David Anointed King
16:1 The Lord said to Samuel, “How long will you grieve over Saul, since I have rejected him from being king over Israel? Fill your horn with oil, and go. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for myself a king among his sons.” 2 And Samuel said, “How can I go? If Saul hears it, he will kill me.” And the Lord said, “Take a heifer with you and say, ‘I have come to sacrifice to the Lord.’ 3 And invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you shall do. And you shall anoint for me him whom I declare to you.” 4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?” 5 And he said, “Peaceably; I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Consecrate yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.” And he consecrated Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord‘s anointed is before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.” 8 Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 9 Then Jesse made Shammah pass by. And he said, “Neither has the Lord chosen this one.” 10 And Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
David in Saul’s Service
14 Now the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a harmful spirit from the Lord tormented him. 15 And Saul’s servants said to him, “Behold now, a harmful spirit from God is tormenting you. 16 Let our lord now command your servants who are before you to seek out a man who is skillful in playing the lyre, and when the harmful spirit from God is upon you, he will play it, and you will be well.” 17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.” 18 One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him.” 19 Therefore Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me David your son, who is with the sheep.” 20 And Jesse took a donkey laden with bread and a skin of wine and a young goat and sent them by David his son to Saul. 21 And David came to Saul and entered his service. And Saul loved him greatly, and he became his armor-bearer. 22 And Saul sent to Jesse, saying, “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor in my sight.” 23 And whenever the harmful spirit from God was upon Saul, David took the lyre and played it with his hand. So Saul was refreshed and was well, and the harmful spirit departed from him. (ESV)

We should always remember that who we are as a person, and our motives for our actions are truly what matters to God. We can do good actions, but if they are for the wrong reasons, then to God your actions are in vain.
And as Christians, we are striving to reach the level of perfection of God, or ‘godliness’, so we should look at this and realize that we too should use the same level of judgement in our own relationships. So instead of basing our friendships on outward appearances and actions, we should be basing them solely on the person’s heart, like God.
7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
This is a verse that reminded me of one of the Revival Sermons. (which were amazing!) A lot of times we as humans get caught up in ourselves and focus way to much on how we are on the outside than the inside. But like Pastor Bobby said, God doesnt even see our outside; all he sees is our hearts. Which stood out to me so much! And especially being a girl, who are always worrying about makeup, our hair, and clothes. GOD DOES NOT EVEN CARE ABOUT THAT STUFF! Yet we spend so much of our time doing it!!! We need to pray that we will give God more time than our outward appearance. :)

I like how GOD chose the son who no one expected to be king. GOD didn’t chose one of the stronger sons HE chose David who was not strong by appearance but strong by heart. GOD looks on the inside not on the outside. GOD knows what your motivation is and can see through any fake deeds that are supposed to be good. GOD knows everything and sees everything.

when Pastor Bobby talked about this on friday night i was super convicted. sometimes i do the right outward actions, but my heart is not in it. as Pastor Bobby also mentioned, this was one of the things that the nation of israel constantly struggled with. they sacrificed to the Lord, but their hearts were not worshipping God. God knows my motives, though know one else does. 1 Corinthians 4:5 says that when we are judged, our motives will be brought to light. all of the “good things” that i have done halfheartedly will be exposed. i need to keep this verse in mind, as well as 1 Samuel 16:7, and do things for God’s glory, and worship Him with a whole heart. please Lord, help me to be doing the right things, but with the right heart. i pray that You will guide me and search me Lord, and use me for Your glory!

This is one of my favorite verses because as humans it is natural for us to look/judge someone on their outward appearance when God looks at the heart. I don’t want to look at the outward appearance but to see people as God sees them looking to see if they are a guy/girl after His own heart instead of making assumptions based on their apperance. Although Samuel overlooked David, God knew his heart and motives.
Good thing God gives us a new heart that pleases Him!

Amazing chapter! It is so awesome to see what God does! Everything falls into place, even though the people involved may not understand why at the moment. At the beginning, it seems questionable why David was chosen as king and not someone else. I’m sure it seemed really confusing or even not right to them, but we know what good things David does later! But they didn’t know that! When weird or questionable things happen in my life, I need to know that God has a good plan for me!

