David and Jonathan’s Friendship
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. 4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt. 5 And David went out and was successful wherever Saul sent him, so that Saul set him over the men of war. And this was good in the sight of all the people and also in the sight of Saul’s servants.
Saul’s Jealousy of David
6 As they were coming home, when David returned from striking down the Philistine, the women came out of all the cities of Israel, singing and dancing, to meet King Saul, with tambourines, with songs of joy, and with musical instruments. 7 And the women sang to one another as they celebrated,
“Saul has struck down his thousands,
and David his ten thousands.”
8 And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?” 9 And Saul eyed David from that day on.
10 The next day a harmful spirit from God rushed upon Saul, and he raved within his house while David was playing the lyre, as he did day by day. Saul had his spear in his hand. 11 And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.
12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul. 13 So Saul removed him from his presence and made him a commander of a thousand. And he went out and came in before the people. 14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. 15 And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.
David Marries Michal
17 Then Saul said to David, “Here is my elder daughter Merab. I will give her to you for a wife. Only be valiant for me and fight the Lord‘s battles.” For Saul thought, “Let not my hand be against him, but let the hand of the Philistines be against him.” 18 And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father’s clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?” 19 But at the time when Merab, Saul’s daughter, should have been given to David, she was given to Adriel the Meholathite for a wife.
20 Now Saul’s daughter Michal loved David. And they told Saul, and the thing pleased him. 21 Saul thought, “Let me give her to him, that she may be a snare for him and that the hand of the Philistines may be against him.” Therefore Saul said to David a second time, “You shall now be my son-in-law.” 22 And Saul commanded his servants, “Speak to David in private and say, ‘Behold, the king has delight in you, and all his servants love you. Now then become the king’s son-in-law.’” 23 And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?” 24 And the servants of Saul told him, “Thus and so did David speak.” 25 Then Saul said, “Thus shall you say to David, ‘The king desires no bride-price except a hundred foreskins of the Philistines, that he may be avenged of the king’s enemies.’” Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines. 26 And when his servants told David these words, it pleased David well to be the king’s son-in-law. Before the time had expired, 27 David arose and went, along with his men, and killed two hundred of the Philistines. And David brought their foreskins, which were given in full number to the king, that he might become the king’s son-in-law. And Saul gave him his daughter Michal for a wife. 28 But when Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, 29 Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually.
30 Then the princes of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed. (ESV)

ELLO… I read
I like verse 1,”As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”
I like this verse because it shows how a true friend is. They love you as much as they love themselves. They will make sacrifices to hang out with you and give up their time in order to be your friends. Friendship can not be bought but it you try hard enough to be someones friend then you will if GOD wants you to be. I need to make sure that when I try to make a friend I go all the way to make that person my friend not just try half way and see what happens.

14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.
i know that we talked a lot about the amazingly inspiring friendship between David and Jonathan at winter revival i loved the words that were used to describe there relationship as well, but the verse that really stood out to me was verse 14. i think that it gives me a real sense of security especially as i go into my big audition today!
PLEASE PRAY FOR ME! AND THAT IF IT IS GOD’S WILL I WILL HAVE THIS OPPORTUNITY!
I’m praying that God will be honored in everything you do today Shannon!
1 Sam 18:30 Then the princes of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed.
They STILL don’t get it! It’s God’s glory, not David’s. And it will come back to bite them because God will not be mocked…
1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Like Bobby said this weekend as Christians we need friends like this to keep us accountable and that truly love us and want to keep us out of sin. I need to think of friendship more as a team to fight sin than someone i think is cool or like being around, God made friends to benefit each other spiritually and always be there for the other person. I also need to work on being that kind of friend to people that im friends with, I must look at friendships with a Godly view.
.:MARANATHA:.
haha if I was Saul, I would be afraid of David too! David had God on his side…GOD! Don’t mess with him!..wouldn’t that mean people at school who do not have God. be afraid of me? Maybe some are and that’s why they don’t talk to me, I don’t know, but none of the less, II should be well known across my school as having God on my side. Today is senior ditch day for Aliso…SO it was tempting to do what everyone else was doing buuuuut in the end, I’m going to school for the Lord. :) haha along with Duarte and Stephanie! yay! I gotta be repin Christ name whereever I go, annnd all the time. I’m fearing the Lord today by doing what He says. MARANATHA!
This is a good decision. It will go well with you as you honor the Lord in ALL the choices you make :)
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. david had a good solid friend that would never go away. we need to have friends like that to stay by are side. i need to work on going out to seek friends and not just waiting for them to come to me.
