Psalm 119:113-120
Samekh
113 I hate the double-minded,
but I love your law.
114 You are my hiding place and my shield;
I hope in your word.
115 Depart from me, you evildoers,
that I may keep the commandments of my God.
116 Uphold me according to your promise, that I may live,
and let me not be put to shame in my hope!
117 Hold me up, that I may be safe
and have regard for your statutes continually!
118 You spurn all who go astray from your statutes,
for their cunning is in vain.
119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross,
therefore I love your testimonies.
120 My flesh trembles for fear of you,
and I am afraid of your judgments. (ESV)

Ps 119:118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain.
John 19:30 says Jesus paid for our sins completely – rejecting His own Son for our sins. Thank You LORD for that gift of love. Now, who do You want me to tell about this today? Please place me in the path of all those who You want me to share and give me the words of freedom to share with them today!
116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.
117 Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees
These two verses prove that we can’t live by ourselves. The Lord sustains us and gives us life. He upholds us and delivers us from evil. We don’t deserve any of this as sinners. We will never be able to pay Him back for all He has done for us and He still loves us. Talk about forgiveness and LOVE.
PRAYER REQUEST:
My grandpa isn’t doing so good. Please pray for him to get better if it’s the Lord’s will and if not, pray for strength for my family.
May the Lord always recieve the Glory.
118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain.
This verse makes it very clear that those who do not obey God’s Word will be rejected by God. Isn’t that exactly the opposite of what the world teaches us about God? The world says that God is loving and will gladly accept into heaven all of us who are “good” and try our best to live a decent life. This verse tells us that ALL who stray from God’s decrees will be rejected by God. I am reminded of 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9, “He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. They will be punished with everlasting destruction and shut out from the presence of the Lord and the majesty of His power.” Once we repent of our sins and place our trust in Christ we must truly live a life of obedience to God’s Word or we are deceived about our salvation and will be headed to hell. It is my prayer that every day I would seek God and obey His commands!
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
WOW this encourages me so much to know that He is always there for me and He is my rock/shield and my salvation. Now I just gotta put more hope, than the lacking amount I have, in His word.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws
As much as we have heard throughout Scripture “fear God” I don’t think we really understand what it means or even exhibit that fear on a daily basis. We need to make sure that although we saved sinners will never experience the wrath of God, He is still God and holy and perfect and blameless and everytime we sin we sin against that holiness and perfection, we say in our hearts/minds “I know better God”…According to Proverbs 2:1-5, “the fear of the Lord” is found through heartfelt prayer and diligent seeking His Word (commands and all). Do we fear God? Do we stand in awe of who He is and all He has done and is yet to do??
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
Nahum 1:7 “The LORD is good, a refuge in times of trouble. He cares for those who trust in him.” God is our hiding place and our strength. He is our protector! This verse is a perfect reminder that God is a stronghold to those who put their hope in Him. It’s such a comforting thing to know that He will take care of his children no matter what happens. Whatever we go through, we know that the Lord is with us and we can have faith that his hand is at work through every hardship.
113 I hate double-minded men, but I love your law.
God’s law is clear, concise and straight-forward. I find it dificult to witness to double minded people because they profess to beleive one thing, but thier lives and their actions prove otherwise. It is almost better when someone speaks a differing opinion because and has diametrically oppsed views! At least there is a staring point from which you can discuss God’s word. A productive conversaation can take place. But when someone knows the “right things to say” – they are fooling themselves because ultimately, it is impossible to fool God. Like I said, God’s law is clear and concise. If we were capable of following it to the letter, we would be safe and protected. “119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes.”
It is impossibe to be perfect and that is why Christ came. He lived the pefect life that was impossible for me. I have put my trust in Him, and because He received MY punishment on the cross, I am acceptable to God.
John 12:47b “For I did not come to judge the world, but to save it.”
My prayer is that I will never be double-minded or lukewarm in my faith.
*Chelsea, I’ll be praying for God’s will in your Grandpa’s life. And for your family as well… <3
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
Bad company corrupts good character! As Christians, it’s part of our lifestyle to avoid being with people who are corrupt. If we hang out with them, we separate ourselves from God because we are sinning. Just like the Psalmist, we need to cry out to God the same thing! That we will avoid bad company so that we can continue living out Christ’s commands!
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
Back then people would fight gnarly battles with swords and shields (think Brave Heart). People fighting in hand to hand combat in bloody battles is something most of us want to be protected from. Admist this context, the psalmist says that God is his refuge, not the armor, or the castle, horse, army etc. He has put his hope in the Word and finds his safety and protection in God alone.