Just like Pastor Bobby said in his first sermon at Revival this weekend, Christ is telling Samuel not to look at the physical state and appearance of Jesse’s sons, but to seek out their hearts and mental state. Pastor Bobby told us “…don’t worry about the outward appearance…” and to view a person by their heart. We all need to seek out the people who live for Christ in the purest ways possible. We all need to stop our sinful ways when we judge people, put on a front/fake personality, and we need to not worry so much about outer beauty but instead look at the inner beauty within.
Thank you Pastor Bobby so much for the great and encouraging sermons this weekend at Revival, I have really taken them to heart! It was an amazing experience and i am so thankful to have gotten to go and especially to go with the Compass group. I truly feel closer to the Lord. I was also wondering; can you post a list of all the songs that we sing during services and Revival? I want to download them but I don’t know all of the song titles.

This totally what Past Bobby was talking about at winter revival. We all make mistakes and try to cover them with lies and say stuff that we really dint mean. Which reminded me of the sermon that Pastor Bobby saying that God looks at the heart. Also bearing good fruit. Even though we can fool the world and say that no one knows that or no one really knows what I am thinking. There is always one person who really sees past our look and outer apperence that is our one and only God. It scares me that one day I will have faced are God and be judge by them. I hope all of us have hood Christians friends and grow eachother up to glorfy God in the highest.

God doesn’t care what we look like, or how our voices sound, he cares about the attitude of our hearts! He wants hearts that are undivided and 100% for Him. When we have hearts that are sold out for Christ, he will give us things to do for HIS Kingdom. And when we are faithful in those things, He will give us greater things! I want to have a heart that is ALL ABOUT bringing glory to God so that I can make an impact and difference in the Kingdom of God!

This verse shows us just what we learned at revival. How we need to look at our hearts and see if we have new hearts or black hearts that is like a great white shark killing. This is so important are you on God’s team or the devil’s team?

This reminded me of what Bobby said on Saturday.
We can never be to young to fulfill the work of God.
We can do whatever we put our minds to as long as it pleases God.
I pray for an open heart and ears to hear what God is saying to me so I may please Him in everything I do and hear His command with every decision I make.
I pray for my life to be absolutely 100% for God.
Help me to keep the Revival going, Lord!

Pastor Bobby hit it right on the Head. God looks beyond the superficial appearance or the actions that are done by a person, He looks to the straight the center of their heart. God’s X-ray vision is supremely the reason I want to be sincere in everything, something I have often failed to do.
Teach me Lord all of your ways, unite my heart all of my days, to fear your name and walk in truth, for my whole heart I give to you. Lord, keep me from a divided heart, so I would seek to be a man after your own heart, and in all sincerity and truth amen!

It’s all about inward appearance to God and it should be a big deal to us as well. I’m not really the judging by looks type, but I still do it and this pass weekend this convicted me. This verse reminds me of this and this week I am going to focus more on inward appearances.

I don’t really have much more to comment on about this verse beside the fact that God is awesome. This verse gives a great description of someone who has the Lord on their side. My goal is to have a reputation similair to this (although i know i won’t be refferered to as a man of war)

HA i thought it was interesting how in this chapter of 1 Samuel, Saul has a great fondness for David, but in the later chapter (18 i think?) Saul wants to kill David for his son’s place on the throne!! That’s craziness!
God wanted David to be king of Israel…because David truly sought after the Lord daily, unlike the other brothers. I want to seek after the Lord like David did, that I may glorify Him more in everything I do!! :D

I know we have all commented on this verse, but it is so important to take to heart. As Christians, we probably would admit to a small group leader or someone that looks don’t matter. But sometimes we fool ourselves, because that same day we may take an hour to get ready in the morning and our hearts pay more attention to the appearances of others, not their soul. We need to make sure we are not hypocrites and we stand out from the world because we know this body is perishing and our minds are on our new heavenly bodies.

I loved verse 7 from this chapter that Pastor Bobby preached on this weekend, but this verse also stuck out to me. David had a good reputation! He had street cred. Saul wanted someone who could play the lyre for him and a man had seen David and knew about him and knew what he was all about. God saw David’s heart and from his heart actions were shown on the outside.

