Saul Anointed King
10:1 Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage. 2 When you depart from me today, you will meet two men by Rachel’s tomb in the territory of Benjamin at Zelzah, and they will say to you, ‘The donkeys that you went to seek are found, and now your father has ceased to care about the donkeys and is anxious about you, saying, “What shall I do about my son?”’ 3 Then you shall go on from there farther and come to the oak of Tabor. Three men going up to God at Bethel will meet you there, one carrying three young goats, another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a skin of wine. 4 And they will greet you and give you two loaves of bread, which you shall accept from their hand. 5 After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying. 6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. 7 Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you. 8 Then go down before me to Gilgal. And behold, I am coming to you to offer burnt offerings and to sacrifice peace offerings. Seven days you shall wait, until I come to you and show you what you shall do.”
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. 10 When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?” 12 And a man of the place answered, “And who is their father?” Therefore it became a proverb, “Is Saul also among the prophets?” 13 When he had finished prophesying, he came to the high place.
14 Saul’s uncle said to him and to his servant, “Where did you go?” And he said, “To seek the donkeys. And when we saw they were not to be found, we went to Samuel.” 15 And Saul’s uncle said, “Please tell me what Samuel said to you.” 16 And Saul said to his uncle, “He told us plainly that the donkeys had been found.” But about the matter of the kingdom, of which Samuel had spoken, he did not tell him anything.
Saul Proclaimed King
17 Now Samuel called the people together to the Lord at Mizpah. 18 And he said to the people of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ 19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
20 Then Samuel brought all the tribes of Israel near, and the tribe of Benjamin was taken by lot. 21 He brought the tribe of Benjamin near by its clans, and the clan of the Matrites was taken by lot; and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.” 23 Then they ran and took him from there. And when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward. 24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, “Long live the king!”
25 Then Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the kingship, and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home. 26 Saul also went to his home at Gibeah, and with him went men of valor whose hearts God had touched. 27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace. (ESV)

9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart.
When God gave Saul the role of being king, he also gave him the heart to do it. The heart is really the theme of the book of 1 Samuel. God is looking into the hearts of men to see who is true to him. Unfortunately, we will read how Saul’s heart did not really go after God’s. This is why God sought out David to be king instead. Right now he is looking in my heart and I need to make sure that he likes what he sees. What is God seeing in your heart today? Let’s pray that God will revive all of us as we get After God’s Heart at Revival: Winter Edition next weekend!
PRAY FOR REVIVAL EVERY DAY!
Now that’s a gift worth… everything! PRICELESS! And for those who hear the gospel and turn in trust to God -it’s paid for and cannot be taken away! Thank You Lord for new hearts! Now what do You want me to do today? Please find me ready when you come and come soon!
im praying!! its gonna be awesome!
I love my Grandma very much–I call her Miss Mug. This little lady has had two major heart surgeries, and she has been properly counseled and advised by medical experts AND her loved ones that eating a stick of butter a week and continuing in her same eating choices would be a bad thing, and surely kill her. But she STILL eats like a FIEND! It’s remarkable to me. It’s so easy for me to see from the outside looking in on her that her short-sighted thinking to indulge in what tastes and seems good NOW outweighs the risk of a third bypass and all the pain and suffering that comes with it, and even perhaps death.
This morning it dawns on me, as I consider this passage of Scripture, that I am just like Miss Mug in some ways. This morning I pray for God to convict me when the smallest, seemingly harmless self-indulgent thoughts creep in and start to take root in the soil of my heart. May I celebrate the new heart that He offers, and may I receive the new heart He’s given me by choocing obedience and yielding to His prognosis for eternal life.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses…
A lot if times we don’t recognize God during times of worry or hardship. Instead, we try to handle it on our own. I resolve to not stress and not be worried because I know that the Creator of the Universe has everything under control.
Yes!
encouraging!!!
10 When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
When Saul was given the Holy Spirit it was evident to all around him that he had a new heart. What stood out to me is that I was given the Holy Spirit at my conversion and I now have a new heart. Is that evident to everyone around me? The way that I live my life as a Christian, my words, actions and attitudes should shout to all those who are around me that I am not the same Beth Lauder I was before I was a Christian. This morning I am praying that there would be clear evidence in all areas of my life that I am a disciple of Christ. 2 Corinthians 5:17 comes to mind, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”
ELLO… I read
I like verse 27,”But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.”
