1 Samuel 17

1 Samuel 17

David and Goliath

17:1 Now the Philistines gathered their armies for battle. And they were gathered at Socoh, which belongs to Judah, and encamped between Socoh and Azekah, in Ephes-dammim. And Saul and the men of Israel were gathered, and encamped in the Valley of Elah, and drew up in line of battle against the Philistines. And the Philistines stood on the mountain on the one side, and Israel stood on the mountain on the other side, with a valley between them. And there came out from the camp of the Philistines a champion named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span. He had a helmet of bronze on his head, and he was armed with a coat of mail, and the weight of the coat was five thousand shekels of bronze. And he had bronze armor on his legs, and a javelin of bronze slung between his shoulders. The shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam, and his spear’s head weighed six hundred shekels of iron. And his shield-bearer went before him. He stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Why have you come out to draw up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not servants of Saul? Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants. But if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.” 10 And the Philistine said, “I defy the ranks of Israel this day. Give me a man, that we may fight together.” 11 When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were dismayed and greatly afraid.

12 Now David was the son of an Ephrathite of Bethlehem in Judah, named Jesse, who had eight sons. In the days of Saul the man was already old and advanced in years. 13 The three oldest sons of Jesse had followed Saul to the battle. And the names of his three sons who went to the battle were Eliab the firstborn, and next to him Abinadab, and the third Shammah. 14 David was the youngest. The three eldest followed Saul, 15 but David went back and forth from Saul to feed his father’s sheep at Bethlehem. 16 For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.

17 And Jesse said to David his son, “Take for your brothers an ephah of this parched grain, and these ten loaves, and carry them quickly to the camp to your brothers. 18 Also take these ten cheeses to the commander of their thousand. See if your brothers are well, and bring some token from them.”

19 Now Saul and they and all the men of Israel were in the Valley of Elah, fighting with the Philistines. 20 And David rose early in the morning and left the sheep with a keeper and took the provisions and went, as Jesse had commanded him. And he came to the encampment as the host was going out to the battle line, shouting the war cry. 21 And Israel and the Philistines drew up for battle, army against army. 22 And David left the things in charge of the keeper of the baggage and ran to the ranks and went and greeted his brothers. 23 As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him.

24 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid. 25 And the men of Israel said, “Have you seen this man who has come up? Surely he has come up to defy Israel. And the king will enrich the man who kills him with great riches and will give him his daughter and make his father’s house free in Israel.” 26 And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?” 27 And the people answered him in the same way, “So shall it be done to the man who kills him.”

28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.” 29 And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” 30 And he turned away from him toward another, and spoke in the same way, and the people answered him again as before.

31 When the words that David spoke were heard, they repeated them before Saul, and he sent for him. 32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.” 33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him. 36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” 37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor. He put a helmet of bronze on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail, 39 and David strapped his sword over his armor. And he tried in vain to go, for he had not tested them. Then David said to Saul, “I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them.” So David put them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand and chose five smooth stones from the brook and put them in his shepherd’s pouch. His sling was in his hand, and he approached the Philistine.

41 And the Philistine moved forward and came near to David, with his shield-bearer in front of him. 42 And when the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was but a youth, ruddy and handsome in appearance. 43 And the Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?” And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44 The Philistine said to David, “Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and to the beasts of the field.” 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord‘s, and he will give you into our hand.”

48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine. 49 And David put his hand in his bag and took out a stone and slung it and struck the Philistine on his forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell on his face to the ground.

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David. 51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled. 52 And the men of Israel and Judah rose with a shout and pursued the Philistines as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron, so that the wounded Philistines fell on the way from Shaaraim as far as Gath and Ekron. 53 And the people of Israel came back from chasing the Philistines, and they plundered their camp. 54 And David took the head of the Philistine and brought it to Jerusalem, but he put his armor in his tent.

55 As soon as Saul saw David go out against the Philistine, he said to Abner, the commander of the army, “Abner, whose son is this youth?” And Abner said, “As your soul lives, O king, I do not know.” 56 And the king said, “Inquire whose son the boy is.” 57 And as soon as David returned from the striking down of the Philistine, Abner took him, and brought him before Saul with the head of the Philistine in his hand. 58 And Saul said to him, “Whose son are you, young man?” And David answered, “I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite.” (ESV)

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 37,”And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!””

I like this verse because it talks about how much faith David had in GOD. HE did not view the giant as someone that could not be beaten he viewed him as someone who was cursing GOD and he wanted GOD to show the giant that HE was there. David relied on GOD for the stone to nail the giant in the head and had faith that it would. GOD rewarded David with success because of his faith. I need to have faith that GOD will do anything for me as long as I have faith and its according to HIS will.

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

David knew full well that he was not going to go to battle against Goliath and strike him down by his own power with sword or spear. But David did have confidence of victory because his confidence was in the LORD. He had seen what Goliath was doing every day while waiting for a challenger to rise. He came out and openly mocked both them and God, and would then return to the camp at the end of the day to do the same the next day. And David could not stand to see God’s name mocked as it was being done. So David took a stand to take down Goliath in battle. One reason for his victory was his motive behind what he did. He didn’t want to defeat Goliath to save the people, that he may be made well known and praised among all of the people. His focus was on that God was being mocked, and he had to put an end to the foolish insulter if no one else would. And because he was focused on defeating Goliath for God’s sake, and because his reliance was in God’s power alone, not his own, David was able to slay the giant.

