by God. And in David’s low spirits he had a more intense yearning to leave this world and be with God in heaven. David must have been going through a tough trial yet he still searched for God’s help and still would praise Him. (v.11)

  13. Matt Whyte says:

8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.

God is always with you no matter the time day or night he is always watching over you. David knows that the Lords amazing song will be sang to him all night because he is all for the Lord

  14. K. Johnson 2010 says:

For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This Psalm is not written by David, but the “Sons of Korah.” This first two verses are awesome! This Psalm again reminds me of last weekend’s sermon “Maranatha Mindset” when it says “when can I go and meet with God?” The writer can hardly wait to meet the Lord God! This also reminds me of last beach night, if we our soul thrist for God then we would be reading His Word and praying!

  15. Brooke Miller says:

8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me— a prayer to the God of my life.

mmmmmmm this verse is comforting! Our God is so loving and powerful. Knowing and having the assurance that the Lord is always there for me, and that he will never leave nor forsake me is mighty and awesome to know. I am so thankful for everything God has blessed me with, and for scriptures and how we can live a life pleasing and glorifying to God almighty! I attain more knowledge from the word every time I read and its awesome to be able to have that opportunity to be alone with God and to apply what he has commanded me to do. After reading this, I am going to go out and love others, just as Christ loved me!

  16. 11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

What the psalmist does here is genius: He talks to himself!

When he is feeling down, he tells himself to look up and put his hope back in God. When he is falling back, he reminds himself to look forward to another opportunity to worship God.

Inspired by Scripture of the Day I wrote a blog called: Talk To Yourself

Check it out and leave me a comment: http://www.compasschurch.org/blogs/

  17. Nathan Ortiz 2010 says:

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior…

This is just so amazing that even in the times of trouble the sons of korah just want to praise God! This is like in Job when God puts his whole life in satans hands and he takes away everything he has and gives him boils on his whole body and YET he STILL praises God!!

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
    One word:

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!

  18. LG says:

Wow!!!!!!!!!! This was a great chapter!!!!!!!!! I to want to be one who every moment of my life I will be striving to want to be with God and also live to glorify God because I know the Lord is coming back! So I need to live like today is the day! MARANATHA

  19. Tanner says:

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 11,”Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

I like this verse because this is what I want to be able to do. I want to be able to praise GOD when I am in the worst of situations or in the best of situations because GOD has made us and has given us every right to praise HIM and no right to curse HIM because HE made us died and rose again for us and offers us all a way for eternal life. I need to remember these things whenever I even think things aren’t going good for me because GOD has done way more good for us then we deserve.

  20. Shelby says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This verse is so amazing because it really shows me how much I should want God! It reminds me that I should focus more on him and long to meet with him and have quiet time with him! I need to be in his word and praying daily!! I can’t wait for him to come!!!!

  21. Melissa Cox says:

I love how the psalmist tells himself to focus on God even when things are really bad. He reflects inwardly, questions himself, and redirects his own thoughts to God. I want to thirst for God all of the time like this psalmist!

  22. Murphy Danahy says:

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Do our souls thirst for GOD from the moment we wake in the morning until we fall asleep in the evening. Is our greatest regret that we do not feel closer to GOD or that we do not spend more time in our presence? GOD is the one desire we truly need, we need to desire to know him.

  23. Jeff Modugno 2010 says:

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.

This is great. It makes me think do I want MARANATHA or am I just thinking of my self and want things of this world. I need to be praying for MARANATHA and striving to serve God each day.

  24. Lauren Goudgeeee says:

    ellloo peoplee!
3 My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”—This verse reminds me that there are people out there who are going to persecute me because of my relationship with God and I look forward to that because if they are then I know I am standing firm in my faith by standing up for what I believe in! I plan on being ready for when people are going against me and that the only thing I care about is God and that He is LORD over everthing!! I am going to be working on making my relationship with God much better and how it should be!

    stoked for beach nightt!