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
I absolutely loved Pastor Bobby’s sermon on “As Yourself.” The friendship that David and Jonathan have is so strong and Jonathan loved David as his OWN soul! It is important to have friends who genuinely love and care about you. I am so blessed with the family of True North, and who God has put in my life! I know that there are Jonathans out there who need friends as well, and I want to be that person those people can become friends with! I am just thankful for my brothers and sisters in Christ who are so encouraging to me and who are always bringing you up! Praise the Lord! I pray for more friendships like that and that I can be a really good encourager towards those who need it!
14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. 15 And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him.
God works things out for the good of those who love him, and David was that man after God’s own heart who had such strong faith and trust in Him. The Lord was with David and Saul was jealous because of that. He was jealous of the success David had because of how God was always with Him! With God, all things are possible! I want to be like David in the way that He had such strong trust in the Lord! He is such a good example and it’s really encouraging to me.
Both David and Jonathan are quality, all-in people. Jonathan chose to give himself to David unabashadly and completely. David was challenged to bring 100 foreskins back to Saul, but instead he came back having doubled that number. I need to give my best and my all. And I need to do so for God’s glory and His Name’s sake. I need to not just do things barely, or by the skin of my neck (is that the right saying?!), but instead see all of my choices as offerings to the Lord. And if that’s so, then I need to always offer my BEST. No leftovers. With God at my Center and my WHOLE HEART in pursuit of Him.
Good morning!!!
verse 14
“And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.”
No matter who you are, GOD can make you great because HE is the FATHER of the universe and HE has supreme power over any king or person of power. David was nothing special when he was before he was anointed, he was just a shepherd. No one expected great things from David, but look what happened, David became one of the most powerful and well known men besides the king because the LORD GOD was with him and David had the right heart, he had a heart after GOD’s own.
1 “As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”
This is true friendship, to love our friends just like we would love ourselves. I need to seek out true friendships, so many of my friends are my friends because I either knew them from birth or I clicked with them at school/sports teams. That is not true friendship. It is when you seek out a person because you see he is a good friend to have and you don’t stop pursuing them. I would love to have more friends that are true Christians. Unfortunatly, it is so hard now to find good friends, it will be a battle but it will be worth it!
!!!MARANATHA!!!
14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. 15 And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him.
Because of Davids faith adn oberdience he was in the eyes of the LORD, which made Saul fearful of him, because he the LORD was not with him. Everytime Saul tried to kill or get rid of David, his plans would fail. This proves even moreso that GOD was on Davids side. No matter where David went or what happened he ALWAYS had to protection of GOD right there with him and nothing evil could harm him or touch him. I really liked this story because it is encouraging to me that if I am faithful to the LORD HE will be with me always and there to protect me and help me through life at all times. I want that. I want to know that HE is right there with me and I have nothing to be afraid of.
12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.
Saul’s selfishness is highlighted again in this passage. Saul’s primary concern as the king of Israel should have been the Lord’s honor and the people’s welfare, but instead he was primarily focused on himself. God can not have a saving relationship with someone who is more concerned with himself than God. Saul’s demise as king and his continual downfall all revolve around him putting himself above God. It got me thinking that I must not be about promoting myself in what I do, but I must be about promoting God. It is my prayer today that I would live out Matthew 6:33,”But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.” Saul sought his own advancement first, and thus all the things he had were taken from him. I desire to be nothing like Saul!
“…the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul” (v.1).
The first thing on my post-Revival to-do list was to find some on-fire, godly friends. It turns out there’s a good amount in San Clemente (go figure), I was just too lazy to go out and find them. I’m praying daily that I would have friendships like David and Jonathan, which are like the knitting together of souls. It all starts with me though. I have found the people, now I just need to build the bridge and be a friend. The rest is up to them.
I pray that all of us at True North could find godly friends so that we could grow in love and friendship, caring for each other more than ourselves, not neglecting to meet with each other, all as the Day is drawing near (Heb 10:24).
SC Small groups at my house tonight! :)
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
This verse stood out to me so much! It was truly amazing to see how much Jonathan loved David. This is a great example of a true friend. True friends LOVE each other. Not just like each other, LOVE each other! Yet, today we don`t always portray love in the right sense. Love is a really strong word. If you love someone that means your willing to lay down your life for them-just like Jesus did for us. Also it means you care for them more than yourself. Like, when their down you feel down because they are. Plus you are always encouraging each other to do the right thing. Which is so important. We all need true christians friends, just like in Bobby`s sermon. We need to be friends like Jonathan and David. And be willing to do anything for them, like Jesus laying down his life for us. Because thats what LOVE really is. :)
Wow it was cool to see that David had a good friend like Jonathan!! I pray that I can have a friend who is loving and trustworthy someone who loves the Lord and will help me grow closer to God!!