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
I want to reiterate Alex’s comment. We need to make sure that we stay away from bad company. It is hard enough to fight our own flesh. We just make it all the ahrder to keep God’s commands when we surround ourselves with bad company!
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
We always can put our hope in the Lord. If we do this, as well as trust him completely, he will never disappoint. If you’ve ever put your hope in men then you know how easily it is to get disappointed. But men will come and go in your life and ultimately this period of our life, these people surrounding us, they’re temporary. God is forever and he never changes and we can rest assured that hoping in him is not a waste nor will it disappoint us. He is our refuge, we can go to him in times of despair and he will protect us in all circumstances. Put your hope in God and in His words written in the Bible!
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
Amen to that!!! We all, as sinners, will be tempted. But we can refuse and keep on the right path with God. We just need to follow his commands and not slowly inch towards that edge. Let all stay again from that edge so we wont drop. With God on our side, we know this isn’t impossible
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
Our God is almighty and has no weakness. If you don’t fear Him, then you don’t truely know Him. Many churches teach only of God’s love and do not stress the fact that He is also just and will punish those who do not fear Him or those who bring harm to His children. You need to find yourself subjected to Him and make sure to do what He says or you will be punished.
116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.
I loved this verse!!!!!!! It really shows our dependence on God! He created us and gives us breath each day! God knows exactly what’s going to happen in our lives, the good and the bad, and he is in control! It makes me want to praise the Lord for his power and glorious attributes!!
119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes
Well, I didn’t really understand the meaning of “dross” so I looked it up in a dictionary and the definition was “waste matter; refuse” And that helped a lot. Like it says in this verse, God will just simply “discard” or throw away the wicked, who choose to not follow God. And since they are “dross”, they are just waste to Him. So, in order not to be waste to God, we need to follow, and love Him intensely for eternity!
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
I LOVE PSALM 19 it has so much depth and meaning to it and I also love this verse for God is our shield and refuge and through all of it, good and bad, i put my hope in Him and His word! Jesus is my strength and Savior and can help me through it all! My life verse is Philippians 4:13:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
And we really can do it all with Him! :]
***Put your hope in the LORD!!!***
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
Very powerful verses!! God is our refuge and our shield from evil. Only when we put our hope in Gods word can we be protected from sinful worldly things. After we turn to God for help we need turn away from all evildoers so that we may keep our commands to God. Like we learned at Winter Revival, “Bad company corrupts good character.” We need to surround ourselves with Godly, Christ loving people in our lives. It’s not going to be easy, but as PaYtOn:] said
Philippians 4:13:
“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
And we really can do it all with Him!
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
We need to stand in fear of the Lord. We fear so many things that are so unimportant yet so many do not show fear of the Lord yet he is the person who is in control of our eternal soul. This verse just reminds me to tremble in fear of the Lord as it says.
116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.
In this verse how it says, “do not let my hopes be dashed” reminded me of the action pics: athlete sermon. Like how we need to run through life and finish this race with Christ. To not give up and disqualify ourselves from the race and our prize but stay strong until the end to recieve our prize of eternal life rejoicing with our Savior forever. Maranatha!!!
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
We need to be careful at who we choose as our friends. Non-Christians can bring you down and lead you astray! As Alex said, bad company corrupts good character. We need to surround ourselves with other Christians and who will build us up and encourage you! We dont necessarily dump Non-Christian friends, but we shouldnt be super close with them either. As Christians, we need to reach out to them and share the Gospel!
113 I hate double-minded men, but I love your law.
There is no such thing as a luke-warm Christian. You are either completely in or out. You either obey Gods commands 24/7 or you don’t. When you decide that you want to be a Christian, then you can love the law!
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
Do we fill our lives with friends that hate or at least do not acknowledge the living GOD? He is our refuge, he is our shelter, he is our salvation, so we should fill our lives with people that love him as much as we do. Often we are thrown together with people that are not GOD-fearing, and we have no choice but to associate with them, but we can still live godly lives around them and witness to them. The friends of our choosing, however, should be handpicked because of their faithfulness. We choose friends off of interest, and if GOD and CHRIST are truly the focal point of our lives, would that be a truly difficult interest to overlook?
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
Wow..thats pretty intense if you really think about it! God is the most powerful thing we could ever imagine…times infinity!!
When I think about how often i fear what others will think if i go all out on evangelizing and what others will think of me in any other situation, i come across to one conclusion, and one conclusion only- THAT IS REDICULOUS!
Our fear of God should make our flesh tremble, He is so powerful!I dont even think we could even comprehend all of the things He can do- we make Him ‘smaller’ than He really is.