  25. Lizzie Holt back from vacation says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This is awesome!! This verse sets the example for how much we should want God and long to meet Him. My focus needs to be more on the coming of God so I can be ready and hopefully not in sin when He does come. Maranatha!!

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and
6 my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

I love these two verses because the psalmist is talking to himself. Wondering why he is in despair when he knows that God is there. I’m going to start asking myself this question and pray about it too when I’m in despair for my God is there, now and forever. What an amazing thing we as Christians are able to say!! But it also made me stop and think, “if I can say He’s always there, He’s also there when I’m sinning, even if i think no one’s there and just maybe it’s small enough He wont care or notice.” WRONG!! God is always there and i need to remember that as I go through my every day life. If I remember either for comfort or conviction, God is always there.

  26. Riley Hancock says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Our souls should be living for you all the way it should be thirsty for you and your word. We should be more ready for the rapture so that we can be with you.

  27. hunter 2010 says:

    This pslam is soooo legit!

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and
6 my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon—from Mount Mizar.

The psalmist in these verse gives us a great example on how to deal with depression and anxiety. Instead of turning to himself and his past accomplishments to make him feel better (pride, which leads to greater anxiety) he turns to God and God’s provisions of grace in the past to find hope (faith). He remembers the beauty of God’s creation (a result of God’s glory and power) and specific places where God had blessed him. This encouarages me to find my confidence in God and remember His goodness in the past so that I can faith in His grace for the present and future!

  28. Meisha Preston says:

As Pastor Bobby said, the psalmist is reminding himself and talking to himself all throughout this psalm. When I am down and discouraged I need to talk to myself and remember that God is good, all the time.

  29. Kyle Shackleford says:

11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Even in times of trouble, I need to remember to always put my trust in the Lord. I need to make seeing God my biggest desire, because seeing His face will be the best experience of my life!

  30. Eric Walker says:

My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This is a great verse and it easily describes the attitude all Christians should have. I pray that we all have the MARANATHA mindset and wake up every morning wondering, “could this be the day that I get to see Jesus?” How awesome will it be when we get to see Jesus for the first time and get to meet him and the clouds and talk with him. IM SOOO EXCITED!!!
    MARANATHAAAAAA

  31. Boyd Jorden says:

I love reading this psalm for the same reason I always loved singing the 70′s worship song in church (lol, Ryan). I like the comparison of God to water because it’s such a simple but powerful way to relate how God is the only thing that can truly satisfy us in life; He’s what’s truly life-giving. He should be what we thirst for, and, unlike actual water, we can never drink too much of Him! As some have already pointed out, our thirst should never wane. Like Bobby preached at beach night a few weeks ago, God doesn’t change even though my emotions/mood might change. If I’m down or feeling far from God I should be quick to remind myself–or sing–as the psalmist here does about God’s unfailing greatness. Makes me want to jump into some worship songs right now! Make a joyful noise!

  32. P.J. says:

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”

The attitude that the Sons of Korah showed in these verses is awesome! The writer relates his desire for God to a deer drinking water; just as a deer consumes the water, needs the water, and is satisfied by the water, so I should be with God and his Word. I need to be joyfully wanting and needing God’s word, consuming God’s word, and being graciously satisfied by it. In verse two, the writer is so pumped to go and meet with the Lord, whether he’s referring to prayer or actually meeting God in heaven! I want to have this attitude each day, that I would be excited to meet with God in heaven, or to just talk to him through prayer!