I need to keep my confidence in God alone. I can’t be trusting in the things of this world, however I know that I can always trust in God. God is faithful-Always fulfilling what he says he will do. God is eternal-Always there existing from the beginning and forever more. God is Immutable-Never ceasing to be who he is, unchanging. These are just a few of the many attributes of God, all proving how God is worth trusting in. And when I am faced with a situation, I need to do the right thing, but also doing it for the right reason. Just because I do a good act, that doesn’t make it good, for I need to watch my motives. My motive in the way that I live my life needs to be all for God. I can’t be living for the reason to glorify myself, but instead I must life for God to be rightfully exalted above all else!

32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him.

David had his eye on the Prize. He didn’t let anyone or anything de-rail him or his pursuit of the Lord. Every day we are confronted with obstacles and potential impediments to our faith in the Lord. It is critical that no person, set of circumstances, or temptation cause our hearts for the Lord to fail.

I also appreciate how David’s focus on the Lord brought him to think outside the box. Every Israelite seemed to think he had to go against Goliath with a sword. But David thought outside of the box–he let the Lord take him to an obscure territory, and God utilized the gifts of shepherding that He’d bestowed upon David by going for the stones and the slingshot. I like that :)

what an awesome story! i really loved digging into this chapter during revival and not only knowing the basic outline of this same story that we have all heard since pre-school but really picking each verse apart and understanding the message that God Himself is trying to portray to us throughout the life of David. There are so many lessons to be learned throughout this story. having Faith in our Lord that by His will we will always conquer, that we are not too young to do big things for his kingdom all we have to do is make sure we are obedient in the little things to begin with, and that no one should defy our God because no one has the right!!!! GREAT GREAT GREAT chapter!!!!<33333

David saw that Goliath mocked the name of the Lord…tstsktsk! I need to make sure I keep watch for that around me and fix that because my God is being dishonored everytime a high schooler or teacher says it! Can you imagine how much shame is put upon God whenever someone says it? Honestly! How horrible must God feel! BUT God is perfect and He will judge according to one’s sins. I told my Bible Lit teacher after class had ended to stop saying “oh my God” because it was offensive to my God. She says she’s a Christian so I helped her out a bit. I pray that I may do that with everyone who takes God’s name in vain because God deserves so much more than that!!!! He is mighty to save. :) MARANATHA!

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

david looks back to when he was in trouble, and recognizes that the Lord delivered him from danger. because david remembered that God delivered him, he knew he could count on the Lord to deliver him from the giant goliath. david knows that because the Lord saved him in the past, He will save him in the future. in my life there are many times when the Lord has saved me in the temporal sense. there are many things where i wasnt trusting in God, and He still delivered me. these instances need to give me more trust in God, because i know of His power to save me. just as david looked back on his life and saw God working, i too need to look back in my life and remember God’s goodness to me. i need to be trusting in God and having faith in what He will do for me. david was also unafraid because of his faith. he knew that because he had the Lord on his side, goliath could not harm him. i have God on my side, and i know that He will never leave me nor forsake me (Hebrews 13:5). no matter what people do to me, no one can harm my soul, nor affect where i will end up when i die. please Lord, help me to live like david did, with a heart after Your own heart, and with faith in You!

Mmmmmm like Bobby has said many times this is real trash talking!
Even though David was a youth which most likely means he was about our age he had more faith in God than anyone else did. Also David was infuriated that someone had talked down on his God and he knew that God would give him into his hand, what faith I want the faith David had in the Lord that even though something seemed impossible he conquered Goliath and honored the name of the Lord at the same time. I want to be more like David and have complete faith in God all the time, be a warrior of Christ!!!

26 “And David said to the men who stood by him, ‘What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach of Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?’”

David was putting God above all else, he truly loved God with all his heart, soul, and mind. That is the reason why he fought Goliath, and that is also the reason why he won. If I truly love God, I would be angry at those who make fun of Him, I should be bothered. When I hear or see something that disrespects God, I need to go confront him/her and rebuke. I can’t be a hypocrite saying, “I truly love God, ” when I don’t even bother to stick up for Christ. I need to work on that.

    Good Morning!!!

    Verse 37
‘And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”’

David has an amazing amount of faith in GOD and he truly believes, as I do, that GOD is ever powerful and can do anything because HE has power over all of us including the Philistines and Goliath. LORD you are THE power in the universe and YOU can do anything.

  11. Beth Lauder says:

36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”

The thing that stood out to me today was how David made the most of his youth and it prepared him for this big moment when he was called to deliver Israel from Goliath and the Philistines. As a boy David was called to be a shepherd and in this passage we see how David was faithful in that job, protecting his sheep from vicious animals who threatened to devour them. He trusted God to deliver him and his sheep when they were in danger. Since he had a pattern of trusting God in the small things, trusting God in something big like defeating Goliath came easily to him. I noticed how all the men of Israel, even King Saul, were afraid to fight Goliath because they all looked at the outward circumstances of his height and might. David was the one willing to fight Goliath because he looked past his physical appearance and impressive armor and remembered that the omnipotent God of the universe was on his side. I pray that I am faithful with the little things in my life, that I establish a pattern of obedience and trust in God, so that when I am called to do something big I am ready!