I like this verse because it talks about Saul not caring what people think. They despised him and yet he held his peace because GOD was with him. I need to be like this even though I don’t care what people think of me on the outside I usually care on the inside I need to make sure I care more about GOD then I do of others opinions of me.
CYA
7) Nowwhen these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
I just thought this was a strong quote for you know when your actions are with God you have made a connection.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
It is sad to see how God had raised Moses up to lead the Israelites out of Egypt. And God provided for them during the exodus, and continued to do so in their travels. He lead them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night. He sent manna from the sky to feed them, and when they grew ungrateful of that, he sent down turkey. He led them to take down armies and cities, such as that of the fortress of Jericho. And after the people than wanted to have a king instead of solely having God as their leader. And even though Saul was anointed king, and the likes of David and Solomon who followed after him, no godly or righteous man can lead better than the perfectly holy and sovereign LORD. And so, no matter what earthly powers are in control, God needs to always be the number one authority. This is no excuse to disrespect the government and not listen to the things that they say or the laws that they make. It is still very important to abide by the laws, even praying for the leaders of the country, but God always needs to be the number one priority. In my life, I need to always look to God as the head, the ruler over all I do. He has placed others in my life, and I must obey them, too, as long as obeying them doesn’t disobey something that God says to do. God needs to always be what leads my life, never turning to myself or a worldly thing to guide me fully!
24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, “Long live the king!”
God chose the perfect guy to be the people’s king. (meaning God made the best choice, not that the guy was perfect like Christ). As our Creator, he knows what is best for us and what choices we should make. I know there’s the common phrase “make good choices!” but recently when I’m caught in the middle of a decision, I try to think “make the Godly choice”, because one option may be “good” for several reasons, yet few choices are Godly. Right now I am so happy that I made the choice to go on Winter Revival, and I am so excited to see all that God has in store for me on the trip!
That’s so great. I didn’t really think about that. I’m going to strive to make godly decisions with Him! I’m excited that you’re going to Revival too!
Good Morning!!!
Verse 10
“When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them.”
What a great day that young man had. I mean could you imagine if you were meant to be the king of Israel! GOD let Saul be completely filled with the HOLY SPIRIT. He got to prophesy to the LORD and receive so many gifts from above. This shows to me that GOD really can do anything, HE can find and polish a diamond in the rough. HE is GOD!
Great post! Your consistency on SOTD is awesome 8-D
Goreat job setting an example and living out (1 Tim. 4:12)!
Then Samuel took a flask of oil and poured it on his head and kissed him and said, “Has not the Lord anointed you to be prince over his people Israel? And you shall reign over the people of the Lord and you will save them from the hand of their surrounding enemies. And this shall be the sign to you that the Lord has anointed you to be prince over his heritage.
How amazed must have Saul been to hear that although obviously he thinks so little of himself that he has been chosen to be king. I wonder since God knew what kind of king Saul would become that he chose Saul to teach a lesson to the people.
SO Saul becomes king…exciting for most, but look at how some reacted:27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
Some people despised the fact that he was to become king. He recieved persecution because these people didn’t really trust him…BUT he held his peace. It reminds me of how I should be when I recieve persecution from others who are as liberal as heck and who do not have the Lord by their side. It is something I do recieve daily..and sometimes it does get me down just because I know they need God and I know where they are going if they don’t repent and put their faith in Christ…but when they make fun of me, I should still have peace. In trials, I shall have joy because God places them there for a reason so that I may grow stronger in my faith. IIII think that’s in James…
May the persecution come! MARANATHA!
27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
This is almost sad. The people just asked for a king, and as soon as they got one, some people already started complaining. They should have listened to Samuel when he said that they betrayed God. I guess they deserve it when Saul eventually becomes a bad king. God is the only perfect ruler, they should have let Him stay that way! It’s a good lesson to learn.
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart.
Pastor Bobby said it well. Saul had been given a new heart to enable him to serve as a king over God’s chosen people.
Interestingly, in the same way we have been given a new heart (mind) in return for our old heart of stone. I sometimes forget this. Why do Christians have the ability to seek after God with their whole heart? Because they have had a heart transplant, a transformation of the mind, a ‘rebirth’, a (spiritual) baptism from death to life, a change in occupation from a slave to sin to a slave to righteousness, a ’180 degree’ turn, or in other words a Revival.
