Psalm 119:65-72
Teth
65 You have dealt well with your servant,
O Lord, according to your word.
66 Teach me good judgment and knowledge,
for I believe in your commandments.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray,
but now I keep your word.
68 You are good and do good;
teach me your statutes.
69 The insolent smear me with lies,
but with my whole heart I keep your precepts;
70 their heart is unfeeling like fat,
but I delight in your law.
71 It is good for me that I was afflicted,
that I might learn your statutes.
72 The law of your mouth is better to me
than thousands of gold and silver pieces. (ESV)

The Psalmist describes a deep relationship between an all knowing and just God, His commands and personal well being. Being ‘afflicted’ and letting that conidtion drive one to God’s precepts is good. Lord, I want to learn Your decrees because what You want is right and precious to me!
69 Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart.
70 Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law.
These are some great verses, describing how close the writer of this is to God and how he will always follow his decrees and laws, even when the time gets tuff. Also, it’s great how this is all just driving him and keeping him going, even when he comes to “the arrogant” that smear him with lies, he always has his heart set to God and his decrees.
7 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
This verse is a perfect example of repentance! The way we live our life before we become Christians is marked by sin and disobedience to God’s Word. We lived for ourselves and were our own god. Once we place our trust in Christ our life is completely changed. We turn from our sin and turn to God, seeking out His commands by reading His Word and obeying Him. If we claim to be saved, yet have no obedience in our lives we are deceiving ourselves about our right standing with God.
1 John 2:3-4 “We know that we have come to know Him if we obey His commands. The man who says, ‘I know Him,’ but does not do what He commands is a liar, and the truth is not in Him.”
66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
The Lord has truly taught us His Word/Law. We all are sinners, afflicted and went astray, but now we obey His word. It is so important that we live as Christians and follow the Lord commandments. 72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold. That by the way, to me is an awesome verse. The law from His mouth is more precious to us than thousands pieces of silver and Gold. Awesome…
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
Wow! That’s a bold statement. This offers a couple great reminders. 1) We should not expect as “easy” life–especially as Christians. The Bible makes it clear that affliction and trials will come. 2) Times of affliction leads to growth and an increased desire for God’s Word; or you could say that trials make our lives better. Therefore, we should welcome this times and run to Scripture in their midst, so that we might grow.
A good passage to think about with this verse is James 1:1-5. We are told to consider it pure joy when we face trials because trials are going to help us become mature and complete. If you’re in a trial right now, may this encourage you to run to God’s Word!
69 Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart.
70 Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law.
The non-Christians are going to drive us away from God, with lies about how great this world is. Now the Psalmist has learned the truth and is going to follow God’s command with all his heart. Verse 70 is how I also feel about the hearts of the unsaved, they are hardened and unfeeling, and then the Psalmist says I am not like that because I delight in your Word, O God!
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
Do we really vaule God’s Word like this? If we really feel like the Psalmist we should be reading the Bible every single day!
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
A little pain and discomfort in our lives can actually be a good thing. While everyone else in the world is trying everything in their power to it and live as comfortable life as possible, this should not be so for us. Pain makes us recognize and reassert our dependence on God. When we respond to problems by turning to God in our weakness, he can display His power as he gets us through the circumstance in His way.
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weakness, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weakness, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.” 2 Corinthians 12:9,10
It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
This is so true! I have learned more in my life from trials than anything else. As I look back through those difficult times, I am truly thankful because they have taught me so much. They have brought me closer to God and have shaped and molded my character and for that I am grateful.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
We are all lost sheep that have gone astray but are founded by our Savior. and now we are saved and rescued. But we need to accept the LORDs help. and after we accept Him we rejoice and need to obey His word that He gives us. :]
***OBEY HIS COMMANDS THAT HE GIVES US :]***
66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.
Wisdom comes from God. We must rely on him in order to live obediently. Our confidence cannot be in ourselves but in GOd, the HOly Spirit. But we need to PRAY for GOd to guide us to live obedient, righteous lives. ANd he will never leave us.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
The wording in this scripture really caught my attention. “Before I was afflicated I went astray…” The Psalmist seems to be saying he was first going astray, and then he became afflicted. As Christians, the consequence of our actions by straying from God will result in either no response (that person was never a Christian to begin with) or a time of serious grievance of sins, repentance and asking God to forgive that person. It’s as if the time of affliction really caused the Psalmist to get on his knees and turn away from his sin. As a result, he now obeys His word. I love how the Psalmist lays out this pattern: first we go astray, then we become convicted of our sin, repent, get right with God, and finally we return to obeying God’s commands. I just recently went through this pattern, and rest in the fact that I am forgiven by the grace of God and can return to obeying His commands. It is an indescribable joy!