And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

As many of you have already noted and as we learned at Revival: Winter Edition this weekend, David shows us that we should always stand up for our faith in the everlasting God! I have endless opportunities to defend our God throughout the day, yet I let them pass by without doing anything. I figure its not worth getting into an argument or an awkward conversation. The truth is that we are not here to always have meaningless, non-awkward conversations. We are here to make disciples and tell others that Jesus died to save them from their sins. That will always be an awkward conversation! It’s not supposed to give them warm-fuzzies! This chapter really helped remind me (yet again) why I am still here on earth. To defend and proclaim the good news that Christ took the punishment for us, and that we can spend eternity in heaven with Him. If Christ really is my savior, I want others to know about Him too!

  13. Melissa Cox says:

48 When the Philistine arose and came and drew near to meet David, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet the Philistine.

This verse shows the depth of David’s faith. As he faced the giant man, rather than wait for him to come near, or reluctantly and fearfully approach Goliath, David RAD to meet him. David had so much confidence in God. He ran to meet the enemy because he knew the battle belonged to the Lord and that with God on his side, he couldn’t lose! I want to approach the obstacles in my every day life with the same courage and faith.

What A Great chapter to start my week off! Everytime I read this Chapter about David and Goliath I get so encouraged!!! This chapter talks about David defeating a giant!!! David is just a boy!!! But becuase he trusts God and knows he will help him through this fight, David kills Goliath!!! I get so excited when I read this chapter!! It is one of my favorites!!! It is so Good to see David’s love for God!!!

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

I like that David said straight forward that that he was a servant of God!!! That shows you how much he loves and honors the Lord!!!!!! I pray that I can be more like him!!!!!

I dont have a specific verse that I pulled out of this chapter and that I personally like. I love this whole story because it shows that a teenager, like us, can do amazing things through God. It might not always be killing a 9 foot Philistine with a sling and some rocks and than decaptitating the man, but we can bring people to Christ, or start a Revival in our schools!

  16. Dan Lauder says:

46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, 47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

David fought the Philistine for the reputation of God’s name not his own. By this statement we can see that he is interested primarily in God’s glory. Although the odds were stacked against him, because he trusted in God and had the goal of giving God glory and not himself, he is victorious. What an example for us to do “big things” for God. We can be successful if we keep God’s glory as our primary objective.

  17. Dave Hosford, celebrating Christmas and Easter today says:

1 Sam 17:47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

For every righteous battle is the Lord’s. The question today is: are we in the right battle? And on God’s side in that battle? It’s a choice: the flesh or Spirit. Seek Him and He will make your paths straight even if we ‘lose’ or suffer for Christ in this world. The commands are clear. Choose the power of God and never lose what is important!

  18. KYLE JOHNSON :) says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Probably one of the well most known story in the Bible! David, who is only just a kid who defeats Goliath! Everyone feared Goliath and were not willing to face him. But David had such strong faith in God. David trusted that God would give Him victory over His enemies and that God is faithful to us. David’s faith is a great example in the Christian life. We need to be like David!

Hey that was awesome being with you guys at Revival! I really enjoyed it!

50 So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone, and struck the Philistine and killed him. There was no sword in the hand of David.

This is awesome it is great how God keeps prevailing. Anything is possible with God. He didnt even need a sword all he needed was a stone. Its awesome.

  20. 45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied

It is so encouraging to know that David was a man after God’s own heart. He could not stand to see the Lord’s name mocked by Goliath, so David being the young youth, went up against him with all confidence because his faith was in God. It is so motivating to understand how much faith and trust David had in the Lord and that He was faithful to David! It must have not been easy to go up against a giant, but his faith was so strong that he knew God was on his side and that he could defeat Goliath. I want to be more like David and have my faith be strong in the faith as him! He is a really good example of someone who strives to seek out God’s will and who has an obedient heart with serving the Lord! I pray that we could all be like David!

  21. Jasmine says:

28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? And with whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart, for you have come down to see the battle.”

It’s kind of ironic that David’s own brother said that he knew “the evil of David’s heart” when God saw that David was a godly man after His own heart. This totally contrasts to show God’s view and man’s view. Although David didn’t have an evil heart, he didn’t say anything to fight back or act angry. Instead he used a gentle and soft answer in verse 29 “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” This just shows I shouldn’t care about what other people think. Although they might say rude comments it doesn’t really matter because I know that the one who’s opinion really matters is God. Another thing I noticed was that Eliab was probably resentful of David for being anointed king by Samuel. This contrasts to Jonathan (later on in the next chapterss) who unselfishly loved David with all of his soul and wanted the best for Him.

  22. payton :D says:

    What a great chapter!
God used David in such an amazing way. The men hid for Goliath, but David wanted to stick up for God!

32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

David was READY to go. He didn’t need the king’s armor, but rather the LORD. GOd is powerful and can do anything. In the bible it talks about how if our faith is strong and we pray to God we can move mountains!
All things are possible with God! Haha I just though about how strong and big an elephant is and how a lot of people are afraid of them, but the elephant itself is afraid of a mouse. A MOUSE!!! Haha isn’t God funny. He has this huge and mighty creature afraid of this little creature.
For me, I am TERRIFIED! of spiders, yet I could squish them easily without being bit. But there is just something that scares me of them.
God is so great and is the freatest God out there He isn’t afraid and is ruler over all. He can do anything He wants and has all things controlled in the palm of His hand, yet I forget to pray to Him in all things and ask Him to help me in my time of need. All things are possible with God and David knew that. He was a servant of Saul but most of all God! That is why I understand on why God picked David. God saw David’s heart and love toward God. God didn’t care about what David was like on the outside, just his heart. :]

***WHAT A MIGHTY AND GREAT GOD WE SERVE!!!***

  23. Sarah G.! says:

16 For forty days the Philistine came forward and took his stand, morning and evening.

HA this reminds me of Mr. Cox’s class today when he was talking about numbers in the bible!! (yes, i was paying attention.) I thought it was interesting how Goliath proceeded on with his threat for 40 days… because the number 40 is repeated throughout the bible. 40 days it rained, 40 days Jesus went without food and water…God shows us things in interesting ways!!