I liked the last half of verse 7, “…’For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.’”
In this verse, Samuel is choosing the next king over Israel from the children of Jesse. When Samuel passes by the first son he thinks that surely he will be the next king of Israel. But, God reminds him that He does not look for the outward appearance but instead what is inside his heart. We need to apply this when we pick friends as some of the best friends are not necessarily the most athletic or skilled people.

The sermons on this book this weekend were awesome. They totally changed my perspective on doing the little things as best as possible for God. Like how David tended to the sheep, he took it seriously and handled it well so God gave him bigger things to do. I’m definately going to have a new look on school work and other small things.

Physical appearance is of absolute no worth in God’s eyes. I know he is looking stright through to what is in my heart, and he wants ALL of it. Not 80% or 90%, but an absolute sold out heart pursuing after his own. After Pastor Bobby’s message about being after God’s heart, I realized that it truly is so easy to get caught up in physical appearances and good deeds, when really if my heart isn’t in the right place, then it’s no good at all. I want the Lord to have my WHOLE heart! For a tangible goal, I am going to spend as much time reading God’s word or praying as I do getting ready or spending time on myself this week.

This is exactly what Pastor Bobby talked about on friday night! I need to make sure that when i do things, I am doing them all for the Lord, and that my heart is all for him. I shouldn’t be doing them to glorify myself, or any other reason. I want my heart to be one that God calls after his own, like David’s! Now that is a compliment. And the only way that I will achieve this is my making sure my heart is undivided, solely focused on my Lord!

I think being in this world I get so caught up in what the world says people should look like!!! I need to be focusing on the heart like God does!! I need to make sure that I am not looking at peoples outside appearance but their inside!!!!!!!

I loved how Pastor Bobby said that Jesus looks straight through you and sees your soul. I loved that. For some reason I always knew that, but i was had this image in my mind of Jesus looking down on us like a little dollhouse. But all he really sees are our motivations and our aspirations. He knows our hearts. There is no way we can hide from Him. This just inforces my fear of the Lord. it also reminds me that if God is truly my first priority, than my inward appearance will come before my outward appearance. That is something i definately need to work on

Reading this chapter reminded my of Friday night’s sermon. After that sermon I was able to spend some time praying and thinking about ways my own heart needs to become more like the Lord’s. I don’t want to just forget these things now that Revival is over. I want to be pursuing God more and more each day!

Its amazing how God uses the overlooked and cast aways for his glory and honor on this earth. Its so important that we don’t judge people based on their outer appearance, job title, or popularity status. God looks past all of that superficial fluffiness, He looks at the heart and knows our motives for doing what we do. I think we will be very surprised who is great in the kingdom of God when we get to heaven. I need to share the gospel to all people, not just the ones who I think will respond favorably. God knows who is ready for the harvest and I need to trust in that.

This verse is so representative of the world we live in today. It is so easy to judge others based on their outward appearance even though it does not matter. What matters is what is going on in the heart and only the Lord truly knows what is going on in our hearts. I pray that I would not focus on the outward appearance of others. I also pray that I would have an undivided heart. I cannot have my heart set on the Lord and something else. I need to make my main focus to do the will of the Lord and to serve Him.

This is such an awesome verse and is a very important verse..especially for girls! Girls get sooo caught up in how the look and if their hair is okay or there make up is messed up. The truth is, only man cares about those kind of things. So, when i think about it, it is such a waste of time to spend hours getting ready to impress man…instead, you could be spending that time in Gods Word trying to impress God! God doesnt even see your outer appearance, he sees straight to your heart. God eyes are like an x-ray machine. It is so intense in the first sentence because it says the Lord rejects those who focus on their outer appearance and also those who judge people on their appearance! I do not want to be rejected so from now on i am going to look at people from their heart, not their appearance. I will also focus more on the appearance of my heart in Gods eyes rather than my outer appearance in the evil eyes of man!

I need to remember that God is ALWAYS looking at the heart and even though not everyone pays attention to what people look like on the inside, that is what’s most important to God and he is all that matters! Its great to know that God is seeking my heart and he wants it! It makes me feel that God must love me and it gives me more of a reason to live for him with my WHOLE heart!! This sermon also made me realize how thankful I am that God chose me! Out of everything I have done and he wants my heart! I need to be living all of my life for the LORD! I cannot be ashamed of him and I need to let him work in my life. His will is what’s best for me and what I want will not satisfy me! Praying that God is apart of EVERYTHING in my life and my whole heart will be focused on following God.