I’m praying for more and more people to experience this Revival, to become Christians, and follow him. I’m really excited for Revival Winter Edition! Praise God!
27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present.
The Israelites had just rejected God as their leader and demanded a human king. And when they finally got one, some of them still weren’t satisfied, choosing rather a life of bitterness and discontentment. Sadly, many people today are the same way. No matter what God does for them, it’s never enough. They keep “wanting more,” though they never really know what they’re looking for. They just choose to not be content with God’s provision. THis kind of bitterness can be easy to fall into, but it must be avoided at all costs. Life may not always be happy-go-lucky and easy, but no matter what circumstances I find myself in, I can always find joy in the Lord and in His Word.
Everything that God said through saul’s mother came true only God can do that. I am greatfull to know God and trust in him with may whole heart and nothing could change that.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
God has done SOOO many great things! Yet over and over again they turn away! Boom their with God and the next moment its back to idols. God is creator of all and is the ONE and ONLY true God! Glory to GOd for He is just and loving and is the King of kings! :]
6 MORE DAYS!!! Til REVIVAL WINTER EDITION!!! Yippie! :]
***SEEK THE LORD!!!***
5 After that you shall come to Gibeath-elohim, where there is a garrison of the Philistines. And there, as soon as you come to the city, you will meet a group of prophets coming down from the high place with harp, tambourine, flute, and lyre before them, prophesying.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
I remember watching this scene in Bible Lit. Samuel had to have so much courage when he said this. Telling people they rejected God. They also had a big celebration for King Saul they had like people playing those instruments while dancing. It reminded my of Jesus walking through the streets. It was pretty cool to see that the celebration they have.
27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
Saul seems like such a different person in here. Even though other people despised him and talked behind his back, he didn’t do anything about it- he held his peace and didn’t seek revenge. God gave him a new heart in this instance he was a peacemaker. Sadly later on he changes to be a completely different person. Sometimes when people say things to/about me, my flesh wants to say something back but I know that I have to hold my peace and leave it up to God.
27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
Saul had barely even become King, and he was already being persecuted. However, he did not get angry or let it affect him. Similarly, when I am persecuted for my faith, I need to show this same peace of heart that Saul had. Not getting angry, but trusting that God is in control, and even showing the love of God to my persecutors. Even though Saul ended up turning away from God’s will later in his life, he still demonstrates trust in God at this point, demonstrating how I need to be when I go through struggles!
MARANATHA!!!!!!
27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
I like how saul held his peace with the men that did not belive in him or like him. I need to be like saul and peaceful and not be quick to anger.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses…
I really like what Kelly had to say about this! It is so true that sometimes during hardships I fail to realize that God has a plan for everything! I want to trust that the Lord is working in every situation.
27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
This verse reminded me of the present. Back then it was Saul who some rejected plus God. But today it is mostly God. Infact reality is alot of people reject God. And God has called us christians to stand up for what is right! To tell others of the good news, that there truley is a God, and a way to heaven. But we must also watch ourselves. Because at times we slip, and its up to us to get up again. We need to continue to be examples to others. Because if someone wonders what being a christian is like they need to be able to see what its really like. And maybe they will see the happiness and gratefullness in our lives, and perhaps become a true christian too!
When I was reading this chapter, I kept thinking how awesome it was that Samuel knew all of those this that would happen to Saul. He foretold three events that would happen and they all occured. Yet when the time came for Saul to be revealed as the new king to the people, he could not be found. I think that Saul wasn’t very sure of himself and did not completely trust that he really was God’s chosen king. We as Christians need to make sure that we are trusting God so that he can use us all to our full potential and benefit everyone around us.
22 So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”
Every time I read this I think it’s funny. Saul hid himself among the baggage so he wouldn’t have to deal with becoming king. I can totally understand the desire to hide when something scary presents itself. Today I want to try to respond with boldness when God clearly shows me a way He wants me to serve Him. I don’t want to run and hide when God’s will is for me to step up and trust Him.
But he held his peace
This verse is great. I think that it is funny that people from europe many years later think they’re all great because they came up with the idea of a ruler that is bound by the laws, when the basis from that is right here. It is so great what GOD does.