Maranatha
It is amazing, as Pastor Bobby said, how David keeps serving the king despite the fact that Saul hates him. Saul tried to kill him with a spear and challenged him to go on a dangerous mission to kill one hundred Philistines. Rather than defy Saul, David is respectful, submissive, and obeys him! That’s really amazing. I want to have this attitude toward people in authority over me.
1 Samuel 18:3-4 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul. And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.
I really want my friendships to be like the one with David and Jonathan. I need to really love my friends like they were myself. Jonathan stripped himself of his robe and gave David all of his things: thats how much he loved him and cared for him! Could I say that I would strip myself of everything I have just so my friend would prosper? I should want to see my friends grow in the Lord and help them strive towards holiness. Lord, please help me to be a more godly friend, and also provide me with godly friends who will help me grow closer to you.
1 Samuel 18:23 And Saul’s servants spoke those words in the ears of David. And David said, “Does it seem to you a little thing to become the king’s son-in-law, since I am a poor man and have no reputation?”
I also wanted to comment on this verse because it just shows how humble David was. Not only was he humble before God, but he lowered himself to the King. David knew that Saul wanted to kill him, but he still respected him and honored him because he knew that God had placed him as an authority over Israel for the time being. I need to honor my authorities even if I dont agree with them. If David can honor Saul, who wants to kill him, I can honor my authorities for God!
Wow! Great comment! I will pray for you! :)
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt
As Bobby said, we all need to have our “Jonathans” who will always be there for us and help us grow in our faith. :)
12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.
We see in this chapter, as we have in others, that David is a man after God. God has blessed Him and given David so much for He is a man after God. We even see how SAUL is afaid of David for Saul can see the Lord apon David and also David’s marriage. God is in the equation throught David’s life so far. Unlike Saul as we see who is trying to get bad things to come apon David. Also he is an enemy of David and God has told us to love our enemies. Saul is left without the Lord and wants his son Jonathon to be king, but that is not God’s will. And even Jonathon knows that. Jonathon too is a man after God and wants His will to be done. What a great friend Jonathon is to David. I need to thank the Lord for blessing me with the friends that I have and will have. :]
***Praise the LORD!!!***
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
Pastor Bobby talked about this at Revival, and it so incredibly important. As Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 say, having other Christians around us is one of the best things we can do to stay strong in our faith. And like Jonathan did with David, we need to love those people-even more than we love ourselves. In our world today, that is such a radical thought… to care about someone else in the first place is pretty rare for teenagers, but to care about other people more than to care about oneself? Unheard of. As a Christian, I need to be different and stand out from the world, and this is one of the ways to do it. I have some amazing christians friends. I need to completely and utterly love those people! As Bobby talked about, they need to be my soul mates. Not as in marriage, but like the bond that Jonathan and David had. Their souls were one. Jonathan loved David more than himself! I want to show this kind of love to my friends! Secondly, I also need to show the kind of love that God has shown me to non-christians. Before I was a Christian, the amount of love that other Christians showed me was something that drew me in, appealed to me. If non-christians see Christians that are truly showing them Godly love, they will be amazed at how radical and wild that is, no matter what they believe, and wonder why Christians are like that! Constantly I hear non-believers calling Christians hypocrites. We need to change that! I need to be a person that represents love, as well as the all the other Godly characteristics to everyone I come into contact with. I need to show the love!
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
This verse as we looked at during Winter Revival is very powerful and makes me really think about getting new Christian friends. This week, I have been making a better effort at connecting with my Christian friends at school.
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt
when jonathan gives david his things, it shows the jonathan knows that david is next in line to be king. what i really like about jonathan in this passage is how he doesnt get jealous of david, but supports him and stands up for him. as pastor bobby talked about in his last sermon at revival, we need to be supporting our friends, and care about their futures, not just our own. in my life i sometimes get jealous or upset when someone gets a position i want. but my attitude in these situations is selfish and unbiblical. instead, i need to be happy for my brother in Christ. another thing that this verse reminds me of is that i need to be totally devoted to God’s glory and His plan. even though someone else may get the position or thing that i want, i need to be recognizing that God is in control. please Lord, help me to look beyond myself and to love others as You have loved me!