God wants an undivided heart. He will not settle for anything less than 100%. I can fool people by making my outside look pretty but God sees right through all that and looks straight to my motives and thoughts. I need to remember this and make sure that my heart is 100% devoted to God 100% of the time. Praying Revival will continue down the mountain.

We can’t fool God – he sees the true heart. Best to give up, trust in Him alone and repent. Then He fixes what we can’t and enables us to have a heart that pleases Him. For many people in this world today, the front that they put on is all that they are. They hide behind the mask of who the pretend to be, trying to be the most popular and the most likeable person. They carry themselves around with arrogance, hoping others will look to them and admire them. Yet inside they are empty. Who they truly are within is but a person lost in their pursuit of popularity. And when God was picking who would be king, he looked at the firstborn of Jesse. He was a strong man, the firstborn leader of the family, yet when God examined him, he didn’t find the man that he was after. God wasn’t after a man who was strong or a man who was confident in leadership. As we talked about this weekend, God was after a man who was after his heart. Even though he did find David at that time to take the place of king, the search still continues. God is still seeking out people who are after his heart.
I need to strive to be a person who can be recognized by my pursuit of God’s heart, that when other people look at me, they will know what I’m all about and what really matters to me. I need to not get caught up with appearance and the fakeness put up so other people will base higher opinions of me. Instead, I need to throw it all away, that I live an honest life, being who I am, and letting people see me for who I truly am. Even if that means that they don’t like me as much, that is not what matters. My focus needs to be God’s heart; that is what I am always after. And there will be people who won’t like me, maybe even hate me for who I am, but I they will see me for who I truly am and they will be hating me for doing what I know is right!

The Lord uses people that do not seem great in the eyes of the world like in this verse He uses David who is just a shepherd to do His work! God uses normal people to do the work He has provided for them in His plan. Also people are not always as they appear outwardly it is the heart they have for Christ that is the most important in Gods eyes and should be in ours too!

Samuel did what the Lord commanded, even though he was scared, or just didn’t want to. He was completely afraid of what Saul might do to him if he found out that he was going to anoint David, but he went anyways because he feared the Lord more. He did what the Lord commanded, even partly or all blind!! :O I want my trust to be like Samuels and my fear to be like his as well. Let’s continue the revival even after camp! :) MARANATHA!

If GOD looks only at our heart then we should be extremely careful what our heart looks like to GOD. We should have it filled with love, and faith in HIM. If our hearts are filled with lies and deceit or with hurtful things then we should repent of all of it and our ALMIGHTY GOD will wash it all away. LORD, you are the almighty power!
I tried making an argument like this one time, but I didn’t get a particularly uplifting reply. I hope your thoughts on this subject turns out better than mine did. Continue the good work.
We were given a lot to consider at Revival: Winter Edition. I am appreciating the opportunity and invitation God offers me every day when I take Him up on joining Him in Quiet Time, to sit and reflect on how I can apply all of this to my life. This morning I ask the Lord to expose any duality I have within my heart, and then to purge me of it so that my heart will stand undivided, beating only for Him.
17 So Saul said to his servants, “Provide for me a man who can play well and bring him to me.” 18 One of the young men answered, “Behold, I have seen a son of Jesse the Bethlehemite, who is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence, and the Lord is with him.”
When Saul is searching for a man who is able to praise the Lord through music one of his attendants immediately thinks of David. Even though he was young, David had established his reputation as a talented musician, brave warrior, wise in speech and most importantly a man of God. He lived out the verse 1 Timothy 4:12, “Let no one despise you for your youth, but set the believers an example in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, in purity.” It reminded me of Pastor Bobby’s comment this weekend about the fact that some of the young men and women in the room were already doing great things for the Lord like preaching the gospel at their high schools to dozens of people each week. I am praying that True North would be full of “Davids.” Teenagers who are not wasting their youth doing foolish things, but establishing their reputation as young men and women of the Lord!