DAVID was amazing, and showed no fear, knowing that God was on his side!! He had great boldness, and came prepared. This is my desire; to come prepared for the spiritual battle going on each day, like David!! :D

  24. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”

This is quite the amazing chapter!! This is what happens when people decide to go against God, or even trash talk Him! I also really like how David trusted in God and had the courage to stand up to Goliath as well! Both of these points are so important to do! If someone is taking God’s name in vain I really am offended because He has done so much and people should not even be saying bad things like that. Another amazing thing to learn from is David’s trust in God! All of the Israeli army did not want to fight such a scary creature! But David did! He stepped up when no one did, knowing he had God on his side. Whenever I am evangelizing, or in a tough situation, I need to know and remember that God will be there!

  25. angela voris says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

God is always their for us! David is willing to go up against Goliath who i huge, because he knows that he has God on his side. this is just an encouraging chapter to see the faith and trudt that David had in God.

  26. T Moore says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

This verse I really liked because it really made me think about how without God, I would be living a meaningless life. I need to remember every single day that I need God a lot more than He needs me. Also, I need to remember that without God, I would be nothing living a purposeless life. God is sooo great for saving me from my own destruction and I need to remember that daily: that Jesus Christ died on the cross for MY sin and that God deserves nothing less then my entire life given up to serve and live for him. I pray that I would be living unashamed to serve such and wonderful God and I pray that I would stay revived and on fire for God, telling everyone of this wondrous news!
    116 UNASHAMED!!!!

  27. bill says:

36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.”

This is a good verse to look at because it really stresses how one shouldn’t defy God. God strikes down this man, and a similar fate will be in store for those that choose to defy the Lord. God gives his specific commands, an I need to make sure I don’t go against his commands.

  28. Allen McAnlis says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

David never ceased to trust in the LORD. Even though Goliath would have seemed to be able to kill David in one hit, God was with him and he knew that. He trusted in the LORD and struck down Goliath whom had defied God. David knew that if he stood up for God after He was being mocked, that He would protect David. We ought to be like David, quick to stand up for God and to trust in Him with all of our heart.

  29. Jeff Modugno 2010 says:

26 And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

this is such a cool verse. It encourages me to be like Daved and stand up for what I belive in and not let people defy my God. I need to be bold and stand for Christ every day.

  30. Emily Knudsen says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

This verse stood out to me alot becuase it really showed me how truley powerful God is! David fought Goliath will little rocks; and Goliath with a sword. Yet David had something more powerful than anything else in the world; he had God. And God protected David as he does to us. Sometimes i may feel alone and not able to concore the tasks ahead of me. But God will not abandone us, for we are His children and we are never alone. God is always there for us and will always help us in times of need. All you need to do is pray and have faith. And God will provide. :)

  31. Tiffany Chau says:

1 Samuel 17:45 “Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand…”

I love this verse because it shows really how much faith and trust David has in the LORD and this verse encourages me to do the same; to trust in GOD. The LORD delivered David from the giant Goliath. If we trust in God, he can deliver us from all the “giants” or “Goliaths” in our lives as well. It’s so amazing that David could just willingly go out to fight Goliath and know that GOD will keep him safe! God is so amazing!

    • Alicia Karlsson says:

Amen Tiffany! So good to see you on here. I am praying that you will trust the Lord no matter what the circumstance just as David did. See you at small groups tomorrow night!

    • Mady Adler says:

Tifff!!! its awesome to see you on here girll :) Its been great to see you grow in Christ and i want you to know im praying for you! and i totally agree with your post: we need to always be trusting in God the way David had trust in him. Im so happy youre on SOTD and i love youu <3

  32. Bryan Sonksen says:

    I read…

I liked the part of this chapter when David left all of his armor, his sword, and his other heavy fighting equipment in the encampment because of his great trust in the Lord. If I were David, I would be bringing the most weapons as I could to the fight. He had so much trust in God, that he only brought 5 stones and a sling. I need to have this much trust in the Lord throughout my life so that I might grow in my faith.

  33. Riley hancock says:

When god called David to kill the enemias he went to do it and we should be the same be going out and talk to people on the streets and that is a big focus for us.

  34. j. watkins [DANA!] says:

“Saul said to David, ‘You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth. ‘ … And David said, ‘The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine. ‘ ”

David serves as an excellent example to all of us, in the faith we should have in God.

He shows complete faith, and is rewarded by it in the humiliating death of Goliath.

  35. 32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

David’s courage to battle with Goliath is an inspiration in so many ways. I can see certainly that there are several ‘Goliaths’ out there today, who regularly defy the name of our God, and many Christians are afraid to stand up against them. Why be afraid? The Almighty Creator of this universe is on our side and has promised us victory.

