John 13

Jesus Washes the Disciples’ Feet

13:1 Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that his hour had come to depart out of this world to the Father, having loved his own who were in the world, he loved them to the end. During supper, when the devil had already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray him, Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into his hands, and that he had come from God and was going back to God, rose from supper. He laid aside his outer garments, and taking a towel, tied it around his waist. Then he poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel that was wrapped around him. He came to Simon Peter, who said to him, “Lord, do you wash my feet?” Jesus answered him, “What I am doing you do not understand now, but afterward you will understand.” Peter said to him, “You shall never wash my feet.” Jesus answered him, “If I do not wash you, you have no share with me.” Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, not my feet only but also my hands and my head!” 10 Jesus said to him, “The one who has bathed does not need to wash, except for his feet, but is completely clean. And you are clean, but not every one of you.” 11 For he knew who was to betray him; that was why he said, “Not all of you are clean.”

12 When he had washed their feet and put on his outer garments and resumed his place, he said to them, “Do you understand what I have done to you? 13 You call me Teacher and Lord, and you are right, for so I am. 14 If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet. 15 For I have given you an example, that you also should do just as I have done to you. 16 Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them. 18 I am not speaking of all of you; I know whom I have chosen. But the Scripture will be fulfilled, ‘He who ate my bread has lifted his heel against me.’ 19 I am telling you this now, before it takes place, that when it does take place you may believe that I am he. 20 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever receives the one I send receives me, and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me.”

One of You Will Betray Me

21 After saying these things, Jesus was troubled in his spirit, and testified, “Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray me.” 22 The disciples looked at one another, uncertain of whom he spoke. 23 One of his disciples, whom Jesus loved, was reclining at table close to Jesus, 24 so Simon Peter motioned to him to ask Jesus of whom he was speaking. 25 So that disciple, leaning back against Jesus, said to him, “Lord, who is it?” 26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I will give this morsel of bread when I have dipped it.” So when he had dipped the morsel, he gave it to Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot. 27 Then after he had taken the morsel, Satan entered into him. Jesus said to him, “What you are going to do, do quickly.” 28 Now no one at the table knew why he said this to him. 29 Some thought that, because Judas had the moneybag, Jesus was telling him, “Buy what we need for the feast,” or that he should give something to the poor. 30 So, after receiving the morsel of bread, he immediately went out. And it was night.

A New Commandment

31 When he had gone out, Jesus said, “Now is the Son of Man glorified, and God is glorified in him. 32 If God is glorified in him, God will also glorify him in himself, and glorify him at once. 33 Little children, yet a little while I am with you. You will seek me, and just as I said to the Jews, so now I also say to you, ‘Where I am going you cannot come.’ 34 A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. 35 By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Jesus Foretells Peter’s Denial

36 Simon Peter said to him, “Lord, where are you going?” Jesus answered him, “Where I am going you cannot follow me now, but you will follow afterward.” 37 Peter said to him, “Lord, why can I not follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.” 38 Jesus answered, “Will you lay down your life for me? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster will not crow till you have denied me three times. (ESV)

  1. Curtis says:

35 By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

this has been one of my favorite verses; one reason is because i can see it being worked out in my life… my friends always look at me weird when i do something nice for them, help them out with school stuff or buy them lunch and its awesome seeing them see Christ through me… but just in general, compared to the way people treat each other, if we aren’t living and treating our brothers and sisters in Christ differently, then we are no different from the non christians.

this verse also reminds me of how the early church was so devoted to each other as described in Acts… going even as far as to selling their possessions to meet each others needs… that is one example that always reminds me to put others wishes above my own.

  2. 1 It was just before the Passover Feast. Jesus knew that the time had come for him to leave this world and go to the Father. Having loved his own who were in the world, he now showed them the full extent of his love.

God the Father displayed His unconditional and perfect love for us by crushing His own Son so that His wrath could be poured out on Him and not saved sinners. What an amazing picture of love that is for us! May we never become numb to God’s perfect love in Christ’s work on the cross and as we reflect on it may that motivate us to live lives pleasing to Him!!!

  3. Beth Lauder says:

14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

Jesus humbly washed His disciples’ feet and set a godly example of service for them to follow. Jesus tells His disciples to follow His example and to serve others. That same command is for us to follow, too. When we serve the body of Christ we are showing selfless love, which Jesus goes on to say in this chapter is the way that men will know that we are His disciples. An importnat question to ask ouselves is: How are we serving others? If we have no answer, or it takes us a while to come up with something, that means we need to be obedient and seek out opportunities to serve others on a regualr basis.