This definitely reminds me of the Friday night sermon. We need to be sure that we have undivided hearts. Our actions and our motives need to both be godly. God sees straight through to our thoughts. I want every thought I have to be pleasing to the Lord.
6 When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, “Surely the Lord’s anointed is before him.” 7 But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
11 Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all your sons here?” And he said, “There remains yet the youngest, but behold, he is keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we will not sit down till he comes here.”
These two parts stood out to me the most. First of all, how God does not look at or judge by the outward appearance, but by the heart, who we truly are deep inside. Just like pastor Bobby was talking about this weekend, it doesn’t matter whether you’re basically a “good kid” or a bad one, whether you’ve gone to church all your life or not, or whatever you may have done. All that matters is your heart: either it is deceitful and wicked, or made new by God! It’s also a bit convicting to me personally, because I have a tendency to judge others all the time by their appearance or actions. But God looks at the heart, and I want to do so as well.
Second, it’s striking how often God chooses the lowliest, seemingly weakest people. David was the youngest brother doing the ordinary, everyday, almost mundane job in the family. Like pastor Bobby said, it could probably be compared to taking out the trash or doing homework today. And yet, rather than choosing the biggest, strongest, most handsome man to be king, the Lord chooses David, the youngest brother, not because he was cool or strong on the outside, but because he had a heart after God! Lord, just like David, please let my whole heart be after you!

This is one of my favorite verses because it says that God doesn’t want the jocks or the pretty ones, He wants those that are studley and beautiful on the inside, because those are the ones that will strive to be close to Him and follow His commands! :)

This verse is the one we focused on the first night at Revival Winter Ed., and i find it convicting and comforting. We all spend alot of time during the day(yes guys too) making ourselves seem presentable to the world. Be it through appearance, speech, or how much cool stuff we have. But the Lord doesn’t care about how many cool things you said, or how popular you were, or even how pretty we are. He just cares about our heart, and what’s inside. Which happens to be a great white shark that cannot be contained. Only through the Lord can we serve the Lord. Because without Him sending Jesus to die, my heart of stone wouldn’t be the heart of flesh it is today. The Lord wants me and my heart, He wants you and your heart. I have given Him my heart and every day strive to make it 100% for Him! Who’s with me??

What a wonderful weekend we had! I want God to look at me and be pleased to call me his daughter. Someone that gives him my WHOLE heart, not just part of it. It’s so easy to give God the things that aren’t hard to give up, but do we love him enough to say NO to ALL the things of this world and live for him whole heartedly? That’s my prayer today, that I have an undivided heart, fully living for God every single day, not focused on what people think of me, but focused on God’s view of me.

I like this verse because I know that my heart has passion in whatever I do. I think some people get the wrong impression of me because I always stress myself out too much or I’m a reserved person so people might think I’m stuck up. The Lord knows my heart and I know what I’m showing on the outside is also the same on the inside. I don’t cover things in my heart up, I express myself.

This is a very important verse to think about, and to reflect on. People spend so much time dealing with what they look like on the outside, and work on perfecting that. For many people, all they are really doing is concealing the sinful hearts they possess. I need to make sure that I am focusing more on the condition of my heart, and working on areas in which I sin.

God looks at the inside of us, not what we see. he sees the true us, we cant hide anything from him.

I think God has such an amzing humor. He knows the future and He knows how David will take Saul’s place and how Saul will feel and He places David in the service of Saul in a position that is closest to Saul the most. David, knowing he has found favor in God’s eyes and trusting Him does what He is asked because he knows God has an amazing plan for him.
12 And he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him, for this is he.”
Why is handsomeness so important for a king. Its awesome that the Lord’s plan is finally carried out.

This is such a great verse. GOD does not look at the physical or apparent qualities of a person. He looks at the heart. GOD knows why we do things, and what we do them for. GOD is good and he knows our heart. We need to make our actions and intentions pleasing to GOD.

I love this verse just like so many people! It is so important to look on the inside. It is so sad that now we judge people by hoe they look or appear but we are fooling ourselves if we judge by looks. I know that as Christian it is easy to think that we don’t judge people by appearance but I know every once in a while I will find myself judging others without even getting to know them. I pray that I would work on what is going on in my heart rather than how much time I take to perfect my outer appearance!