I aspire to stand up to those who defy God and refuse to give Him glory. Like David, I want to be bold, “For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give [them] into our hands.”

I’m living to glorify God :)

  36. Shelby Sawyer says:

I loved reading about David and his fearlessness. He trusted in God and defeated Goliath. I love reading about his faith and trust in the Lord. He was willing to die! What a great example David shows us!

  37. Nachooooo says:

33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”

Im so sick of hearing this kind of stuff. People think that since we are young we are not able to do big things. But through God all things are possible. I need to always remember this and not be afraid to ask God for big things.

  38. Jessica K=) says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

I love this verse! From Pastor Bobby’s sermon at Revival last weekend, I remember how no one expected David of all people to defeat a nine-foot giant. David was young but strong. Most importantly, his strength and success came from the Lord. He had extreme faith in God and proved that anything is possible with God! This verse reminds me of how faithful God is. Just as he delivered David from the lion and bear, he also delivered him from Goliath. And so he will be there for me in my times of trouble and distress. I need to have unshakable trust and faith in God like David. David’s example of fighting Goliath also required a ton of courage. This motivates me to be braver and bolder in my faith and realize that I need to stand out from the crowd just as David did. Because with God on my side, I can do awesome things for his glory<3

  39. Haley Litz says:

For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

David completely trusts God to win the battle and give Goliath into his hands to kill!!!! David knows God will save the Israelites and does what God wants him to do! He defends God’s name and wants God to become known to other nations through his battle with the Philistines!!! That is so awesome that David wants people to know of the living God and knows people will know about God because he let David defeat the Philistine, Goliath. I also love how David knows he can defeat Goliath with God’s help and because he served so faithfully and put all his effort into being a shepherd that he killed a lion and bear which prepared him for this fight!!! David’s heart is on giving God all the glory and credit in his life and I want to be the same way!

  40. Amanda Bates says:

47 and that all this assembly may know that the Lord saves not with sword and spear. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

This verse stood out to me the most in this chapter. To me it seems that it is saying that the Lord doesn’t protect us from harm with weapons, but instead will help to set up a plan for the best possibilities for those who are 100% for Him. We have to remember that God is good all the time, and all the time God is good; and glorify in His name. As long as we have a constant perseverance in faith, and are willing to put everything on the line, the Lord will always be there to guide us in the right direction.

  41. christopheriksen says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

David’s love and dependence on God are truly amazing things to see. David had confidence to fight ferocious animals and now a huge giant because he trusted with absolute certainty that God would protect him. This contrasts how I worry all the time if I can get homework done or what not. I pray that I would, like David, truly seek God first and trust that He will then work everything else out and take care of me like it says in Matthew 6:33.

  42. Jenae says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

This is an awesome verse and just shows that God is with us in all things!

51 Then David ran and stood over the Philistine and took his sword and drew it out of its sheath and killed him and cut off his head with it. When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they fled.

These people were so arrogant and then just left!! They knew they were wrong and tried to run away from it!

  43. JWade says:

David did small things to the best of his ability so that when the time came for him to do a HUGE thing for God he was ready. i need to make sure i even eat and drink to the best of my ability for God. so that when the time comes i will di great things by God for God.

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. ELLA says:

32 And David said to Saul, “Let no man’s heart fail because of him. Your servant will go and fight with this Philistine.”

Let no man’s heart fail, wow. I think that means that none should be afraid. In life I know I don’t need to fear anything, and so I try to go on and live like that. I am, though, afraid of God. I am suppossed to, right? God wants to fear him, and love him. He is the one who gave me life, he can surely take it away. I know that when God is with me, which is always, I do not need to fear. Like is Psalms, though I walk thru the valley of death, I shall fear no evil, since God is with me.

  45. Summer Staeb says:

34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth. And if he arose against me, I caught him by his beard and struck him and killed him.

David took his job seriously and always performed it to the very best of his ability whether the task seemed menial or not. Little did he know, that those tasks of tending the sheep and protecting them from predators would give him experience and faith for an even bigger task later on. He knew the Lord had helped him to kill the predators, which gave him the confidence to go out and face the giant. His trust was completely in the Lord! I need to be like David in that every task I am given I work at it with my whole heart as if doing it for the Lord. I know God has and will put situations in my life to test and see if I am faithful in the little things or not. I want to be faithful in those things so that God can use me to do big things! In everything that I do, I want to glorify God!

  46. kelly causky says:

David’s strength comes from God, not his physical ability or his emotions. This is the way we should be also. We need to rely on the Lord and not on ourselves. And pray to our Creator!

  47. Dominic Scarmardo (Dana!) says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

No one messes with my God! David lets Goliath know that although Goliath had all this strength and armor, David could easily take him down with God at his side. God is truly great and powerful!

  48. Alyssa K says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

David’s faith is such a great example to me. He trusted in God without any doubt and despite the low expectations of everyone around him, he knew that with God on his side, anything was possible and therefore he had the high expectation that God would use him to defeat Goliath. I should strive to have as great of faith as David :)

  49. katie baxter says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

I love this verse! Everyone thinks that David is going to get destroyed by Goliath. But he shows up and in the name of the Lord, he totally defeats him. It is so awesome to see his faith in action! He doesn’t even doubt God at all, and it would be so easy for him to especially in his situation! But he boldly stands up for the name of the Lord. This is the kind of faith i want to have!