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Jonathan loved David as much as he loved himself if not more. It is a true love like this that we should have for our brothers and sisters in Christ. Jonathan has characteristics that we should all emmulate in our lives. “What greater love is there than this, that he lay his life down for his friend.” Jesus Christ laid his life down for us that we may live forever with Him. Wouldnt we want to be as much like Jesus as possible. So wouldnt we copy this love.
David is such an incredible character!! David receives so many blessings from the Lord as a true servant, it just reminded me that God really does bless those who serve Him with all their heart!! Looking back at my life from the point of salvation till now, it’s amazing seeing how God has blessed me!! THANK YOU LORD!! :D
14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him. 15 And when Saul saw that he had great success, he stood in fearful awe of him. 16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.
He had success in everything because God was with him. He defeated Goliath, he became king, and defeated two hundred philistines all because the Lord was with him. When God is with us he will bless us, even if w think that there is no good in it. God turns the bad to good, and he works for the good in all things.
1 Samuel 18:30 Then the princes of the Philistines came out to battle, and as often as they came out David had more success than all the servants of Saul, so that his name was highly esteemed
Wow, what extremes David had to go through to be king. Saul was after him and wanted the Philistines to defeat him. But David was on God’s side and God protected David. He was favored over Saul throughout Israel. And he was also successful at defeating the Philistines.
God put David through a lot to become the king. Yet David was obedient to God, so he was favored in Gods eyes. Obedience is so important to God. I love reading the Old testament because It reveals God’s passion for us to obey Him and His strong hatred for sin. Davids favor was brought on by obedience, and God loved obedience, so as a Christian I need to be obedient to God and have a hatred for sin.
Great post :)
And link :)
Your paintings are really good :)
11 And Saul hurled the spear, for he thought, “I will pin David to the wall.” But David evaded him twice.
This is how people felt about us spreading the word of God to people and now they just ignore us but we still need to spread the word to everyone everyday we have a chance.
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
We need to love other people. Just like Bobby said Sunday that we need to be like Jonathan’s. We need to be united. There should be no one who is against other people, like any “Saul’s” in the group. It’s sad to think that a student told me to “get off the bus” serveral times after that morning right after Bobby preached a sermon about loving other people because they personally don’t like me.
Loving someone is the greatest feeling. I remember going to small groups last wednesday, a week ago from today. If you saw my heart, my love was overflowing for the people at the small group. Last week was like the first time in my life, where I could honestly say that I love other people as much as myself. Jesus commanded that we love others a lot, we need to really think about how we should be trying to apply loving other people. Wheather it’s just listening to someone when they talk or just helping them out with their problems. I’m still loving other people today and I think it helps me out with being obedient to the Lord. (well outside the fact that it’s being obedient by obeying God’s command to love other people)
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
True Friendship! Johnathan was supposed to be king but God chose David, and Johnathan liked that he was king. Johnathon and David are amazing friends, johnathan thinks of David as his own soul. We all need a johnathan in our lives. Yeah winter Revival!! <333
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
This type of friendship is rarely seen in the OC. The last Revival sermon was really great and convicting to me because. The word love has been so compromised yet here it says that Jonathan loved David. One thing that stood out to me was that if I don’t make an effort to pursue friendships then that’s because I don’t love them. I know that as a human it is hard because I realize that is has to cost me something like feeling vulnerable or building the whole bridge all the way there but a friend like Jonathan is so worth it. I want to be around people who will build me up, encourage me, and keep me accountable through Christ. I pray that I can continue to make new godly friends and truly love them.
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.
This is so cool the Jonathan gave all he had to david. I need to be like Jonathan and give to my friends all that I can. My friendships should be like jonathan and david
Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.
Saul sent David to his death, but the lord was with David not Saul so David Succeeded in his gruesome act…
haha I like how gory the bible is.
I love this chapter! When reading about David and Jonathan’s friendship, it made me think about the friendships I have in my own life. Jonathan and David were definitely as close as friends can be. I want the friendships in my life to imitate that of their’s. Can I really say that I would give up everything, even my own life, for my friends? In the Christian walk, godly friends are so important to have! The friends who we choose to hang out with, end up defining us as well. For accountability and encouragement, we can only count on friends who have the same mind as us. I am praying that I would be this kind of friend, that I would genuinly care about them and not want to see sin in their lives, encourage them, and never let jealous get in the way but always be ready to put their desires, needs, and wants above my own.
Great comment! :)
Awesome comment! I will also pray for you! :)
one of the number one things i am praying for right now is to have a friendship like david and jonathan with mainly my two closest friends but also with all of my other friends. it seems that high school changes alot of people when they enter it and it seems like that has happened to the people around me (or maybe im the one who has changed) but with this change for some reason friendships become strained or seem to dissapear. this should never happen between Christians. i need to let go of anything in the way and be friends because of Christ. and with my closer friends we need to continue striving to make Jesus Christ the center of our friendship and we need to love each other like brothers in Christ.