  33. Jasmine Douglas says:

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

These two verses are talking about the hopeful soul. It’s so important to talk to yourself and to God. There is a huge difference between listening to yourself and talking to yourself. Most of life’s unhappiness comes from listening to yourself. So every time you are troubled or you’re having a bad day, I encourage you to start talking to yourself more. Be in control of your thoughts and what you think about throughout the day. Sing worship songs and praise God for the little blessings he gives. Our hope is in God =)

  34. Mady says:

Psalm 42:11 “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

When I am sad, or down I tend to be a bit selfish. I just think about how sad I am, and how bad I’ve got it. When really , I should be focusing of praising God! He loves me through Christ Jesus, and I need to remember that continually, and praise him for it!! I need to put my hope in God, and know that he will help me through whatever it is I am going through :)

  35. jwade says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

I cannot wait until the day i will see the face of God! he is the living water that i need to be thirsting for all of my life. i need to direct my mind more towards God and less towards things like football. i need to grow in my MARANATHA mindset. also from setting my eyes to Him i need to be more bold than i am now. i need to stand up and tell people on my team to stop cussing even if they are seniors.

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  36. Callie says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This verse really illustrates how much David wants to meet with God and see his face. His very soul thirsts for the living God. I need to have the same kind of attitude. My soul should thirst for God, and I should have a MARANATHA mindset. I need to look forward to when I meet God face to face and prepare my life now so that I am ready for that wonderful day.

    See you tomorrow night!

  37. wesley wong says:

this psalms is a very poetic one. it has the same line twice:
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
its saying that when times are bad, but your hope in God, and praise him. for He is good :)

  38. Allie Moorefield(: says:

David is such an amazing person! I hope to meet him someday. According to this psalm and many others, I need to be more like David! David longs and thirsts for God. God is His only support. I need to be more like David in so many ways!
Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
This is a great verse! It must be important because it was in the psalm twice! Everybody goes through hard and rough times in life, and we need to put our hope in God and praise Him, because He is our Savior and God! We need to trust God with everything we have! Because God is good and he is the ONLY one who will ALWAYS be there for us!

  39. billy morris says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

This has got to be one of the best maranatha verses in the whole Bible. I think that I really need to have my soul thirsting for God more and gain even more passion for him. Here, David is just longing for maranatha, and he is definitely not afraid of dying becasue he knows how much better heaven is that Earth. All Christians should have that mindset..it is the only way to be!

    Maranatha

  40. Zach V says:

1 For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.

A deer runs all through the woods so he is thirsty for nothing less than water. God provides us spiritual water; in Him we can find joy. LORD, let me turn to you only for rest and the quench of my soul for you are the only one who can bring it.

  41. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Awesome verse! David wants to go and meet God. He wants more fellowship. I want to be like him too. I really need to continue to read my Bible more. Sometimes I drift off and procrastinate and say oh I’ll do it later and then I’ll do it the next day and after that it’s sunday until I finally pick up my Bible. I don’t want to do that again and put God off. I want to thirst for Him more and more and reach deeper into His Word. that’s what I’m going to pray for. I remember someone saying God is how I breathe. That statement stuck and impacted me so much.

  42. Jackson Dahl says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Talk about Marantatha? This is the attitude I need to have! The Sons of Korah’s souls thirst for God!! Now that is excitement for his coming back. They ask when they can go and meet God. This inpatience proves how much they want to see God. I can totally use these guys as an example on how to be excited for the Lord’s coming!
    MARANATHA!!

  43. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

3 My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”

This verse just stood out to me because it reminded me of a band that I usec listen to called Suicide Silence. THey had a song called Unanswered and in the song they continually say “Where is your God?” This just makes me think about how many people in this world today live like there is no God. I pray that I take it to the streets without fear and i would boldly proclaim the gospel to those people that are lost and ask questions like “Where is your God?”

  44. Laura Johnson says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

I love this verse! Just like we need water to survive physically we need God’s Word to survive spiritually. And Jesus Christ allowed us to have a relationship with God and we are able to come openly to Him and talk to Him whenever we want. Our God is so amazing!