  4. it's Daniel Yo! (from ireland!) says:

34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

This verse gives an example that we can even use at school. Pastor Bobby was talking with us in our small group last year about being different and set apart in school, so that people would notice us and could tell that we are different. This is a great way to show that you are a Christian. If you love one another at school then people will know that you are different an then they might ask you why, and that is a great way to start up a condversation about Christ!
So anyway i think you should try it because last year it worked for me and i got to share to gospel with a few kids.

P.S. i have no clue what time it is there but here it’s about 4 o’clock and it’s chucking down. My cousin’s are saying “it’s lovely weather eh?”

  5. Mike says:

    3 Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;
4 so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist

Jesus knew that His time had come and that He only had a few hours left with His disciples. So one of the last things He does with them is show them an example of service and humility. This was obviously something that was on His mind and that He wanted to impress upon the minds of His disciples, so we should also pay close attention to His example. Jesus showed us what it means to serve other Christians unconditionally, putting yourself below them and being willing to do whatever needs to be done. A fairly easy lesson to see, but when it comes time to put it into practice, many of us shy away from actually volunteering or taking the initiative to get something done. Instead, we need to be actively seeking such opportunities to serve our fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, with a humble and Christ-centered heart that doesn’t care how lowly the job or if anyone notices what you are doing.

With that in mind, guys remember we have the Revival 08 cleanup today!

  6. Dan Lauder says:

17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Here Jesus distinguishes between head knowledge and putting knowledge into action. Unfortunately, there can be a big discrepancy between what people know they should do and what they actually do. God’s blessing or favor comes to our lives when we apply what we know. To know I should follow the example of Jesus and serve and love people means nothing unless I actually serve and love the people in my life.

  7. SpencerCamp says:

14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.
15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

This chapter always reminds me of Jesus’ secret saying “It is better to give than to receive.” If we live our lives as lowly slaves of other people constantly in service to others then we will be blessed.

  8. Max says:

15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

Jesus washes His disciples feet. Normally only a lowly servant would do that. Now He says we are to do the same for others. Jesus set the example that we are supossed to follow. We are servants to others, because Jesus was one first. If we show the kindness that Jesus wants us to show, people will be more open to the gospel. Plus Jesus commanded us to do it, so we need to.

  9. Nachooooooooooooo says:

5After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

Jesus shows how humble he is through washing his disciples feet. The God of the universe willingly making himself a slave for men. We need to be like him and look for ways to serve others as much as possible. We should jump at any opportunity to serve.

  10. Jenaeeee (= says:

5 After that, he poured water into a basin and began to wash his disciples’ feet, drying them with the towel that was wrapped around him.

If i were one of the disciples at the time and had Jesus washing my feet i dont know what i would say becuase it would be such an honor for him to do that. I think that it would be mind blowing that Jesus would actually do that, when we should be the ones washing his feet.

34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

These verses remind me that when we are gossiping or talking bad about our brothers and sisters in christ, its not something that shows we are christians. We should love one another, no matter what the situation. God calls us to also forgive eachother and not hold grudges so if we do that, then there will be no problem with loving eachother.

  11. Morgan Coppola says:

34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.
35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

This verse stuck out to me becasue even though
we get in fights and conflicts we should love everybody
the same.. as God has LOVED us.

  12. Bethany Gonzales says:

38Then Jesus answered, “Will you really lay down your life for me? I tell you the truth, before the rooster crows, you will disown me three times!
major ownage! jesus knows what everyone is going to do before it happens! just like how He explains in verse 3, He knows where He comes from and who His Father is.
He is God and for now none of the disciples completely grasp that concept. Only after His resurrection do they truly understand who God is. And the part where Jesus is talking to the devil through Judas is so creepy! I mean, to know that the devil is in him and still talk to him! I wouldn’t talk to him! :)

  13. Hunter says:

35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

Great comment Curtis! Dude, I was thinking the same thing! Jesus is basicly saying that people will know if you are a Christian if you love people, and I deffenitely want people to see Christ living through me. And so we know exactly what we are supposed to be doing; Paul breaks loves down for us in 1 Corintians 13: 4-7! Love is one of the coolest things ever…

  14. Shane McCuistion says:

34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

These are good verses to know as a Christian. If people at your school don’t see the love you have for them or how much you care about them going to Heaven, they are going to think what kind of Christians are they? That’s why Christians need to show love to everyone including their enemies. If there are people that can see your love they will notice it and they can trust you enough to ask questions about the gospel. This hasn acutally happened to me at my school before and it is a good feeling.

