Psalm 119:105-112

Nun

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet
and a light to my path.
106 I have sworn an oath and confirmed it,
to keep your righteous rules.
107 I am severely afflicted;
give me life, O Lord, according to your word!
108 Accept my freewill offerings of praise, O Lord,
and teach me your rules.
109 I hold my life in my hand continually,
but I do not forget your law.
110 The wicked have laid a snare for me,
but I do not stray from your precepts.
111 Your testimonies are my heritage forever,
for they are the joy of my heart.
112 I incline my heart to perform your statutes
forever, to the end. (ESV)

  1. DB says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

This is one of my favorite verses! I like how it shows that the Word of the Lord lights our ways in this dark land. We need to always be letting the Lord lead us, and also be willing to follow His commands everyday!!!

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

Can we all really say that about ourselves? Do we really want to be following the Lord’s law day and night for our whole lives!? That is how we should be living all of the time, 24/7! Lets all grow together and make sure that this happens at True North and everywhere else!

  2. Old man new heart, grateful for a faithful Lord says:

    PS 119: 105-112

I get the feeling that life on this world is a tightrope with disaster on every side and God’s word is the only way to stay alive. And it is… Even though there are traps all over Your word is the light for my way. And that gives me joy!

  3. Max says:

107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your word.

When life gets hard and tough, God is there for us. He will preserve our lives, “according to His word.” God will not abandon us or leave us, He will always be right beside us helping us along the way. We can take comfort in the fact that God will be with us and preserve our lives.

  4. Zach V. says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path

This verse tells us the meaning to life; following God’s word. The Bible has everything we need for life. It shows us our sin and tells us the path for Christ to bear it for us. God’s word shows us the path we need to follow. Now we just need to follow it.

  5. Ben Blakey says:

The first and last verse of this section frame this passage really well.

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

This is a wonderful verse. We live in a dark world, and our eyes are pretty dim. But the good news is that we have a lamp and a light! I think this verse is especially cool for young people; as we grow up and begin to make big life decision, we can be guided by God’s Word.

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

Verse 105 means nothing without this verse. The light of God’s Word will not benefit us unless we set our hearts on following it to the very end!

  6. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

I love this verse! It is such a clear picture of what Scripture actually does…it is the light for the narrow path in this dark dark world. As we seek Him and His revealed will in His Word He will guide our steps. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

  7. Jacob Antoun says:

107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your word.

The reoccurring theme throughout this psalm seems to be God’s word and how we should meditate on it, study it, use it to guide, and make sure it is a priority in our lives. Verse 7 states that our lives are literally preserved by God’s word. There have been so many times in my life that I feel really down or sad, and when I read God’s word during those times, it has a special significance. It lifts me up, it encourages me, it brings me a smile during hard and sad times because of all the promises that God makes and the hope that we have through them! God’s word preserves our lives, so when the going gets tough, lets dive into the word!

  8. Beth Lauder says:

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

This is the level of commitment we need to have toward obeying God’s law. We must be willing to read the Bible daily and do what it says from the first day we become a Christian until the last day of our lives. So may “Christians” think that if they just believe in Jesus they are saved, but it is crucial that we stand firm in our resolve to obey God to show that we are truly disciples of Christ. It is not easy to obey God all the time, but it is important that we persevere in our obedience all the days of our lives!

  9. Good chapter…yet again!

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

Oh how I love this verse! One of the best verses in the Bible in my opinion. Just take a time to be meditating on it…God’s Word is a lamp to my feet, my feet will not stumble in sin if I have the Word of the Lord in my mind. God’s Word will protect me what I do and it will be my path to lead me where Christ will call me heavenward to be with Him for eternity!

  10. Mechell says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

I have always enjoyed this verse. God’s word illuminates our course and is able to keep us on the narrow road, if we respond to it correctly. Psalm 19:8 and Proverbs 6:23 also come to mind when I consider this verse. So often, we look to people when in need of guidance and direction but God is the ultimate authority and has given us everything we need to navigate through this world. I am so thankful to have God’s word; I pray that we would continue to seek Him and allow His word to direct our daily lives.

  11. Alex Mishreki says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

As Christians, this has got to be one of the most comforting things to rest upon! God’s Word will always lead us, especially when we’re going through “the dark”. We can have assurance that we will not stumble through the tough times, but be lead through them by His Word! He will lead us according to His perfect timing and plan. And we can rest assured in that!

  12. Dan Lauder says:

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

I pray this would be true for myself and all of True North. We can live our lives for a lot of reasons. However, it basically boils down to living our life to please ourself, others, or God. The Christian life should aim to please God. I pray that we act the way we do, today and every other day, to please God as a response to what he has done for us through Jesus Christ. The thing we love the most (what our hearts are set on) and spend the majority of our time investing in, is our God. Lets make God our God and bank on the blessing that will follow!