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And Saul was very angry, and this saying displeased him. He said, “They have ascribed to David ten thousands, and to me they have ascribed thousands, and what more can he have but the kingdom?”
This is a great verse. It shows how bad jealousy is. Jealousy is very easy to fall into and I tend to struggle with it quite a bit. The Lord hates jealousy so much that after Saul said this, the Lord left him but stayed with David. I pray that no matter what happens or how i feel, that I will always make war against any and every sin in my life until the day I die!!
14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.
Just a great reminder that when we follow and obey the Lord, HE will guide us and give us success. When God calls us to do something, we need to be ready to jump up and go and do it. David had this character that he was willing to follow God wherever he was lead!
By being a servant to the Lord, David recieved many blessings. When we have God on our side anything is possible! I would have loved to have been there when David came back with all the philistines foreskins… saul’s expression on his face must have been priceless! I wonder what he was thinking… Also, I like how determined Jonathan was to be David’s friend. There was nothing that could stop him from developing a relationship with David, even a father. It must take A LOT of love for someone to go against their parents and help a friend. That truly is friendship. That is the sort of friend I want to be. I want to be someone who goes out of their way to help a friend in need, even if it’s not exactly convenient…
I read…
Verse 25… “…Now Saul thought to make David fall by the hand of the Philistines.”
In this passage, Saul’s price for his daughter’s marriage to David was to kill 100 Philistines. The Scripture points out that Saul hoped that through this, David would die. This was not so because the Lord was with David. Sometimes, as Saul did, we think we can avoid God’s plan by creating our own schemes and plots. However, the Lord’s plan will always prevail. I need to fix my plans more closely to God’s so that I will always do His will and not my own because He has to perfect way for me.
I really don’t get this new posting site. It’s too confusing. Fancy, but I miss the old one. This verse is great because it shows the price of pride. Pride is a major sin, but when we see it in out lives we often disregard it. GOD hates pride, and, as he says, pride comes before the fall.
In this chapter, it reminded me how i must not be jealous like Saul is of David. Verses 7-10 Saul is very angry and jealous of Daniel. I know that i get jealous sometimes, but there is no reason to be jealous of others because i have my own life to live for God and he has give ME so much! These verses also show how prideful Saul was! Also, i must not get prideful beacuse God hates pride and love humility!
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
I think it is awesome how Jonathan and David made a covenant! That would be so cool if people today would do that! They loved each other as them self which is so awesome. I must love everyone, even my enemies! It is so hard to love those who judge you or do everything you disagree with, but that is definitely something that i need to be praying about. I need to be loving everyone…as myself!
- As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
This is a true friend! Not only do we need to be looking for a friend like this, but we also have to act like a friend like this. We cannot forget to encourage our fellow Christian friends and constantly remind each other of the Lord!
28 But when Saul saw and knew that the Lord was with David, and that Michal, Saul’s daughter, loved him, 29 Saul was even more afraid of David. So Saul was David’s enemy continually.
When Saul found out that David was backed up by God, he greatly feared him. This is because once God wants something done, it will be done. God is so powerful that people would fear His name because they knew of how Israel would vanquish other nations when the odds seemed slim. Unfortunately, God doesn’t get that much respect nowadays. Still, I should show others God’s glory by living my life for Him and not conforming to the world!
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
This verse is so awesome! I love Jonathan’s heart and how he loved David as his own soul!!! Jonathan was so humble! He put David before himself even though he knew that David was meant to be king when that was his rightful position. Jonathan loved David jsut as himself! That is so crazy to think about in the times we are in now! As southern orange county teenagers, we see everyone and all the famous people completely obsessed with themselves. That is not how God calls me as a Christian to be though!! He calls me to love one another and put them above myself. I want to be like Jonathan and be a friend like that to others where I truly love them and want them to grow in God and put their needs above my own!
Wow Haley this is an awesome comment. I love you and keep the comments coming. Woooo
1 “As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.”
I absolutely loved this message at Revival! David and Jonathon had such an amazingly Godly relationship! This is something i need to strive for with my christian friends. I should care more about them than i care about myself, just like David and Jonathon did. I need to put their needs and feelings far above my own and try to always be encouraging and helpful.