  50. Jasmine Douglas says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

This is one of my favorite bible stories. I look at it a lot different then I used to when I was a little girl. As I’m reading it now, I’m realizing how big our God is that we serve. He isn’t concerned with our outward appearance. He wants his people to have a heart that is fully committed to him. That’s what is important. David knew God was on his side and he trusted that he would be with him no matter what or who was against him. This story encourages me to put on my armor of God daily and never forget God is with me. We have to be willing to be faithful and do our part as the body of Christ, and God will be faithful with his part, no matter how “scary” some things may seem. Like veggie tales says, “God is bigger than the boogie man” =)

  51. Winter Keith says:

“You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head.]

I think this is an amazing thing that David said because he truly defended Gods glory and understood how powerful God is. This whole story reminds me of the sermon Bobby gave at Winter Revival and i just love David’s enthusiasm to defend God! :) He is definately a great Christian role model! :)

  52. Mike says:

28 Now Eliab his eldest brother heard when he spoke to the men. And Eliab’s anger was kindled against David, and he said, “Why have you come down? …29 And David said, “What have I done now? Was it not but a word?” 30 And he turned away from him toward another…

The way that David handles this situation convicted me. When confronted with the mocking and anger of his brother, David refrained from becoming angry himself. instead, he just turned away and focused on the issue at hand, which was what was to be done with the Philistine who was slandering the name of God. This potential fight between David and his brother is all too common among siblings. When i am in a position where I could argue with my brother – or anyone else, for that matter – I need to remember my witness and the mission that has been given to me. If David had lashed out in anger at Eliab, it would have been that rather than his willingness to fight for God that drew the attention of others. His witness would have been ruined, and he would have missed out on the amazing opportunities God had in store for Him. Likewise, i need to realize that winning an argument is NEVER as important as maintaining Godly character and seeking to glorify Him through every action and thought. Instead of getting distracted by pointless issues, I need to keep my heart focused on Christ and on doing everything in His Name.

  53. Mady Adler says:

This chapter gets me pumped up!!! David is so awesome, but even more than that, God is awesome! He stood behind David all the way, and delivered him from Goliath. If David didnt have God on his side, he definitely would not have made it through a fight with Goliath. Goliath would have torn him to pieces. However, God was on David’s side and because of that, David prevailed and showed God’s power. He had complete trust that God was all powerful and would carry him through. Im sure David knew that physically, he was nothing in compare to Goliath, but he didnt let that scare him at all. He knew that none of that mattered because he had God! I need to trust in God like David does!

  54. Morgan Shermanator says:

The faith of David in this chapter jumps out to me more than anything else. Faith in God comes easy at times when I am doing something small that I know I cannot do alone, but something like this where David was risking his life in front of his whole city took a lot more faith than I’m used to. This definitely brought me back to Revival this weekend when Bobby talked about people using the Lord’s name in vain. 36 Your servant has struck down both lions and bears, and this uncircumcised Philistine shall be like one of them, for he has defied the armies of the living God.” David was so offended at Goliath for insulting his God! That was not cool back then, and I should definitely not tolerate it either. That is the God who saved me being used as a cuss word! Not cool, and I need to stand up and say something.

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” Goinb back to what I said before… David had so much faith in God that he would deliver him thorugh this…and I need to have faith that God will help me through the tough things in life!

  55. Gabriel Voris 2010 says:

46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head…

This verse is so awesome because it just go to show how much confidence David had in the Lord that he would defeat Goliath. He showed no arrogance nor was he confident in himself but he was confident in the Lord. This just shows us such great faith and trust in the Lord. I also like this verse because it shows me that I should fear nothing but the Lord. David did not fear Goliath because he knew that the power of the Lord was on his side. I pray that I would show such confidence in the Lord just a David did.

  56. Kendal Luttinen says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

What a powerful passage that anything is possible with the Lord’s help! David stood up for the Lord and set Goliath straight, while the king of Israel hid in fear. I think that when we stand up for the Lord, we are making an impression on not only the person who we are standing up to, but to observers of the situation. It really says something when you stand up for your beliefs, and it feels good, like standing up for a friend! This just goes to show that material possession have nothing against the Lord’s power, and how much more satisfying is it to have God’s favor than other’s. I would much rather have nothing, but have Jesus Christ, than everything and be empty in spirit.

  57. JK says:

34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock, 35 I went after him and struck him and delivered it out of his mouth.

David here is explaining to Saul why he is qualified to go out and fight Goliath. David was totally faithful in taking care of his dad’s sheep. He did it the right away and took his job very seriously. Which is why he would rescue his sheep from the mouth of lions and bears oh my. It would have been so easy for David to tell his dad ” Hey a bear ate one of your sheep today, sorry nothing I could do about that”. David could have never known that him being a faithful servant would be preparing him to kill a giant named Goliath. We must do everything with excellence, we have no idea what awesome task God could be preparing us for.

  58. This is a great reminder from winter revival. Sorry for those who weren’t there. God wants and loves to see use stand up for him. Knowing that he has our backs is pretty awesome, and I believe we should fo the same thing for him. For God always has a plan for all of us. We can all walk in into battle and come up ontop knowing that we have God over our shoulder. I can’t wait until Revival10. Pray for it to come and to save people. Excited for small groups tomorrow and campus lunches. Good luck to all the guys preaching at thier school.