  13. It's Amy Burke Yo! says:

You Stonebrooke alumni will remember this: ready? begin… “I pledge alligance to the Bible, God’s Holy Word. I will make it a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. I will hideit’s words in my heart, that I mightnot sin against God.” I’ll bet those words have a whole new meaning to you now, dont they? :)

08 Accept, O LORD, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws.

My prayer is for God to always allow mw to have a teachable spirit and a mouth overflowing with praise for HIM….

  14. John Karlsson says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path

IT reminds me of one of my favorite songs of all time “Thy Word” by Amy Grant. Say what you want about Amy Grant, this song is great! If you truly believe that God’s word is a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path then this statement is true as well. Not reading God’s word could extinguishes the lamp to my feet and bring darkness to my path. Is your path lighted or is it dark from lack of reading?

  15. Meisha Preston says:

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

As a Christian I will endure to the very end. Philippians 1:6 promises that God will carry on the good work He started in me until completion. Part of enduring to the end is having my heart set on keeping God’s decrees to the end. This is part of putting God absolutely first in my life and having no other God’s before him.

  16. Chelseaaaa says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path

I absolutely love this verse. I memorized the song in Sunday School and still sing it in my head every so often. I love the picture it paints. In this dark and sinful world, God provides a light to guide us “home”. He doesnt expect us to do it all by ourselves because He knows we cant. Praise be to you oh Lord. Praise be to You. I love You with all of my heart, mind, soul, and strength.

  17. Riley Hancock says:

108 Accept, O LORD, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws.

this is a good verse. God help me teach me your laws i praise you through any thing.

  18. Sarah G.! says:

109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law.

This verse was a little convicting!! I know that i sometimes think that i can handle any situation I’m in.. but that is very foolish thinking!! In every situation, we should be relying on the Lord for guidance and remembering his commands!! Reminds me of Psalm 3:5! “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;” :D

  19. Jasmine Douglas says:

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

I love this verse. We need to have that attitude of serving God until the very end. He needs to be our top priority in everything that we do, and we have to make sure we please HIM before we please others. I want to live my life for God 24/7. I am so excited to see what he has in store for all of us in the near future!

  20. ~ Elizabeth R. ~ says:

111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.

Love this verse. It is very encouraging. As Christians, God should always be a part of us. He should be the overruling power in our lives. And because God is our controller, He is a great and joyful part of us. As His followers, God should add to the joy to our hearts by praising Him, and trusting Him!

  21. Trembling From Fear of The Lord, B says:

Jacob Antoun that was very encouraging for me, thank you for your comment. Thank you for everyone’s comments actually! hahaha Mr. Karlsson…so anyways!

His Word preserves our lives and is a light unto our paths. God gives us a working brian to help us comprehend His decrees. He and His Word keeps us from the wicked and His statutes keep us strong….VERY ENCOURAGING! Lord You truly are amazing! :)
This reminded me of that song Carrie Underwood sang that is overplayed:Jesus Take the Wheel. Even though it’s overplayed, it does have a GREAT reminder that God needs to be in control of our lives in every situation. God let me be obedient and have a servant’s heart 24/7 and let my focus be on You and You only. :)

  22. Jacob Foreman says:

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

This is such a great verse to end and sum up the collection of verses under Nun. The Bible is what we have to guide us through a world of sin and give us the hope of salvation from our faith. The Bible is only useful if we actually take advantage of it, keep it close to our heart, and meditate on it. Thus verse 112 shows us that our heart needs to be focused on obeying these decrees throughout our life. We must be in the Bible and then apply it to our lives to have the light really guide us.

  23. Mike says:

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

Just to echo the awesome comments already, we need to have our hearts set on keeping God’s decrees before we are even faced with a situation that would tempt us to do otherwise! When we are faced with sinful situations. it can be easy to falter in our commitment to Christ if our hearts have not been prepared through prayer and reading the Word. But when we rely on God’s help and determine to live a righteous life, we will experience victory over sin as we daily become more like Christ!

  24. 112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.
in this verse i like how it is saying we should keep into gods
    word and obey

  25. Ashlynnn says:

O my goodness, i wish i was this talented at writing!!

109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law.