It does not matter what we look like to God he choose people by there heart and that makes you a good Christian. It does not matter how strong you are or good looking so we should do everything for God all the way.

Today I am reminded that it doesn’t matter what I look like or what I have done, but what is in my heart. I want to address the issues of my heart and make sure I am seeking after God with my whole heart!

I love this verse, it really stood out to me. God does not care about your physical appearance, he looks straight at your heart! Heart motivation is everything, the attitude it gives is what matters in the actions you do. There is so much application to apply from this verse, and it was such an awesome sermon! I pray that my heart will be on fire and souled out for Christ! I also want to make sure I am not judging others by their appearance! God wants 100% of you, and nothing less. He deserves it all!

David has some serious street cred. His reputation as a man of valor, someone who the Lord is with, travels all the way to the king. I want my reputation to be that of a Godly man, and I want that reputation to travel far and wide so that God receives as much glory as I can bring to Him (He deserves far more than that). I am praying that our revival will carry all the way through to the summer and that TN will gain some major street cred in the OC and beyond!
i love the openess David has in being a servant in this chapter. David did not even hessitate to becoming Sauls servant. David has so much going for him in this chapter; he is skillful in playing, a man of valor, a man of war, prudent in speech, and a man of good presence yet he is open to serving Saul for God. I pray that the Spirit of the Lord will burn like a wild fire in me just like it did for David. That way i will never stop being of fire for God.

God was setting David up to be king from the very beginning. He opened doors so that David would get to know how the kingdom and how to rule. The boy who should never have even been in the presence of the king became the king’s armor-bearer and eventually the king himself. David was faithful in the LITTLE things, so God kept giving him more and more. This makes me think about how God is opening doors for me and preparing me to do exactly what he needs me to do. Now its my job to be faithful with what he has given me!!

Such a great example of how God wants us to view others. We need to look past outward (earthly) beauty and we need to get to know where their heat lies and how they desire to live a life for God because God doesn’t see us by how high classed or pretty we are he looks directly to the heart

What I noticed is that David was just doing his job. He wasn’t trying to get ready to be a king and wasn’t the best candidate by worldly standards; He simply did the job that God had given him…and he did it well. David wasn’t a slacker, he protected the flock no matter what, wether it be a bear or a lion he fought it off, and obviously he did it with the right heart because God choose Him to be king. This makes me want to excel in what I do and have the right attitude. Luke 16:10 is sooo true!

This is a convicting verse. We tend to always judge people by the way the look and their social standings. It’s amazing to see that God does not care about ANYTHING other than the contents of your heart. For me, I need apply this verse to the message for finding Christian friends. I need to look deeper than what they put on for everyone to see, and look at their true character, their heart. How awesome is our God!!!

We learned a lot about this verse this weekend but I just wanted to say how it convicted me. It hit home with me when Bobby said that when I am standing before the throne of God he will not see what everyone else sees about me, but he will see right through me and straight to the motives of my heart. Everyone sees the things I do and say, but only God knows what is going on inside of me. That’s a scary thought knowing that he won’t even look at those things! I can consider my “spiritual resume” thrown in the trash. This weekend was so convicing to me, because I found some things that divided me heart, even if its only a little. I learned that I owe it all to God, and nothing less.

this verse is such a great reminder of what is really important in God’s eyes. it was so convicting when Bobby spoke about this at Revival, sometimes alot of the things we do, we do to please people around us. if we are not of this world, then it doesn not make sense to do things for the satisfaction of people around us. i need to make sure my heart is not hardened and that i ahve a clear conscious before the Lord, because that is what he cares about, not the way we look or act on the outside.
13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers. And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
its really cool how God chose David! He was a shepherd who was pretty much nothing in comparison to his older brothers physically, but God saw past that. God saw David’s heart and knew that David loved Him. It didnt matter how strong or tall or good looking David was because God wanted the king of Israel to be someone who’s heart was after His own. I need to always make sure I am spending more time preparing my heart towards God rather than getting ready physically. God doesnt care what I look lke on the outside and I need to remember that he only cares about what my heart is like. Lord help me to have a pure heart!!