  15. Kyle Johnson says:

37Peter asked, “Lord, why can’t I follow you now? I will lay down my life for you.”

This should be our response everytime, that we will lay our life down for Christ, and our brothers and sisters, we have to give up everything we have, so that we can follow Christ. I remember Pastor Mike talking about this last year at Revival 07′ about giving up things in our lives so that we can follow Christ, it cost everything we have.

  16. Sarah G! says:

18″I am not referring to all of you; I know those I have chosen. But this is to fulfill the scripture: ‘He who shares my bread has lifted up his heel against me.’

Once again, more proof to Jesus’ claims of being the Son of God!! It happened just as it says in Psalm 41:9, many years before Jesus was even born. It is soo comforting knowing that we follow the one and only true God, and knowing that all that what we are reading in the Bible is just evidence to his perfect majesty :). More prophecy is fulfilled in this chapter, and this is a good verse to use when evangelizing to someone who doesn’t believe the Bible is true. Thus, encouraging us to evangelize more as well as praise God for his amazing perfect will!

  17. Michelle:) says:

35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

this is truly convicting.i think its rediculous when we become so self centered and so dependent on what others think of US, that we dont even take time to humble ourselves and become more christ-like.we need to put others before us.we need to recall that in 1 cor. 13 (the love chapter) it says love keeps no record of wrongs;it is NOT self seeking;and LOVE NEVER FAILS.
i know we struggle with keeping a record of wrongs, and i know we talked about forgiveness at one of the beach nights.i think that we need to be in constant prayer for God to make us more humble and sincere.
Gods love for us is so deep and genuine…God is love.and we need to represent Him by showing others that we love them.

    MARANATHA

and nachooo(i dont know who you are) but i totally agree with you.we need to serve others- its a great way to show Christs love:)

  18. kyle pickell says:

35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

What this means to me is that we have to be differnt then other people. We have to standup and say that were Christians.Such a great verse!

  19. christopher eriksen says:

17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

Its funny how when we are selfish and seek only our own gratification, we never really feel satisfied, but when we sacrifice ourselves for others we experience great joy. I can’t wait till heaven where there will be no selfishness, but while we are still here let’s make sure we follow Christ’s command by loving others as He loved us. And when we do so we can take assurance that we really are His disciples.

  20. Ryan Cox says:

    3Jesus knew that the Father had put all things under his power, and that he had come from God and was returning to God;

4so he got up from the meal, took off his outer clothing, and wrapped a towel around his waist.

What an example! We understand through the Gospels that Jesus had certain limits on his divinity, but also certain advantages. Here, God has given Him ALL power–to do ANYTHING, and Jesus CHOOSES to set this example of humble service. The God of the universe is lowering Himself to the level of a servant by washing the disciples’ feet; then He tells us to do the same. It’s convicting enough when God tells us in His Word to do something; it’s even more poignant when He does it first as an example of humility and soon-to-be self-sacrifice. Let’s make sure we’re serving each other at every chance we get!

  21. austin wilemon says:

By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

I really liked what curtis had to say.

  22. MJ says:

15I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.
16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.
17Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.

This is just one of the many times that Jesus has shown us what to do. His entier life is like a road map for us to follow in his foot steps. He wants us to do everything that he tells us to do not just half of it. We need to make sure that we are not disobeying his commands.

  23. Jessica Adams says:

Okay… I gotta be quick… I really loved this chapter. I’ve read this story so many times, and Jesus’ actions are so wonderful! It’s amazing how humble He was. He washed the feet of His disciples. We need to be like Jesus and put others before ourselves and “wash the feet of others”.

  24. Jeremy Burton!!! says:

34″A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

35By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

these verses are really good because they say that we should love one another for jesus loved us, and i struggle with that alot, like if u dont really like some one or something like that. but jesus simply command’s us that we should love everybody!!!
35 was good beacause everybody should be able to tell that we are disiple’s of christ at school and everywhere by are fruits and the ways we are acting. we should easily be noticed as christians at our schools because we shud be evengalizing every single day!!!!!

  25. DB says:

16I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him.

I liked this verse because it is saying that we are not to look at people as slaves and masters, but saved and unsaved like the Bible points out!