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
I like this verse because it shows something that is very wise although we break it everyday.
The psalmist says ‘BEFORE i was afflicted’ suggesting that BECAUSE he broke God’s law, it was only then he went through pain. This just shows that when we do sin, the ultimate effect is pain and straying away from God. So lets stay on the path of his laws!
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
These verses stress the importance of correction in our lives. Sometimes the pain we are going through is just a trial in our lives, but God can also use painful situations to show us where we are in sin. When we are faced with such a situation, and see the sin in our lives, we need to be quick to turn away from it and to follow the decrees of God. Just as going astray leads to affliction, obedience leads to reward!
68 You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.
I love the Psalms because they are so simple, yet to the point. This perticular verse really stood out. This shows that God is good, and what He does is good. Quite the obvious statement, but it’s a great reminder because it shows that we follow God’s commands because He is good, and He sets a good example, so we can live better lives by living for Him.
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
Is what God says more important to you that ANYTHING else in the world? Well, it should be. We need to keep in mind that what God says is the MOST important thing ever. In the end, nothing else will really matter. No idols shouls get in the way of us doing what God commands.
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
This is true for me you and your laws are more precious to me than anything and I would go to jail for that.
68 You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.
Short, sweet, and to the point. God is good and perfect, all his actions are good. We have such an opportunity to do good things in this world because we have a PERFECT God giving us instructions on how to life our life. If we follow the ten commandments we can live a Holy life according to God. If we follow Gods decrees that he has set out for us, we too can be good in this sinful world that we live in.
ANYBODY EXCITED FOR TONIGHT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
Silver and gold. Precious metals. Expensive. And still, the law of the Lord is more precious and meaningful. A beautiful picture of the greatness of God. :)
65 Do good to your servant according to your word, O LORD.
66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.
What do we really want? That is a great way to look at our lives. Is GOD first and foremost in our lives? Do we long for his commands and live for his glory? Following GOD is the greatest feeling in the world.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
Before I was a Christian i was lost and then i found God and now i obey His word. We all make mistakes also
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
For we need to learn from our mistake and turn 180 from them not 360 right back into them. If we go through trails God is always there.
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
Its crazy when we think of thousands of pieces of silver and gold! but if you think about God and what he says, that even more amazing!!! This should be what we want, and what we are striving towards. God makes those thousands of pieces of silver and gold, seem like dust.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
This verse was really cool. We were all once astray from God’s word and obedience to Him. but repentance brings us close to God and obeying His commands.
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
It may be painful at first to go through trials, and it might be more painful still if the trials are a result of our sin and we have guilt. But we shouldn’t despair because these trials show us what we are doing wrong or just help us focus more on God. I’m realizing that life involves a lot of trials, but we all ready know this because God has promised them. So instead of despairing when life gets tough, I need to instead be thankful that God has given me an opportunity to learn from and glorify Him.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word
Whenever we go astray, we fell bad because of our conscience. When we obey God’s word we feel good because we are doing what God wants us to do. So obeying God’s word doesn’t just prove your faith(make sure you got the faith though), get you right with the LORD, and get you rewards in heaven; but it also gives you peace.
Amazing versesss.
70 Their hearts are callous and unfeeling, but I delight in your law.
This just reminded me of Miss California since the Miss USA contest and what some of these people are saying about her…they are just trying to RUIN her for saying that she was a supporter of traditional marriage. I don’t understand how they can be so cold and horrible to her. But the lesson is to be learned is that she says she has no regrets- she would rather please God, even if it cost her her dream of being Miss USA. Anyway I’m praying for her and thanking God for her example!
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
We absolutely cannot take challenges in life as a sign that God doesn’t love us. When we pray for patience, often God will send us really annoying problems. Or if we pray for faith, God might send some really faith-shaking event. Just become something bad happens doesn’t mean God doesn’t care- it means there’s a lesson that needs to be learned!