  59. 3 As he talked with them, behold, the champion, the Philistine of Gath, Goliath by name, came up out of the ranks of the Philistines and spoke the same words as before. And David heard him.
24 All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him and were much afraid.
26 And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

This part of the chapter really stood out to me because we really see the contrast between David and the rest of the Israelites. David heard Goliath and he was bothered by what Goliath said and was ready to take action to stand up for the LORD. However, the Israelites heard Goliath and they were afraid and shrank back in fear of him. I really see how the Israelites are like so many now a days who do not stand up for the LORD and instead apologize or shrink back in fear because of what some one says against God. In contrast David is a great example to us to stand up for Christ and also to be bothered and or offended because of what people are saying about God.
David was offended by Goliath as should we be when non christians bash God or when people christians and non christians take his name in vain. We should not stand by and let these things be said but with courage and confidence we need to stand up against those people and proclaim the truth and to those who profess christianity we should with gentleness and respect rebuke our brother or sister in Christ and prayerfully they will change there ways if they are truly repentant.

David had a high view of God and know one was going to lower that for him. Not even a 9ft giant. Our God is to be honored and feared. Lets be afraid of our God and not be afraid of fools who say there is no God.

  60. David, with the honorable servants heart, loved God with everything he had. God knew this (which is probabally the reason why God wanted him to be king).

Anyways, I loved how, due to David’s high regard for God and faith in Him, He killed Goliath. David is a great example of how we should hold God. We hold Him in the HIGHEST regard just as David did.

  61. BEAST!!!! what is so awesome about this chapter is David’s faith…he heard God’s name being slandered and he was like “I gotta problem with that.” And then he is like oh well if none of you are going to fight this fool than I will because I have faith that I will prevail for God’s glory…In my life I wana take that faith and say hey I am gunna stand up to those people who speak false things and spread the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ…fearlessly because I have faith that God will prevail….

  62. It's Daniel Yo! says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied

This is some legit trash talk. I can’t wait to meet David in heaven. This verse really inspires me to be more bold for Christ. I think a lot of time I/we forget about who we are serving and how He is the most powerful diety in the world. I need to remember that God is in control the next time I feel uneasy about the situation I’m in.

    • Awesome comment Daniel! Reading about David really inspired me too, to go out there and stand up for my God, because there is nothing more powerful than Him, and nothing more perfect or precious!!

  63. Austin Payne: Aliso 2010 says:

33 And Saul said to David, “You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.”

God uses unlikely people throughout the Bible to do extraordinary things. God seems to be a fan of a good underdog story. Remember 1 Timothothy 4:12, remember that we can be used by the Lord just as much as and elder and that God looks at the Heart, not the flesh.

  64. Alison says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

I love how Pastor Bobby said that was the ultimate trash-talking… it is so true! David had confidence and strength in the power of the Lord, not in himself. He would have gotten totally killed if it had not been for God– it doesn’t make sense that an unprepared teenager would conquer the most feared warrior of his time! But I think God often uses the underdog to complete his purposes to show everyone that we should never think ourselves too great. God will use each and every one of us EXACTLY in the way that he wants us!!

  65. Austin Jones says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Its pretty heavy to see how brave David was in calling out Goliath for defying God. In our P.C. society, it’s considered rude to call someone out because of a mistake they did or deliberate defiance. The bible clearly shows us that we can’t let people trash the name of Christ. In my life it’s been one thing that I never enforced that strictly. When people used God’s name in vain, I let it slide. I’m going to do my best to call out my peers when they use omg or Jesus as a swear word. It’s wrong to use God’s name in vain and if we don’tdefend it, then Christ’s rep will not stand! We need to be the disciples we are called to be. Livin’ unashamed all day every day!

  66. Matt Lawler says:

“You are not able to go against this Philistine to fight with him, for you are but a youth, and he has been a man of war from his youth.” 34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father. And when there came a lion, or a bear, and took a lamb from the flock,

Too often teenagers are looked down upon for being children and unable to do anything right. God can do amazing things through anyone who trusts in Him as demonstrated by David, so we have to keep faith and not listen to those who don’t value the abilities of the young.

  67. jordan Anderson says:

26 And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

David had such faith in the Lord that he laid down his life for HIM. This is such an awesome example of a heart that is 100% for the Lord; an undivided heart that is lead by the Lord, and willing to follow to the ends of the earth. I am praying daily that I will have the faith that David did, that i will grow in my sanctification, and in trusting the Lord. I love how David “smack talked” the Philistine, and showed him that he could do anything with God on his side. David was truly bothered and offended when the Philistine defied the Lord, and he did something about it. When i am bothered by the things that people say or do at my school, i need to be going out of my way to say something to them and to stick up for my Lord and Savior who sent his son down to die for a sinner like me! I am so thankful that the Lord has saved me, and i am willing to leave this world behind to follow him wherever he chooses to take me! (:

MARANATHA Lord, i long for you!!

  68. Jackson Dahl says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

All three of these verses show something so important that David had- trust in the Lord. David had such amazing trust in the Lord that he could do all things through the Lord, and that God was in control. I want to be like David and represent my Lord in everything I do, trusting that he’ll get me through every situation I face. I fret and worry over my school work and tests way too much. God is in control in everything, and if he could give David the strength to defeat goliath with a slingshot, my problems are nothing.

    MARANATHA!