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
I loved how in Pastor Bobby’s sermon on Christian friends, he pointed out that David and Jonathon were soulmates, meaning their souls were “knit” together, and one cared about the other as much as himself. I should strive to love others, and especially to find a Jonathon and act like a David. One of the best prizes in life is having a true friend who understands and loves you unconditionally and will hold you accountable to God’s standards. I am so thankful that this year I have grown closer to the souls I know are saved because they have strengthened me and I hope to help strengthen others :)
12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.
This verse stood out to me because Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him. I think so many times it is the other way around. I’m afraid of other people because they are non-Christians and I’m afraid of what they will think of me. But the thing is, I have God on my side, therefore I shouldn’t be afraid of them but they should be afraid of me! :) Now, I don’t expect people to be afraid of me but I do need to remember that I am not to fear man but fear God.
1 Samuel 18:3 “Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.”
A covenant to people in biblical times was worth so much more than a promise is worth today. I want to be able to make covenants as strong as the ones made in biblical times to God to show Him how much I truly love Him. I respect the love that Jonathan and David had as brothers in Christ and as friends. Jonathan and David are perfect examples of true friends, friends that we need to be surrounded with that have Christ as their first priority in life. I loved how Jonathan instead of getting jealous and angry with the fact that David was to be kind expressed his love and humility to David.
16 But all Israel and Judah loved David, for he went out and came in before them.
The Israelites were able to rally around David because he led by example. he was someone who did not stand back aloof from his men, but went out with them and was there to fight by their side. More than that, it was evident that God was with him, which made him even more desirable to be around. This is the way that mature Christians need to be to younger believers. As someone who’s been a Christian, I need to be seeking out younger believers and encouraging them in their faith. And therefore, my life needs to be something that they can model, in conduct, speech, and desire for God and His Word. I need to resolve not only to seek out close mature Christian Jonathans, but also opportunities to come alongside newer believers and take a personal interest in their spiritual growth.
12 Saul was afraid of David because the Lord was with him but had departed from Saul.
I really enjoyed this verse because it showed how having the Lord within you is the most powerful things anyone can ever have. Not only did David understand that, Saul noticed that having the Lord within you is amazing. I think this verse can be used in everyday life because many people do not believe in the Lord and do not have the spiritual connection with him, but as we believe and preach to those who do not have the connection can make other people seek for gods word!
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
This verse stood out to me tonight. As I was sitting listening to the sermons this weekend, it made me realize how important it is to LOVE one another, especially our brothers and sisters in Christ. I am so thankful for the sisters the Lord has blessed me with. It’s nice to know I will always have those few friends in my life that encourage, pray, and keep me accountable. I want to make sure that I am a good friend too, always there to serve them in anyway possible, and doing it not for selfish reasons, but for the glory of God. Keep your Christian friends close and always thank God for them! And if you feel like you don’t have any, then pray and God will be faithful and bring the right people in your life.
14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.
When God has your back nothing is impossible. Saul sends David out against the Philistines hoping that he will die but every time he comes back victorious and the people of Isael like him even more than before. Saul is afraid of David because he knows that God is with David and notices that he can’t kill David.
1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
The sermons at winter revival were awesome. it is important to have close christian friends that you can tell anything to so you can help eachother in times of temptation. If you don’t have anyone to help you it is a lot easier to give in to temptation.
And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.
I like this verse because it show that David was successfule because the Lord was with him. David’s succes was dependent on the Lord not on himself. I need to learn this lesson. I pray that I will learn to rely on God in absolutely everything at all times. Not just some of the time.
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
Soulmates! I thought it was so great when Pastor Bobby said that this past weekend because I’ve always described my best friend as my soulsister. I love her so much and I would do anything for her, she is so encouraging to me and we build eachother up and confront eachother about sin. I know that I can rely on her to help me stay on track! What I’m encouraged to do now is do that for more people– I want to encourage others like by best friend encourages me!
I loved the first verse. It’s starts off so strong and lovely. Knowing someone like David wanted to bring someone higher than he was. David had a soul mate that he loved as his own. That is a great example in how are actions should be in this world. But, we have things that keep is down . The world definetly is what keeps us compromising. I hope all of us have a soul mate and if not I hope you get one soon. Also I loved this sermon at winter revival. Let’s keep it going.
David and Johnathan’s friendship here is mind blowing to me! This comment will be short but I just wanted to say that this message at revival really stuck out to me that I need to be pursuing friends that love the lord like I do…otherwise, what do we have in common? I need to pray for a best friend as demonstrated here that will encourage me in my walk with the Lord!