I read this verse and immeaditaly i thought hey i do this!! Sometimes things get hard and i forget i can do all things through Christ and i try to take it on all by myself…it never works and i have to remind myself that i need Christ. By having his word close to my heart i am more prepared for what lies ahead

  26. Christy Beymer says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

God is a light to our path. He guides us each day and has a plan for all who believe in him. We just need to put our faith and trust in him and never have doubts. He never will leave us. I find that soo amazing and encouraging :)

  27. Spencer Camp says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

I have to agree with just about everyone. This verse, in it’s descriptive imagery, shows truly what God’s word is to us. It is a light, guiding our path as we travel through the darkness.
Especially at our schools, darkness lurks around every corner and hovers over the ground like a thick fog. We wade through the darkness of the world, proclaiming a radiant (light) truth that is God’s word.

This verse is truly amazing. If we are in God’s word daily then our walk will not be aimless like the worlds’, but will be escorted by a purpose that is to the sole glory of God.

God’s word answers the many questions we have about are walk with him, therefore we should praise him daily!

  28. Murphy Danahy says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.

Aw, how I long to follow GOD’s word without interference by ungodly flesh. It is like a prison, for all of us, making us focus on its evil desires instead of GOD’s glorious will. Perhaps that is why GOD so treasures the things that we do for him, every act of obedience is us fighting against the odds. Usually we would commit evil acts without thought, but with the holy spirit we are able to resist temptation, praise the LORD.

  29. Jenae Naeeee (= says:

108 Accept, O LORD, the willing praise of my mouth, and teach me your laws.

God accepts US, we dont accept HIM. we are undeserving of his love and its such a blessing that we need to show him how much we appreciate it and devote our lives to him!

  30. jeffrey Modugno says:

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.
I love this verse. It just shows me that I need to be thinking about finishing the race and not stray from the path. There will be many temptations I just need to set my heart on keeping God’s decrees. Sin starts in the heart so lets focus on the finish line and not let sin in our hearts

  31. Beth Williams says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

This reminds me of that song “Give me oil in my lamp I’ll be burning, burning, burning. Give me oil in my lamp I pray…” If we are living right with God, He will guide us to make decisions that are God glorifying and that also satisfy the desires of our hearts! Psalm 37:4 “Delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart.”

  32. ELLA says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

I love this verse, it reminds me that whenever there is darkness in my life I NEED to go to the Bible and to Him for guidence.

  33. Brett says:

Yeah they really do Mrs. Burke, thanks I forgot all about that.

I love the attitude of this psalmist, we should all strive to put God’s commands first and follow this great example!!

  34. hunter says:

    Great comment Jeff!

111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.
112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

This encourages me to find joy in God rather than in the world. God blesses us when we obey His word, and that is better than anything the world has to offer us. Like Jeff said, if we are serrious about fighting sin and winning the race than we need to let obedience to God be the focus of our heart and not pleasing our sinfull nature. When we let God take control of our hearts and minds and have faith that He will take care of us we will begin to find true satisfaction in Him.

  35. Laura Johnson says:

110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts.

Everyday we are tempted by tons of sin. But we have to not get caught up in all that the world wants us to be, but be what God wants us to be. I love how the psalmist is saying that the wicked set traps for us all the time to sin but lets always remind ourselves of God’s laws and not stray from them.

  36. Kaitlyn says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

I have always loved this verse! It just gives us such a great picture! We are in this world full of darkness yet God’s Word lights our way! This also makes me think of the song out of the darkness by tim hughes.

  37. Haley Litz says:

    Those words do Mrs. Burke!!

112 My heart is set on keeping your decrees to the very end.

What a great verse! I want to have the heart set of this psalmist. Just like Jeff said, we need to be focused on the finish line and running the race 100%. By setting our hearts on the word of God and bringing all glory to Him, we can finish the race. That is where our hearts should be and where I want mine to be and like Jeff said, again, sin starts in the heart, so we need to focus our hearts on God’s decrees.

  38. Cristina Brower CST :) says:

111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.

a lot of the times when we are upset or sad we turn to worldly things to make us happy, like music, shopping, or food. and did you notice that when you turn to worldly things the “happiness” is only temporary, and then it fades quickly? When we turn to God’s Word, we experience true joy! God’s Word is such an amazing gift thats will last forever! We need to remember to always turn to God’s Word for true joy and treasure it!

  39. 107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your word.

Many people mistake the Christian walk and think that they can take on sin by themselves. God is the only one that can help us! Without Him and His love, we wouldn’t stand a chance against sin.

  40. Austin from his iPod says:

    Verse 1

I’m really diggin’ Psalm 119. A light to our feet, a good description. He is the way the truth and the light. He’s the only way we can know where we are going.

  41. 105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

This verse shows what we need to follow and seek after. God’s word guides us and has everything we need in order to stay connected with Christ. I really liked what Ben said about us living in a dark world… just thinking how the Bible is a lamp and our light!