Like Bobby said in one of his previous sermons, we should be fully fearing the Lord- we should fear Him so much that if we sin, we should totally fear what God could do in that situtation. We should fear the disobedience towards His laws/statutes/commands towards us. We should fear the outcome of not following up on reading the Word of God. We should fear a life without God-which i know we do…but a life without God is worthless.God is the top of the todem pole and He is extremely powerful! I know I am definatley going to take time to focus on the power of God and the satisfaction I get from reading and obeying His very commands towards us
Maranatha; Come Lord, come
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
This reminds me of the God Calls it Love sermons where we learned that instead of wondering how close we can get to sin without sinning, we need to run away from sin at full speed. This verse shows the right attitude that we should follow!
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
Wow Beth, I typed out my whole response and it was pretty much identical to yours. Soooooo ya, God Calls it Love, the “line”, and the like, Got it Memorized?
118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain.
This Verse hits me close to home, because i can name two friends that have strayed from god that need to repent of their sins and except god back into their lives and the sacrafic that he gave his only son to wipe away all of our sins.
I have prayed for many weeks for my friends and will continue to until they come to true north with me, which is why i dont want to post their names. i just ask that god will help give me the words to bring them to him because as close as i am to getting them to come as we talk more and more about my faith, i now just getting them to come once wont be enough.
Chelsea, i will keep your grandpa in my prayers
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
When I think of this, I have this picture inside my head. I think the psalmist is talking about God protecting him. Protecting him from temptation.
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
Ohh verse of my life! I love this verse! Away from me all you that reject and rebel against God. So that you will not corrupt me into sinning. I know when I am around you that I will be more easily to sin. I don’t care about my relationship with you because God is my most important relationship with. God is the one who I love the most! When I am around non-Christians I sin more. It’s even sad, sometimes when I am around them they cuss and it gets into my brain and when something bad happens sometimes it will make me cuss and want to use that word. It just comes natural and i don’t even notice when I say it, i realize afterwards.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
how humbling and i want to have this fear, where i will tremble…I want and am jealous over the psalmist heart for God! cause i want a heart like the psalmist.
118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain.
Oh goodness. That would be awful to be rejected by the Lord of the universe. What a bummer. It is the worst thing that could ever happen to you. Let’s be careful to never stray from God’s commands.
116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed.
I was praying last night about how I really wanted God to make me feel better after numerous events that have happened in my life recently and this verse just did it for me. People can’t keep their promises as well as God- obviously. It is such a wonderful feeling and thought that God will NEVER let us down. We can put our full hope in him and know for a fact that everything will be fine if we just trust and believe in him. I feel so much better just reading this (:.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
I want a trembling like this for God’s word! What an amazing timing for this verse to help me remember what it means to fear God, a fear that causes trembling as well as obediance. How awesome!
117 Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees.
yesssssss I pray God upholds us at True North. I pray for Us that we keep regard while learning to be hardcore with a softshell.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
That a great verse about having a fear of the Lord. Our fear of the Lord needs to be such that is causes us to turn from our evil ways of sin and go to obeying God. This would result in us standing in awe like the verse says of the laws of the Lord and actually making an effort to be obedient to Him. Just imagine your fear when you don’t obey your mom and you get a consequence and then multiply that by about a gazillion to imagine fear from not obeying the mighty God that created you!
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
God is my shield from anything and everything bad that wants to harm me. He keeps Satin away from me and protects me. I shall stay on his path use Him as a light and He will protect me.
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
This verse just reminds me that I have God on my side and He can protect me. We need to also fear God and obey to Him.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
I love this verse becuase it proves to us that fearing God is not a “reverence” for Him, but an actual fear of His power, judgement and holiness. This encourages me to fear God more so that I will obey His commands.
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
Wow, this is true zeal for the Lord. He has put keeping the commands of God high above his friends around him. As I think about it, this zealous attitude of God before friends is scarcely found on our high school campuses. Rather, several people look over the sins of their friends (or possibly even join in) just because they want to feel accepted and fit in. I think we all struggle with this! The true godly reaction would be to expel the evil one (a person who consistently tempts you to sin) from among you (or better yet leave your wicked friends), declaring “As for me, I will serve the Lord!”
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God
This is the type of attitude we need when dealing with sin. “Away from me, you evil doers…” When a certain temptation comes up, we are no to welcome it. Like Pastor Bobby said in that one sermon: “Don’t see how close you can get to sin. See how far you can flee away from it.” We need to reject any form of sin that comes our way as soon as it shows up. We need to keep the commandments of God, and sin will only draw us away from Him.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
All of us should be experiencing this constantly. When you do not fear the Lord, it is as if you are not respecting Him. That is not a good idea. We should be thankful that God has given us these guidelines, and upon judgment, cannot claim that we did not know.
