I Am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life
14:1 “Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, that where I am you may be also. 4 And you know the way to where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you had known me, you would have known my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.”
8 Philip said to him, “Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us.” 9 Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10 Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own authority, but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11 Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me, or else believe on account of the works themselves.
12 “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do, because I am going to the Father. 13 Whatever you ask in my name, this I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14 If you ask me anything in my name, I will do it.
Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit
15 “If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Helper, to be with you forever, 17 even the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.
18 “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19 Yet a little while and the world will see me no more, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20 In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you. 21 Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.” 22 Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it that you will manifest yourself to us, and not to the world?” 23 Jesus answered him, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word, and my Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24 Whoever does not love me does not keep my words. And the word that you hear is not mine but the Father’s who sent me.
25 “These things I have spoken to you while I am still with you. 26 But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. 28 You heard me say to you, ‘I am going away, and I will come to you.’ If you loved me, you would have rejoiced, because I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I. 29 And now I have told you before it takes place, so that when it does take place you may believe. 30 I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me, 31 but I do as the Father has commanded me, so that the world may know that I love the Father. Rise, let us go from here. (ESV)

What a rich passage on how to get eternal life, the importance of obedience, and prayer!
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Postmodernism is permeating our society today. It is a belief that there are many ways to God, that Jesus is not the only way. John 14:6 clearly refutes the postmodern ideology as Jesus states from His own mouth that He is THE way and that no one comes to the Father but through HIM. When we share the gospel it is important for us to have verses like John 14:6 memorized in order to combat the postmodern views of today. Anyone who believes that Jesus is one way to God among many and not the only way to God is deceived and needs to be told the Truth of the Bible.
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
I echo Beth’s comments. John 14:6 is a critical verse for us to know when talking with people about God. When asked, “who is Jesus Christ?” , so many people want to say he was a great moral teacher, a profound religous leader, or a good person who had a huge impact on history. While these statements are true, people usually don’t want to say that he is the Son of God who is our one way to salvation. Most people don’t realize what a contradiction this is. However, John 14:6 could not be anymore clear. Either Jesus was lying when he said this (not good morals) or he was lunatic because he believed it was true when it was not (do you learn good morals from crazy people?). The only logical option left is that Jesus was who he said he was, He is Lord and the one way to the Father. The other options just dont’ make sense.
15″If you love me, you will obey what I command.
Jesus says this 4 times in this passage and when someone repeats themselves they want to emphasize on it. We cant just read the Bible that is not enough we have to obey it because we love Jesus.
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
A simple truth that is so easy to understand yet so often misunderstood! There is no way to the Father…to heaven except through the saving work of Christ on the cross. May we make sure we present this truth to everyone we come in contact with and pray that the Lord will unveil the hearts and eyes of the blind!!
1″Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
This reminds me of a topic we discussed last year at small groups. We aren’t suppossed to worry, because we trust that God will take care of our needs. Here Jesus says this to His disciples to reassure them, and it should reassure us too. No matter what, God loves us and will provide what we need. We should not worry, because that is not trusting that God will provide. Whenever we are in need, we shouldn’t worry, but pray and ask God to help us. That’s when He’ll respond by helping us.
I agree with Spencer a huge theme in the passage is Jesus saying if anyone loves Him they must obey His commands. He says it clearly and with authority! Last night I went to the harvest crusades and the message spoken was how to be saved… He did not say one thing about obeying the commandments, rather he said you must accept Jesus into your heart and you have your ticket to heaven. He mislead over 3000+ people which is sad! We need to stand out and say it isn’t about “accepting Jesus” it is about loving Him and obeying what He says throughout His word!!
Spencer is quite true! and even if Jesus says it once we should be obeying His commands.
9Jesus answered: “Don’t you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
to think that they were speaking to God himself this entire time! God is so patient and perfect with the disciples and everyone around Him. From His perspective, to come into a world that is so sinful and is yellling insults, most normal people would think that they are stupid! If you were in His position, you would be like wow your talking to God right now! But since God is so loving and patient He kindly tells them that He is speaking to them right now instead of outbursting. We should be the same. Be kind to those and gently tell others about our Lord and what He’s done for us. :) No outbursts!
This passage is soooo amazing!
2In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you.
What an encouraging and motivating verse! This verse just reassures that we are going to be with God one day and we will have our own place in his house…..I seriously cant wait for that! …..MARANATHAAA (=
15″If you love me, you will obey what I command.
How ironic that Pastor Bobby just spoke about obedience this weekend and that is one of the themes of this passage! Like Pastor Bobby said, If we are one of God’s children, our imediate response should be obedience. We should want to carry his name everywhere we go and spread his word!
1″Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me.
This verse also goes along great with Luke 12:25 “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life ?”. Pastor Bobby talked with us in our small group about worrying and truststing in God. He told us that we worry about things that we cant control (which is completely true if you think about it). He said if we loved God then we should trust in Him. Why sould we worry if we proclaim to be christians and love God?
I agree with Jenae; I was amazed by this passaged! It is deffenitely one of my favorites now!