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
I’m not sure if this is what this verse means but this is what i got, although it is hard to be trialed or to go through hard times, for whatever reason they always bring us crawling to God and seeking his help. So although we may be stressed, hurt, frusterated ect. our sufferings bring us closer to Christ and help strengthen our relationship with him. It is good to be tested because it reminds us of how much we need our Savior.
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
We learn from every little thing we go through. All trials mature us and strengthen us in our faith. I look back in my life and I see how God used the trials I went through for his glory and also for my own good and I’m so thankful for that. Unlike the rest of the world, we have a holy Father who loves us and comforts us when we are hurting. He is the one that gets us through hardships. Think about how hard it would be to do it all on our own!
71.) It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
Right on everyone who already commented on this verse, the trials and troubles we face in our lives are actually a good thing, it makes us realize our need for God and for a Savior.
69 Though the arrogant have smeared me with lies, I keep your precepts with all my heart.
People are constantly going to be trying to bring us down, but we have to stay strong. We just have to keep praying and staying in the word and when those kind of people come around we will have the knowledge and strength to keep God’s commands.
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
Okay so after reading a few comments on the verse I picked, I think I might have read this one right. What I got out of it is that it is good for us to be disciplined. Otherwise, how else would we know what is good and what is wrong? We need to be punished aka disciplined so that we may follow God the next time we are about to do something wrong.
The passage today reminded me that God is all knowledgable and has PERFECT judgement. He is our good teacher that will teach us how to live by His Word. :)
I need God to constantly remind me of His laws and decrees so that I may be more like Him everyday. and I also need God’s Word to be as precious to me as silver and gold! Man what an awesome statement! :O :D
I’m with Elizabeth R and Brick-E. It is encouraging to be reminded that God is good!
68 You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees.
It is because God is good that I want to know what he tells me to do. We can’t just believe in God but we must believe that he is good if we are really going to live for him.
Hebrews 11:6 – And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
It is important to remind ourselves regularly of God’s goodness, because it will motivate us to seek him earnestly!
Great to see everyone connecting at True North…let’s keep repping it here on SOTD!
66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.
the desire of the psalmist to have knowledge and good judgment rather than riches or power really shows that this guy has his priorities straight. instead of being focused on earthly riches and pleasures, he sees past that and values the word of God which will stand forever. we need to re-orient our priorities to be more focused on heaven and the life after this one.
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
Its cool to see how the Psalmist valued the Lord’s world like this… now-a-days the Bible is basically just a book… lame… its the Word of God!!!! We need to obey it and read it and meditate on it!!!
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
This stood out to be kinda funny in my mind. He says that God’s word is more precious to him than thousands of pices of gold (which i agree). But the funny think is that he is comparing this to earthly treasure, and if we obey God’s word we will be having a lot more than a few thousand pieces of gold and silver in heaven. Go figure.
72 The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.
This is amazing! Thousands of pieces of gold and silver is a lot, but God’s perfect word is far more valuable. This the greatest attitude to have toward God’s word. Of the most important value that we will have it in our minds every day.
71 It was good for me to be afflicted so that I might learn your decrees.
“There aint nuthin like a spiritual whoopin from the LORD!!” I heard someone say this once and boy is it true! When receive conviction fom the Lord because of something we have done wrong we can learn a valuable lesson about God’s decrees. The psalmist is recognizing that when God allows trials in our lives it is for a purpose. If we are truly walking with Him, we will grow closer to God during this time and we will learn by powerful example God’s decrees. We need to recognize that “affliction” in our lives can actually be gifts from God.
Psalm 119:65-72
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
I love this verse because it reminds me of when God redirected my life. A Christian is redirected towards Christ and living a life that brings glory to God. We are all born little unrepentant sinners in need of being afflicted by God with a heart change to obedience to God. No one is born a Christian just as growing up in a Christian home doesn’t make you a follower of Christ by default.
66 Teach me knowledge and good judgment, for I believe in your commands.
The Psalmist is wise in seeking knowledge and good judgment to protect him from going astray in sin.
67 Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I obey your word.
I love this verse as well Dan the man. It cause me to reflect my life when I wasn’t a Christian and think about all things I used to do. I thought it would be fun to do whatever I wanted. But then the affliction or consequences of my sins came and life began to become very dreary and depressing. Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord!