I’m amazed to see how many Christians, whether they are high schoolers or grown adults, involve themselves with “evil doers”. I understand that we all do things that God detests but let’s talk about the way that many of us set ourselves up for it. A couple of years ago at one of the Men’s retreats, I was talking to a guy who earlier that day let an inappropriate word come out. He confessed to me that he had been spending a lot of time with the people at the office, none of them Christians! I talk to a lot of you high schoolers and I hear the same kind of stuff. We are to be in the world but not of the world. We are not be conformed to the patterns of this world but are to be transformed by the renewing of our minds daily. We are to make sure that everything we do, it is for the Lord. I believe that hanging out with non-Christians with no purpose to “make the most of every opportunity” is sin. We need to do just as the psalmist does here and plead with God to help us to be strong in moving away from these people in order that we can focus on the commands of God. Remember, one command that we get later on and, in fact, Jesus’ last words here on earth is to “Go out and make disciples”! So we do need to inner-act with evil doers only to try to be used by God and make disciples out of them.
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
113 I hate double-minded men, but I love your law.
In this verse, the double-minded men are (my opinion) hypocrites. They say/do one thing and then go around and do the opposite and God commands to not be like the hypocrites. We should always be following God’s law because like in this verse, we should love his law.
120.) My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
That’s a great point Hunter, totally tracking with you on this one…
I was thinking the same thing!
Verse 120…..
If anyone says Christians should not fear the Lord just look at this verse…also look and stories in the Bible like Jesus calming the storm or when he told the deciples to throw their nets on the other side of the boat and all the fish jumped in…. in the stories Jesus’ 12 closest deciples see his power, his holiness and begin to tremble with fear as well. We as christians need to fear God and his power and how much he hates evil, but at the same time we love him and follow him….
I’m with Hunter and Brett…the Calvary boys!
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you… that does not sound like reverence. And the psalmist is coming from a perspective of someone who loves God and his Word as he has expressed so many times. Still this deep sense of dread also factors into how he thinks of God.
I am also with the Father of True North…Ryan Damato. We really need to stay away from the bad company of non-Christians unless we are evangelizing them…
113 I hate double-minded men
115 Away from me, you evildoers,
118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain.
119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross;
Out of the 8 lines in this section, 4 of them contain this thought. That’s half! Couldn’t be more clear that since the wicked are deceitful and double-minded with God…then we are not with them.
But to all of you here on SOTD who are reading God’s Word and doing what it says…
I am with you!
Double It Up Worship Night on Saturday! Woohoo!
i completely agree with tyler on this one… loving gods law should be the polar opposite of hypocrisy.
113 I hate double-minded men, but I love your law.
People often change their minds and remain unfaithful, but God’s law never changes. So we can take confidence in the fact that God will always be faithful to us, and that we can always know we are serving Him if we follow His commands!
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
I with you all…my mind immediately went to 1 Corinithians 15:33. As Christians, we need to steer clear of bad company so we will not be led astray by there actions. If our relationship with Christ is supreme in our life, we should be able to stay away from these wicked people. Our delight should be in God’s Word (Psalm 1:1-3) and we will continue living our lives in faithful obedience!
114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word.
Putting your hope in the word is a hard core thing. To put your hope in God’s word means to bet your life on it. We need to not just say that we trust Scripture, but prove it with our lifestyles.
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
If the Psalmist is trembling before God, then I’m pretty sure he wants to please Him. And what does God ask of us?- obeying His commands. The Psalmist makes sure to do this by removing all distracting influences, evildoers in particular. When I at first think about the people I see at school everyday, my first thought is not always evildoer. That at first seems harsh. But really, we need to be thinking this so that we are reminded of the urgent need to evangelize them and that we need to be careful that we are not being influenced for the worse by them.
118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain.
119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes.
120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.
This section of verses reminded me of John 15 where Jesus says, “If you love me, you will obey what I command.” The consequence of disobeying God’s commands is being rejected and discarded by God. This is so scary. I want to tremble before him too, and let that motivate me to love living according to his Word!
Psalm 119:113-120
113 I hate double-minded men, but I love your law.
115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God!
The Psalmist here reminds us about how important our friends are. If we are being obedient to God than we will by default be turned off by people who say one thing and do the opposite. Even our Christian friends can be double-minded. We should not hang out with friends who say they believe in God but their actions prove a different story. Bad company corrupts! Lets be careful not get swept away from the Truth by hanging with people who want to bring you down either intentionally or unintentionally. Satan the great deceiver can use others to draw a believer down and back into sin.
Rev 3:15-16 15 I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16 So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.