26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
Jesus always knows what we need better than anyone (Matthew 7:11) that is why He gives us the Holy Spirit! The Holy Spirit is so cool, it is basicly Christ living in us remiding us of His word, and it is also His primary tool in our sanctifaction. It is one of the coolest gifts ever, and should not be taken for granted.
15″If you love me, you will obey what I command.
This verse is just plain and simple. Anyone who truly loves the Lord will obey his commands and do what he has commanded them to do. So basically if you are a Christian, then other people should be able to tell if your a Christian by your actions and how much you love the Lord and obey his commands. And you should be able to tell who isn’t a Christian by their actions. Most people will call themselves Christians, but aren’t obeying His commands. You have to look out for people who obey and disobey the Lord’s commands. The Lord delights in people who obeys His commands.
13And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.
14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Wow, another reminder that prayer is sooo very important in our relationship with Christ!! I not only shows your dependence and reliance on God, but it also shows your trust in Him when you humbly come before him and ask for his help in whatever situation you are in. We cannot forget to have our quiet times with the Lord, as it says in Matthew 6:6 But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. We need to show are love for Christ by spending time in prayer daily! :)
15″If you love me, you will obey what I command.
Reminds me of today’s sermon, how Pastor Bobby said that obedience is expected, and the greatest command is to the Lord (Jesus Christ) with all of our heart, soul, and mind, and if we are going to follow that command then we will obey what He commands.
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Like Beth said, this is an extremely important verse in light of modern day beliefs. The world wants us to believe that “many roads lead to heaven.” However, according to God’s Word, one way leads to the Father, through Jesus Christ. Only by his death and resurrection to we have access to the Father and only by faith in this death do we have eternal life. We need to be praying for those who are trying to get to the Father my some other means.
I remember when Pastor Pete used verses 15-24 in his sermon on wednesday at revival, and Jesus says that if we love him, we will obey his commands. this is so important and true because if we are truly saved, and the holy spirit is in us, then we should want to live for Christ, and be willing to follow him at all costs. works doesnt earn salvation, but works show your salvation. many of the people who claim to be Christians dont act like them, and dont listen to Christ’s commands. it is really really sad because they think they will be saved but in reality they are not, and Christ will reject them on Judgement Day.
26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
I remember from Bobby’s sermon a few weeks ago when He said not to stress out because the Holy Spirit will be working through us when we evangelize and show us what to say. There is so much that He does in our lives that probably goes unnoticed or at least unthanked. Its cool how even though the disciples didn’t understand everything Jesus said at first, the Holy Spirit later showed it to them and helped them remember everything so they could write the NT. So like Bobby said, we don’t have to be afraid about what to say when we evangelize, although we should still be preparing, but trust in the Holy Spirit and thank Him for all the amazing work He is continually doing in us to make us more like Christ.
What a great chapter! Love and obedience are connected according to this passage. It says that if we love the Father, we will obey His commands. That is stressed several times in this chapter… that means it is very important! We can’t be living in sin and completely disobeying the Father and His commands if we love Him. That is what the chapter says flat out. Obedience will come from our love for Him and our love for Him will be shown by our obedience.
…Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me…
I love verse 6!!! It straight up tells us that NO ONE enters heaven without going through Jesus Christ. We need to believe this and like this chapter says, if we believe we will obey. I think this will be a great verse to share with my non-believer friends!
The Compass BBQ was very funnn!!
21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him.”
We are commanded many things and most of the time we dont listen to what God tells us. But we need to step it up. Like Bobby talked about we need to set goals and do something about reaching them. We can’t just sit back and expect us to reach the goal by not doing anything. No, we need to set the goal and reach the goal by dedicating ourselves to win the prize.
Well I would have done verse 6, but its kinda taken care of :P
14You may ask me for anything in my name, and I will do it.
Most people take this verse out of context and think: I can ask the Lord for whatever I want and he will grant it.
No, the Lord is not some magical genie in a lamp that grants wishes. Everything that happens is in His will, and if what we ask for is in it, then sure! read the second part “and I will do it”
We need to remember this when we want things for ourselves that will only benefit us, when we really should be thinking of our brothers and sisters in Christ and what He is going to do for us!
12 I tell you the truth, anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing. He will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father.
13 And I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Son may bring glory to the Father.
These verses bring up 2 important points. First, if you want to be a true Christian, you need to obey Christ and follow His example. Many people today want to be associated with the church without actually living such a life. These people, according to Jesus himself, do not have faith, and therefore we need to do everything we can to bring the message of truth to them. Secondly, if Jesus promises to do great things in our lives, then we need to be asking for Him to do great things. Too often, we as Christians are content to let things continue along the same route they are going. But we need to be radically different, always bold for Christ, taking our lives to the next level, and praying daily for God to use us in amazing ways for His glory.
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
This is so true. These days people, even ”Christians” try to work around that. Jesus is the ONLY way to heaven. Not by any other way. You really cannot have eternal life or even enter the kingdom except through God.
6Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Many people think that you can get to heaven in different ways. But Jesus Christ is the only way to get to heaven. Through him you can get salvation. Many people seem to wait last minute to realize that, but its too late! It would be awesome if everyone repented of their sins and put their faith and trust in Christ so they can be saved!