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
Love between a man and a woman is what Love makes most people think of but it says here Jonathan LOVED David, and obviously not that way. Those are some powerful emotions. However, we should have a friend like that, a Spiritual Soul Mate that we care about more than ourselves. It’s always good to go into battle with someone watchin’ your back.
1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
This chapter starts off pretty good. Pastor Bobby spoke this weekend and RWE and it really made me think if I had a person like Jonathan in my life and I’m not to sure that there really is. I pray to God that he will provide me with a strong christian friend where we can encourage and account for each other, although I know that someone like that isn’t going to just walk into my life, I still pray God will provide and that I would take the initiative, the first step.
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 2 And Saul took him that day and would not let him return to his father’s house. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.—I love these verses and they remind me of the sermon that Pastor Bobby preached on at Revival about our friendships! This reminds me that I need to always be seeking out Christian friends that will encourage me and be in my face when I mess up! And I can do the same for them just by encouraging them and be praying for their relationship with the LORD. I also love that Jonathan wasn’t jealous about David taking Jonathan’s spot! I know when you have a really close friend, it may be hard for you to see them get something that you think you deserved. Sometimes it’s hard but I need to be loving and be happy for that person and know that God wanted them to be in that postion. Jonathan put David before himself and loved him as himself. I need to be doing this! I need to just stop caring about my own needs and help others out for a change! This week I am going to reach out to others and build the bridge with people that I know need it so I can encourage them in any way(:
MARANATHA!!!
Praying for the Revival to continue!!
One thing I am excited about doing after Revival is increasing my friendships with some people. I am praying that God will bring me closer together with my brothers and sisters in Christ!
Also, please pray for me as I preach in the main service this weekend!
Definitely Pastor Bobby!!!
Man jealousy can make a man crazy…Saul was looking out for number one…so whatever made number one feel good made sense to him…Even if in reality it was stupid…I mean killing David, what would that solve…he was a great fighter…so he would loose a great soldier…he was a man whom God was with…so killing him would be a sin against God…but because Saul was only looking out for himself…he didn’t care…I want to realize that I am not the center of the universe and wory about God’s will and not my own.
I like this because it shows us how we need to humble ourselves and be servants to others and to reach out and find brothers and sisters in Christ so we can all fellowship together.
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Jonathan loved David. Jonathan pursued David. Jonathan cared for David. This past weekend Pastor Bobby spoke on David and Jonathan’s relationship. He used Proverbs 18:24 which says: “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” This really caught my attention because I find myself having many acquaintances, but do I have a Jonathan with whom I am knit together with? I find it interesting as well that it says “knit” instead of “bonded to” the soul of David or “was connected with” the soul of David. Using the word “knit” implies closeness, implies not easily separated, and implies something that did not just spontaneously happen. This display of friendship is a perfect example of how we are to be following Christ in a community of believers.
14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.
How cool to think that because the Lord was with David, he granted him success. Although the things (killing the 200 Philistines) seemed impossible to Saul, David successfully completed the mission given to him. The success was due entirely to the Lord’s complete control of the situation and leading the steps of David’s life. I need to always remember that God has complete control. None of his plans can be altered or should be altered because he is perfectly sovereign!
18:1 As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
At Winter Camp, Pastor Bobby was saying how we all need Jonathons in our lives, fellow brothers or sisters who are strong in the faith. This week I am looking for my Godly friends and I think a huge part of it is prayer. Yet like Bobby was saying, we cant just sit back and wait for them to come to us because we prayed. God will provide, but it’s up to us to figure out who he has provided and pursue that relationship by building our bridge all the way across to the other side.
1. As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.
Wow. Talk about connection!
Jonathan was so attached to David, he made a literal bond with him.
Now THAT is love.
I don’t think I’ll ever love anyone that much till the day I get married!
And these two just met!
That’s a literal soul mate.
And the love he has for David is unending and completely limitless.
That’s so inspirational!
I aspire to have that kind of relationship with God.
Where I will do absolutely anything for Him, and NOTHING will EVER stop me.
I want Him to be my soul mate.
That is my prayer God, help me to learn to love you as Jonathan loved David. Help me to love you with an unending, undying passion.
I want you to be my eternal soul mate, Lord!
Not my will Lord, but yours be done.
9 And Saul eyed David from that day on.
I think I was struck most by Sauls jealous heart and in turn his motives. He was so concerned with David I would say he went crazy. We see this so clearly in Saul that he goes mad and tries to spear David. Jealousy will eat away at your soul. Also each time he tried to marry his daughter it was so that David would get distracted and killed by the Philistines. It just shows how jealousy will corrupt you. But then in contrast we see his son Jonathan who was a great example to us as christians in that he did not respond in jealousy with David but loved him as his own soul. As we will see there was no bitterness in Jonathan against David just overflowing spirit of love. I pray that my friendships are overflowing with love and that I wouldn’t allow my sinful nature to corrupt the godly friendships that he has placed in my life. May I rejoice when great things happen to my friends and be a support to them, and not covet when they are blessed.