As Bobby talked about in his sermon at Revival, we need to look past the physical appearance. Especially in Orange Country people get so caught up in looks, yet it is the interior that matters. Recently I’ve tried to strategize my thoughts about choosing friends because “that person is an awesome Christian” or because I know they have a great personality, not because they simply look good & I want to know them. This also reminds me of Proverbs 18:24 from Bobby’s sermon on friends: “A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” It’s important to remember to always value the character of friends, not their social status. I would rather have 1 faithful, trustworthy friend I love than a whole group of friends who stab me in the back. (like a popular guy n a movie once said, “i can be in a sea of people and still feel so alone..”). I will definitely be looking at people’s hearts this week and seeking stronger relationships with Christian friends :)
4 Samuel did what the Lord commanded and came to Bethlehem. The elders of the city came to meet him trembling and said, “Do you come peaceably?”
The elders knew the potency of God’s Word and the power of His Judgement, and so they were eager to ensure that they were in good standing with God. Sadly, this attitude has been mostly lost today. When most people read the Bible, they take it much too lightly, treating it as a checkoff list rather than something serious and useful. But more importantly than that, people – myself included – have the tendency to approach God (be it in prayer, meditation on His Scripture, or in worship) without properly preparing their hearts. Just as the Israelite elders knew the seriousness of the appearance of a prophet, so I need to recognize the seriousness of my ability to come before the Lord. And in accordance, I need to make sure that I set aside all distractions and focus my heart on God and on His attributes and the things that he has done for me.

After reading all of the comments on this verse, it looks like I need to go to itunes and listen to the revival sermons….anyways…it is the inside that matters to God…we see this everywhere…not just in the people God chooses to be king but even in things like sin….where we hear that if we hate our brother we have already killed him in our heart… there are deeper things going on than what we can see on the surface…I want to be aware of those things and work to please God in my heart.

I love that when Samuel came to anoint the future king from the house of Jesse, David wasn’t even invited! In man’s opinion, David did not fit the description of the next king of Israel. However, the Lord saw that David’s heart was fully committed to the Him and used David for mighty things. Whatever mans opinion of my abilities, I need to be faithful to bring God the glory. I need to remember that his ways and plans are perfect!

Like you all said God looks at the heart and wants it undivided! Revival Winter Edition was a great reminder of this! I need to internalize this truth and live this out. God cares about my heart! The perfect and holy Creator looks at my heart which is prone to sin. I need to guard it from sin and fight the temptations I in my life. This is my prayer
Psalm 139:23-24
23 Search me, O God, and know my heart!
Try me and know my thoughts!
24 And see if there be any grievous way in me,
and lead me in the way everlasting!
And the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon David from that day forward. And Samuel rose up and went to Ramah.
Once again we see the Spirit of God ascending on people for a certain purpose in the Old Testament. I am so grateful that when Jesus was taken to heaven he left with us his spirit, and the wisdom and power that only certain people got in the old testament we now have access to at any moment. Thank you Lord for sending us your spirit of truth to teach us and guide us everyday and that because of Christ we are now heirs to all that is his.

When I read this verse I thought about the relationship between David and Jonathan. The Lord does not look at mans external body but on his whole heart (mind). Jonathan was attracted to David’s heart and character not on his external appearance o stature. I love how God uses people who do not fit the worlds profile to do his great works and bring him greater Glory. We can’t afford to look for friends who fit the worlds profile because this can only lead to a superficial relationship void of God’s love. I pray that I will chose friends not on looks and charm like the world, but that I will chose friends who are of like mind in Christ. We need to surround ourselves with David’s and Jonathan’s so that God may use us to disciple and protect others in the faith. I pray that we will be committed to loving others with a Christ like heart serving our fellow brothers and sisters before our own needs and desires.
1 Peter 3:3-4 3 Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear— 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious.
“I have provided for myself a king”
God receives the credit! We may be tempted to lift up men, perhaps even ourselves sometimes, and praise only the man rather than the God who provides the man. This removes room for pride and directs our worship to God alone. Praise God for providing David to Israel, and praise God for the many godly people He has provided for himself at Compass Bible Church.

We should know that God doesn’t look at the good deeds that we do but whats in our heart and how we acttually think about him and if we have repented.