  45. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

Aaahhh. I long for this day. Seeing God face to face on the day I am invited into Heaven. I can’t even imagine seeing God on that day…I know I wouldnt even be able to look upon his holiness. But the thing about this verse is, I struggle with it. Sometimes I don’t feel that thirst for God, like I need him more than water or I need him in order to go on living. That fire inside me is such like a roller coaster. Some days God is on my mind all day, and others I simply forget to read my Bible. I wish I had a constant need and want for God and his Word daily. I do look forward to the day I get to see him, but right now, I need to pray for that fire inside of me. This song reminds me of this feeling….
I don’t wanna go through the motions
I don’t wanna go one more day
Without Your all consuming passion inside of me.

I need that passion, and I need to pray for it.

  46. Kelsey says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

I feel that sometimes this is what my life is like. I find that when I set apart time for God separetely I get more out of my time with Him and I am better focused. I think that I need to set more time apart to spend with the Lord and also more times a day. I like this verse because it reminds me.

  47. Dominic S says:

10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

David is telling God that he is saddened by the fact that others doubt the Lord, not because he believes them but because they are ignorant to the power and glory of God. He then tells himself to trust in the Lord and praise Him, and God will lift him out of his pain. I think is this is an amazing way to overcome this type of situation, especially in high school. I am hurt inside when people tell me there is no God, or they mock God. But God tells us that we shouldn’t let it make us doubt God, but instead pray to God for his intervention in showing them the way. I will definately keep this in mind next time I am faced with this situation.

  48. Snowmann 2010 says:

11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

I am having multiple things in my life occur right now where I often feel overwhelmed. I Pray God will hear my call and retrieve me. I must remember, like the psalm says, to put my hope in God and to praise his holy name.

  49. Rebekah Foreman says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

MARANATHA!!!! This reminds me of the the sermon Bobby gave this past weekend. My soul thirsts for God everyday and I can not wait to meet Him. It is imaginable.

  50. Feanor says:

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

The writers of this Psalm have a wonderful way of expressing their need for God. In my life, I should replicate this longing for God. One of the ways I can satisfy this longing is by getting in the word. I need to read more than just a chapter a day. Second, these verses talk about meeting with God. The closest we can come to that right now is in prayer. I definitely need to pray more.

  51. Maddison Nadeau :) says:

For the director of music. A maskil of the Sons of Korah. As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.

i love ryan cox’s post on this! This is SUCH a good Psalm. Everyday we should thirst for God. We should want him more than anything and let that govern us. Praising God in every single thing we do, and doing everything we do in the glory of the Lord our God. God is great! God is SO great, and we sinners do what we do for ourselves. To stop that, and to start doing what we do for the love of God…that is true christianity and true love of the Lord

  52. Katie Slusher says:

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?”

Boyd- thanks for the great reminder about Pastor Bobby’s message from Beach Night a few weeks ago. When I don’t thirst for God as the psalmist does in these verses, I need to be quick to remind myself of God’s unchanging love and mercy. At Beach Night, we talked about listening to worship songs to get our thoughts/emotions back to the right view of God. Tonight I jumped on my God’s Love playlist and listened to “Cannons”- “I’m so unworthy, but still you love me.” Praise the Lord for His unfailing love! I’m looking forward to the day when I’ll be worshipping my God in Heaven. Maranatha!

  53. Matt Crichton ((2010)) says:

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.

This is a great verse. The question is, are we panting for God? Just as we need water to survive, we also need God and his Word. We dont go days without drinking water and we should not go days without reading scripture. Ecourage people to keep posting ant be reading the Bible daily. Maranatha!

  54. Sara L. says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

If I have a strong relationship with God this is how I should feel. If I am thirsty all day long, yet never drink water the whole day….then I could be described as foolish. Why then, would I not talk to God in prayer? But not only should I be praying to Him every day, I should also be longing for the time when I will meet Him. My thirst should be insatiable so that I rely on Him more and more; praying that one day I will see Him and be with Him forever.

    MARANATHA!

  55. Natalie Cannavo says:

    This Psalm is my favorite!!!