6 Then the Spirit of the Lord will rush upon you, and you will prophesy with them and be turned into another man. 7 Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
The transformation of Saul is so neat to read about. God changed Saul and used him for His purpose. I need to let God continually improve my heart so I can do great things for Him. Everything I say and do should show that the Holy Spirit is within me. This verse also reminds me that “God is with you.” That’s what I love–that with God, you’re never alone. God works in miraculous ways and the story of Saul is such an encouragement
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses…
This is scary to picture. The Lord has paid it all and died on the cross so we could be right with him! Rejecting the Lord would be horrible and it is sad to know that there are many people who know the truth, yet they still reject God. Only through him is there salvation, nothing else. I want to live my life thanking God continually for what he has done and what he continues to do in my life. as 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 says, “Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” There is so much to be thankful for and I realize and know how blessed I am for what Christ has done. I pray that I will live in obedience to God and never have a heart that is disobedient to his word or truth!
I read…
Verse 19… “‘But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.’”
In this verse, Samuel was telling this Israelites that they had sinned against God by rejecting Him in asking for a king. We need to be admonishers like Samuel, willing to confront others for their sins.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses…
Reading this verse made me realize that I need to make sure I am not rejecting God!!!!! I need to realize that God saved me and the only reason I live today is because of him!!!!!!! I am excited for church tonight!!!!
MARANATHA
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses…
I think this verse is pretty encouraging. I know i need to focus on what God does for me and be certain that he is number ONE in my life!! He has done so much to give us eternal life and in return i believe we should certainly not reject him! We is awesome and i am so thankful to be one of his children!!
11 And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish?
Bam. Right there. This made me think about the way people look at me at the way I live my life. Before I was saved i was part of the world, but after I gave my life to the Lord, there was a change in my life and the more I matured, the more evident that was. My prayer today is that I continue to grow in God’s word and shine my light for him. We are supposed to be set apart and people should be able to see a difference in us!
24 And Samuel said to all the people, “Do you see him whom the Lord has chosen? There is none like him among all the people.” And all the people shouted, “Long live the king!”
The people were amazed by the new King they loved Him and He was the perfect match for the empire. The Lord gave the perfect King to the perfect for there was no one like Him anywhere. God knows what is perfect for us and give us nothing but the best. Thank you Lord.
21 …and Saul the son of Kish was taken by lot. But when they sought him, he could not be found. 22 So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”
This moment reminds me of Jonah trying to run away from God. Saul hides in the baggage, revealing that he is afraid to step up to the plate. Saul’s fear also shows that he doesn’t truly trust God’s judgment. Often our own fears of what God asks us to do can reveal that we’re not fully putting our faith in God’s wisdom and strength. I need to not turn to myself when I’m facing intimidating situations, but rely on the Lord instead. As most of us at TN finish up our exams and begin a new semester at school, I hope we’ll all step up to the plate and represent God boldly on our campuses, trusting that God will be there with us at every moment. I pray that none of us will hide in the baggage when a critical moment arrives.
Can’t wait to bring heat to the snow!!!! Revival is just a few days away!!!!!
We can see here how clearly it is how people forsake God after all that He has done. Not just during this time of the first king of Israel but even still today we all have taken God’s blessings for granted. At times we are not always content with what God has given us and we want more. We need to know that God does have a plan for us and that we do not need anything other than what God has provided for us. He knows our needs and He is merciful to tend to them for us. He will not forsake us and He will watch over us for all of our lives if we trust in Him and have faith.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
As I read this chapter and came upon this verse, my first thought was “Wow, how could you reject God and want a human king??” But then I examined my life, I do this WAY too much!! It’s easy to read the Bible and learn about the Israelites and point out all the things the did wrong, but what about our own lives? I know I definitely need to start thinking about MY life when I read these kind of chapters, when I read the Bible in general! Lord, forgive me for rejecting you in my hard times, or in my great times, You are all I need and You are the One that gives me everything! Let me know and be at perfect peace that You are my King and that You are always in control…Let me submit to you with a willing heart.
Maranatha!!!!
Likin’ some of the comments of the last verse! (and it oddly reminds me of someone in the new testament, too.)