  42. T moore says:

106 I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.

This is a great example of how we should be living our lives for Christ, by making sure we are always following His righteous laws. And this verse carries out really well into verse 110:
110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts.

109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law.

This goes great with what Dan Lauder talked about this weekend, about how we need to admit that our spiritual pockets are empty and we basically need to led God takeover our lives. As it says in this verse, we do constantly take our lives into our own hands and try to fix everything but we just can’t do without Christ.

  43. Jordan Anderson says:

These eight verses are amazing! This should be our prayer everyday that we will keep God’s word in our hearts, and finish the race strong!!

110 The wicked have set a snare for me, but I have not strayed from your precepts.

This verse is so encouraging. David is hit with the storms of life, and still he has not strayed with the right path. I pray for this each and every day, that i will be filled with the Holy Spirit, and live for him, on the path of righteousness. The world will throw some crazy things at you, but learning to just let them roll off your back and keep pressing forward is an amazing skill to have (:
I am so thankful for each and every one of you, and for this church! You all help keep me on the right path, and i am so blessed.

    (:

  44. Alison says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

When you think about it, we are surrounded by darkness. The thing that lights our way is the Bible. It tells us what’s right, what’s wrong, what to do, what not to do. Without the word of God, we’d probably be pretty lost in all the darkness! This just reminded me to thank God for His Word tonight, cuz we would be really messed up without it.

  45. Kelly Causky says:

109 though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law.

It is stupid of us to think that we can take care of our lives by ourselves by living in a way we think is worthy or good enough. God should be our standard and his word should be what we live by. We cannot take the worldly perspective and compare ourselves to each other either. Compare ourselves to God and then we will see how unworthy we are.

  46. Bobby Blakey says:

107 I have suffered much; preserve my life, O LORD, according to your word.

Here is another one of the revival verses. Remember anytime the NIV translates it “preserve my life” the NASB says it “Revive me.” The psalmist has been having a rough go of it. He has suffered much. Yet he knows that the thing that will get him going again is God’s Word. Do we understand that revival only comes from the Bible?

I am so excited about Revival 09. Do you know that this is the last weekend to sign up and get the $375 price? I am mostly excited about Pastor Mike preaching at Revival 09 and the work that God is going to do in the students lives. I am praying that God will use His Word to revive us. Please join me in praying that God will revive us from the Word. And may revival start with us each day as we get into God’s Word on our own!

  47. 111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.

God’s statutes or commands are his inheritance–what he is looking forward to and has already, something that will NEVER pass away! Jesus says in Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.” Everything else is temporary, even the seemingly important things in this this world, only God’s Word will out last heaven and earth.

At the March Girl’s Workshop we talked about this verse and how we find happiness in what we value but our happiness only lasts as long as what we value lasts. That is why God’s commands are the joy of the psalmists heart because they are forever! I am so thankful for this reminder today, that in loving and living God’s commands I can have joy that is real and will never go away. I don’t want to exchange that for any cheap substitutes!

  48. Katie says:

111 Your statutes are my heritage forever; they are the joy of my heart.

It’s so encouraging to know that God’s commands are my inheritance! Although the things of this world are fleeting and come to an end, God’s Word will not fade away. The joy in my heart comes from knowing God and His Word- not from the tempory trappings of this world. I praise the Lord that I can live today with this joy no matter the circumstances because our joy is based on the eternal Word and not on fleeting circumstances.

  49. Brad says:

We often hear people talking about personal values, even companies promote their “values” today. The idea is that one person has one set of values and another person has their own set and it is okay if they value different things. The Bible on the other hand never talks about personal subjective values, it always presents God’s absolute truth and uses words like commands, statutes, decrees, precepts. The moral commandments of the Bible are things that apply to everyone because God is the Creator of the universe, he sets the rules. Unfortunately, people write of God’s commands and instead pick and choose personal values a la carte to accomodate their sin. If we get anything from reading this chapter let’s remember that God’s word is the absolute source of authority in our lives.

  50. Princess Di says:

109 Though I constantly take my life in my hands, I will not forget your law.

We need to remember to leave our life in God’s hands. So much we forget that even though we feel in control, we never are – God always is! Sometimes we feel like we don’t have control in a situation and come crying to God for help in our desperation. But we really need to recognize that we are NEVER in control and should ALWAYS go to God even when we don’t necessarily feel like it’s something we can’t handle. In truth, we can’t handle life on our own, period. We need God.

  51. Rebekah Foreman says:

105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.

I LOVE THIS VERSE!!! No Matter what or where you are you can always go to God and the Bible for guidance. God will be our light on are path and we shall follow that light and does whatever it says.