1 As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. 2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

David had a genuine thirst and need for God. He knew he was nothing without Him! He compared an animals fierce desire for water to survive to his flaming desire for the hand of God on him! He was passionate about the Holy Spirit living in him! He had a hunger to be with the LORD! He manifested his MARANATHA mindset!!!!

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and 6 my God……….

I loved Pastor Bobby’s blog on this verse! It might seem crazy to the world when we talk to ourselves, but it helps! If we are down or depressed or oppressed by the enemy like David felt, we can “stir thyself” and realize that we need to get up and be joyful in the LORD!

————MARANATHA IN TEN MINUTES!!!!!!!! ARE YOU READY?????———–

    =)

  56. Evan McKee on his iPod touch says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

God is so amazing. It’s incredible that no matter how many pleasant things there are in the world, we are better off choosing him than all of them. I cannot wait to meet him and will live my life for that moment.

  57. Never Take David Personal says:

so….what can we learn from the Psalmist here?

The biggest thing we see from him is his desire for God. His heart longs to worship God. Even when everything in life seems to just not be going his way, he seeks for the Lord. I want to have that same desire to worship God. I mean really life is going prety good for me, I’m health, have a good family and friends, I should have an even stronger desire to worship God than the Psalmist…

  58. Dan Blankenship says:

    Psalm 42

Yearning for God in times of distress

7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me.

While reading this Psalm I was reminded of a time in my life when everything was wrong. Thank God for His unfailing love and faithfulness. The Holy Spirit was pressing upon me and I thought that I was just experiencing a tremendous amount of bad luck. If you find yourself crying out to God and He seems to be far away, just remember that your Heavenly Father knows your every suffering. Sometimes the toughest times are a wakeup call from God leading us to do his will and not doing things our way with our own set of rules. If we are doing things our way and not God’s we are sure to be met by his heavy hand. Our Heavenly Father just like an earthly father disciplines his children to get them on the right track.

Heb 12:7 7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? 8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. 9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! 10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. 11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

  59. Christa Blakey says:

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

I definitely am taking notes from this SOTD from how the Psalmist is discouraged and down and yet he talks to himself in a way that refocuses his heart on God. I need to learn how to talk myself out of getting discouraged from looking around me and even at myself and instead to look to him and really hope in him by praising him no matter what is going on or how I feel.

  60. Shane McCuistion 2010 says:

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

This is definitely a verse that I should be saying to myself daily! I am gonna admit that when I am going through tough times and struggles, I hardly ever turn to God and ask for his help. I usually just think about how i can fix things myself without the help of anybody else. Something I will be doing for now on is turning to God when i am discouraged or hurt inside. I need to praise God for his blessings he has provided me with and the friends in Christ that I have to hold me accountable!!

  61. Sarah G.! says:

As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God.
2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

I loved these verses!! A great need is exressed. The Sons of Korah cannot LIVE without God. God is described as their sustainer. These verses convicted me. I need to show my dependence on God through prayer more week, not less. I’m going to start my day out tomorrow in prayer!! :D

  62. Spencer Camp says:

Psalm 42:11 “Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

What a great idea—when I’m not sure what to do or am stumbling over something, why not talk to myself. To tell you the truth I do this quite a bit…I could still do it more though. It’s great! Think about it: if you think situations through before they happen and resolve to follow God, then the next time you are in that situation of unbelief or temptation you more than likely do what is right. Genius! I’ll do it today—start talking to myself, making sure my day is in pursuit of the Lord, and going through temptations beforehand so that I will not sin. The sons of Korah knew their stuff…good or bad they trusted the Lord.

Beach Night@ 5:00 PM tonight! Yes!

  63. kelly causky says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?

When can we go meet God in the air…? Soon! The time is coming and we need to be excited about heaven and eternal life praising the Lord. This earth is not even close to what we have to look forward to in the future. Heaven is near! Maranatha! If we are excited about heaven, then our lives on earth would reflect it.

  64. josh senger says:

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?