  69. Michaela Adler says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you!”

    Amen!!
This just made me think of how everything is possible through God :)
    He is so good!
He won’t let us go into battle unprotected.
    Both physical, and spiritual.
When we resist temptation, do you think we resist it all on our own?
    ABSOLUTELY NOT!
I get ALL my strength from the almighty God :)
He won’t let me fall when I rely on His strength as opposed to my own.
I pray to have more faith that God won’t let me down when I rely on Him.
Lord help me to see Your way is perfect.
Not my will Lord, but Yours be done! :)

  70. Meisha Preston says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

I love how David is angry because Goliath defied God. This is one huge thing I took away from Revival: Winter Edition. I need to get upset when people speak out against God. I need to be upset for God’s sake. God is a jealous God, he deserves all glory and honor but he doesn’t get it. I need to be jealous for God.

  71. Ian H. says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”
46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. And I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel

In addition to all that pastor Bobby preached on this past weekend, this stood out to me: David’s confidence. I’ve heard the phrase “Expect great things from God and attempt great things for God” (or something like that). David did exactly that. His confidence, his trust in the Lord was so great that he was willing to go up against a giant, professional warrior–he himself being a mere shepherd, without any weapons or armor–for God’s glory. Think of the personal risk. . . I’d certainly be afraid. But David’s trust was not blind; he had fought off and survived the attacks of powerful animals before by God’s grace, and he had faith that God would protect him yet again. And, indeed, God not only protected him, but gave him the victory!
Likewise, it is my everyday challenge to trust in the Lord, that He is who He says He is and will do what He says He will do; that’s what it really all comes down to. In fact, when I sin, or disobey His commandments, it’s really because of a lack of trust. When I sin, I’m not trusting that He knows what’s best and gives commands for my good. Lord, please give me a genuine trust–even a confidence–in you, for eternal life through Jesus Christ and for everything less!

  72. Katie Slusher says:

37 And David said, “The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

I love that David gave God all the glory for his victory over the lion and the bear. Rather than claiming that he would be victorious against Goliath because of his own abilities, he proclaims that the Lord would deliver him. In my own pride, sometimes I’ll take the credit for the abilities God has given me. I need to make sure that I am always giving him the glory for what he has done and is continuing to do in my life.

  73. Allie Moorefield (: says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.
DAvid had so much confidence in the Lord. I tend to rely on people a lot and trust in them way too much, when i should put all trust in the Lord. This verse reminds me of Satan and how he is always trying to destroy us, but we must be confident and come in the name of the Lord. It also reminds me of revival when we talked about how we should be bothered when people disrespect our God. David comes and fights in the name of the Lord because they have defied and disrespected his God. As i talked about at small groups tonight, i am going to go out of my comfort zone and tell people when they are offending me because that is rude for them to be use my Lords name as a cuss word and it is offensive! I strive to be more like DAvid in all these ways.

For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”
THis is awesome and reminds me how the battle (life) s the Lords and it is in His hands. I must give my heart and life to the Lord because it is His and he has a plan for my life. There is no reason to worry or stress out about my future because God knows His will for my life! I pray for my future that whatever i do with my life, it will be to glorify you and your name!

  74. Pastor Ben says:

One thing that always stands out to me in this chapter is the contrast between David and Saul. Saul (with the rest of Israel) is afraid and hanging in his tent when he should be out fighting. On the other hand, David is courageous even though he is young and small compared to Goliath.

Fear is something I struggle with on a daily basis, but I need to fight against it with a confidence in the Lord like David had.

  75. josh senger says:

26 And David said to the men who stood by him, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

I love davids enthusiasm for defending the name of God. these Philistines are bassing God and even though the odds are far against him he stands up for the Lord without any hesitationand goes to fight him. i want to have daivd’s amazing enthusiasm to stand up for God in any and all situations no matter what the odds. God is holy and merciful and I owe everythign to Him

  76. Jacob Antoun 2010 says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

This verse has always stood out to me. David has so much faith and confidence that God is going to win the battle that he has absolutely no fear! I want to live my life with the mindset of David, who relied on God to win the battle and get the glory!

  77. colin argue says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

hahaa David just destroyed them. Goliath was good at trash talking Israel and God David though, just owned them with his little trash talk.

  78. Karsten Klein says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the Lord will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head. For the battle is the Lord’s, and he will give you into our hand.”

It is so awesome how David has so much faith in God and trusts that God will help him kill Goliath. David tells saul that God will help him kill Goliath just like God helped him kill a bear and a lion! David’s faith in God gave him no fear because he trusted that God would not let him die when he confronts Goliath for insulting God.

  79. Rebekah Foreman says:

45 Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword and with a spear and with a javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

Anyone can have a sword and spear with a javelin, but no one can come to you like the Lord our God does. He comes with millions of armies behind Him. David trust the Lord and has tremedous faith in Him that he believed Gd was going to lead the army and him into victory.

  80. AUSTIN WILDMAN says:

I love the story of David and Goliath. Because It really is just a show of the faith that David had in God to do the right thing. There are going to be many Goliaths in are lives and we need to strike them down. Maybe there was a Goliath in your life today I know there was one in my life. Was mocking a kids name which was Jesus in spanish and she kept calling him Jesus very loudly and I did not stand up. Today Goliath won and I was like on of Davids brothers. Useally I enjoy standing up for what I believe in wheather it be politics or religion, but today I lacked the strength and feared men more than I feared God. and I think that David understood that. He fear what God might do if he did not strike down Goliath, more than Goliath him self.