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
Just as pastor Bobby preached this past weekend, we need godly friends. And not relationships where we see each other every now and again, talk about some random things, maybe ask each other how we’re doing, and then go on with our lives. No. Like pastor Bobby said, we need love, real love as described in the Bible. A genuine concern and care for someone other than myself, so much that I would be willing to sacrifice for that person. That’s the kind of relationship that Jonathan and David had, and that is–I believe–the kind of relationship God wants every one of His people to have. Although pastor Bobby talks about this frequently, this weekend I was a bit convicted in this area, and now I am resolved to be praying for this kind of friend regularly, until God shows me the “Jonathan” in my life.
18 And David said to Saul, “Who am I, and who are my relatives, my father’s clan in Israel, that I should be son-in-law to the king?”
In addition to his heart after God and his close relationship with Jonathan, however, David was also a humble man. No, he was not perfect. Yes, he did sin big time and mess up frequently. But he realized where he had come from, how lowly he really was, before both God and the king. This is truly exemplary behavior. God, please give me a humble heart like David’s!
Verses 1-5 talk about David and Jonathan’s friendship. It says their souls were knit together. After pastor bobby preached on this section at revival, I started to pray that God would help me find a Jonathan…If you are not surrounded by godly friends, you will be devoured by the devil. You can’t do this alone, and God does not want you to do it alone. So for those of you who have Jonathans in your life…hold on to them tight and never let go because that relationship could end up being one of the most important you will ever have.
As soon as he had finished speaking to Saul, the soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul. 3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul.
I love these verses from Revival Winter Edition! When we make friends, it’s important that their Christians that our friendships will build up our relationship with God instead of tearing down our relationship with God. I liked too how we need to go seek Christian friends not just wait for them to come to us. And when were friends with someone or not we should put them before ourselves completely and always be there for them.
3 Then Jonathan made a covenant with David, because he loved him as his own soul
This is pretty deep. Jonathan loved David so much that it was just like how he loves his own soul. Here in this verse we find him making a covenant to David, his word which stands stronger than one of our modern-day promises. Jonathan had all the right for the throne of Israel by definition of how a monarchy works. We look at the history of countries all around, and the throne is passed down in the royal family. The first to inherit the kingdom would be the firstborn son of the king, and that would have been Jonathan. But instead, God had plans to bring up David as king. Jonathan could have been angered at the loos of opportunity for himself, but instead he rejoiced for David.
The position of king seems like a pretty nice role to have. In charge of the nation, ruling over the people. But Jonathan recognized that it wasn’t God;s will for him to be king, and that God held plans for David. I need to seek to be a Jonathan to the Davids around me. I need to not always be after my own glory and the things that I can get. I need to be thinking of others, what will benefit my friends. I can be thinking of how I can urge them to grow spiritually and how to encourage them to live as God wants them to. I need to be an unselfish friend who is genuinely interested in the lives of the people around me. I need to love others as I love my own soul!
A friend is one soul in two bodies…
1 Samuel 18
Romans 8:31 31 What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
What a great example of what happens when you are faithful to the Lord. The Lord was with David and he was successful in everything he did. When you allow God to direct your footsteps He will give you success. Saul did not receive the same blessings of success as David because his heart was divided. Jonathans covenant with David is ironically like that of our covenant with Christ. Jonathan joined himself to David like a Christian is joined to Christ by an everlasting covenant. I am so thankful for the lessons that we can learn here with David and Jonathan. I pray that relationships at True North will never be the same again because of Jonathan and David. If we mirror our relationships after these guys True North will become a powerful force for God.
4 And Jonathan stripped himself of the robe that was on him and gave it to David, and his armor, and even his sword and his bow and his belt.
Whoa there. That is extremely caring an unselfish of Jonathan to do that! He saw what David needed and he gave it to him! Not just one or two things, but he gave his robe AND his armor! That is a pretty nice thing to do! I need to have that attitude of unselfishness toward others, and put others, especially friends, before myself!
14 And David had success in all his undertakings, for the Lord was with him.
We shouldn’t fear anything because the Lord is with us in everything we do and may it be His will on everything. God is amazing and I trust Him and have faith in him.
i love the verses today and God is good .