I’m actually quite surprised at God’s response to them rejecting him and wanting a King. Normally in the O.T., they wouldn’t have another opportunity to reject him again! But here he acknowledges their desires and appoints a king to them.
I’m totally feeling you Pastor Bobby!!! I saw that this chapter was about Saul and immediately though BAD GUY. After hearing tonights sermon about honoring everyone but more specifically the LAW, I realized that I judged Saul and didnt have the sympathetic and loving heart I should have. Saul never had the right heart for Jesus. That encourages me to look into my own heart and make sure I have street cred and honesty in my spiritual growth. I’m praying that Revival keeps me in check with spiritual growth and gets me more excited for serving God on a 24-hour basis!!! Praying for a Revival!!!

REVIVAL: Winter Edition is less than one week away!!!!!!!!!! Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I liked the beggining of the chapter because of all the prophecy that is in it. it is cool to see how detailed they were to saul and shows how awesome Gods is. He knows everything down to the hairs on our heads and I think it is really cool that God has everything in my life planned. I dont have to worry about any situation I am in because God is always with me.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
so many people these days just completely reject god and are lost in the world of sin. God saves us from anything and if we turn our life to him we will be out of sin and be standing before god
22 So they inquired again of the Lord, “Is there a man still to come?” and the Lord said, “Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.”
This verse stood out to me. As we continue reading we are going to see how Saul was a fearful and weak king, but I have never noticed how he struggled with this from the beginning.
God wants us to be bold and courageous for him! When it comes time to step it up for the Lord, I do not want to be hiding!
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
I thunk that this verse is showing us how we can put things before Christ and we demand more proof from Him because He is not good enough. God is perfect and we need nothing more than Him in our lives and we need to make sure we are puting nothing in front of Him in our lives.
The prophecy that was fulfilled totally caught my attention in this chapter. God knew and told Samuel what was going to happen…and it actually happened. Sometimes, I read fulfilled prophecy and think wow that is neat and move on. I do not let it sink in, how ONLY God is all-knowing and that through fulfilled prophecy He is revealing His character to us. This is something that as a human I do not have the ability to do and thus shows the supremacy of God.
25 Then Samuel told the people the rights and duties of the kingship, and he wrote them in a book and laid it up before the Lord. Then Samuel sent all the people away, each one to his home.
This versed stood out to me because it reminded me about Pastor Ben service tonight. It reminds me of the laws we have to follow here on earth. How that we should obey them because they matter to us. Also we should obey them because God says it matters. We should want to obey it to honor God in the highest. God has given us the most precios gift of; that is giving us his one and only son to die for our sins. John 3:16.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
God rescued the isrealites from the egiptians, but because the people wanted to be like all the other nations, they didnt want God to rule them, they wanted a king
c u all later
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart.
God is concerned about our hearts. We can totally conform our actions externally to seem right, but he knows what is really going on inside and if we truly seek him or not. I like how Bobby said that God gave Saul the heart to do what he had called him to. I am so grateful that God gave me a new heart when he saved me! My prayer is that my heart would be whole and clean before the Lord and I want to continually keep it revived in his Word and by living to obey him!
When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day.
When God speaks things happen. In the same way that God spoke through Samuel. He has also spoken through the authors of the Bible. And thats why we can know that the Bible is true and trustworthy. God inspired every Word and we can count on all of the promises we read to come true. I am excited about the promise of Jesus Christ coming back. Maranatha!!
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’
Wow, even though God had saved the Israelites from all of their problems, they still rejected him and wanted to be like the world and have an earthly king. The Israelites did not trust the Lord at all. I’m praying that I wouldn’t give into the temptation of being like this world, but always keep my mind focused on Jesus!
27 But some worthless fellows said, “How can this man save us?” And they despised him and brought him no present. But he held his peace.
I like that Samuel didn’t let others negativity and rudeness affect him! Like Ben said to do in his sermon tonight, Samuel didn’t disrespect those who disrespected him- he took the high road! And that is the road that is narrow and hard but represents Jesus in the very best way! I’m praying God will guide me on that same narrow path!
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
It is surprising to see that the Israelites wanted an actual person to rule over them wrather than God!! After all the things the Almighty God did for them it seems like they would get that He should be the only one to rule over them!! Then again it is not surprising because the ignorance that is in all of us was taking over them right there!!! They wanted someone they could see and talk to to be their King rather than God!!!
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart
As God gave Samuel a new heart to serve as king to please God, He has given us new hearts as well. Even though we’re not kings, we still have a very important job, to spread His Gospel. That is the greatest gift someone can recieve and we’re it’s deliverers, to serve God
It is so cool to see the power of God! Everything that was said was going to happen happened. God has all authority and there is no one like him. I need to praise him because of this, and know that he has a plan for my life. I need to let go of what I want and trust in the will of the Lord, because of his power!
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.
By asking for a king the Israelites were rejecting God as their king. They wanted to be like the world. All the nations around them had kings so they wanted a king as well. But they were unwilling to wait until God gave them the right king. They wanted a king now. So God gave them Saul. In this verse it points out that it is God that saves them from calamities and distress…not a king. A king can do nothing unless God gives him the power. I need to remember this as well. I can do nothing on my one and when I rely on myself I am really rejecting God. God is the only one with true power and I need to go to him for help in all things.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”—It is still hard to believe that the Israelites still rejected God as their king even after he saved them from so much! When things like that happen in my life I usually realize how great God is and he truly loves me and he is always going to protect me! However, I need to watch some of the things that might be distracting from God or that can be taking over my life. I need to make God my focus and everything I follow. He needs to be my number one authority and the one that I go to before anyone else. God is so amazinggg!1
MARANATHA!!!
18 And he said to the people of Israel, “Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I brought up Israel out of Egypt, and I delivered you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.’ 19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’
It’s sad how so many people turn their backs on God after all that he does for us. there is no way that doing so won’t ignite God’s anger. He died for us, but every time that we sin, we are saying that we don’t care what he went through. This is a very good reminder for me whenever I’m tempted to sin. Reminding myself of what I would be saying to God would definitely make me steer me away from sinning.
1 Samuel 10
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day. 10 When they came to Gibeah, behold, a group of prophets met him, and the Spirit of God rushed upon him, and he prophesied among them. 11 And when all who knew him previously saw how he prophesied with the prophets, the people said to one another, “What has come over the son of Kish? Is Saul also among the prophets?”
In verses 10-11 we see what street cred looks like. It is by Saul’s words and actions that others believe that he is sent by God. How powerful was it when those who knew Saul saw him prophesying among the other prophets. God used this to prepare the hearts of the people of Israel to accept him as their king. God uses us in the same way to shine His Glory to others. What goes thru the mind of someone who used to know you before you were a Christian and now to see you at school or at the Town Center sharing the Gospel to complete strangers? Or when we were slaves to sin and now are victorious over that sin and doing what is right and just. That is the same power of God that we see throughout scripture.
Lord thank you for changed hearts and the hearts of whom you will change.
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart.
Wow, this was a great reminder for me….just reading this gave me a chill, that God has the ability to change hearts! And always for good. His plan is perfect and can NEVER go wrong! Out God is so powerful and I think so often we forget how powerful and mighty He truly is! It really is amazing to see how great and might of a God we have!
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
Wow the beginning of the verse is pretty sad! But it’s true. People don’t even acknowledge God, or even thank Him for all the good things He does! It also goes into giving thanks too. I need to make that my priority, in that whenever an event happens, I need to be thanking God for what He does because He deserves it!
SORRY I AM POSTING SO LATE!!!
7 Now when these signs meet you, do what your hand finds to do, for God is with you.
19 But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, ‘Set a king over us.’ Now therefore present yourselves before the Lord by your tribes and by your thousands.”
These were the two verses that stood out to me in this chapter! I love verse 7…in life i need to do what my hand finds to do because the Holy Spirit lives inside of me and he will guide me and tell me exactly what to do and how to do it! The last 5 words of that verse are great (: …for God is with you…LOVE IT (:
I especially love verse 19…everyday i reject my God. That is really sad and stupid of me to continue living in sin when i know it is wrong! Every sin i make, offends and rejects God. Because of this, i must present myself in front of the Lord and have street cred. NO HYPOCRISY (:
9 When he turned his back to leave Samuel, God gave him another heart. And all these signs came to pass that day.
Really likes this verse because Saul had the morale to be king, but God gave him a heart that would follow him, which is what I think everyone needs more than anything
I love doing things for the glory of God .
