1 Peter 5

Shepherd the Flock of God

5:1 So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you. 11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Final Greetings

12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it. 13 She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. 14 Greet one another with the kiss of love.

Peace to all of you who are in Christ. (ESV)

    ELLO… I read

I like verse 5,”Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.””

I like this verse because it talks about being humble. I think I am far to prideful and proud of myself I need humility more than probably anything. I may not say out loud like I’m so cool or I can do this but in my head my view is far to high of myself. If I view myself better than others how can I expect to serve them. I need to make sure that I regard others before I think of myself.

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

Satan wants to keep coming around to try and pick off those who are weak. He prowls around like a roaring lion, searching for someone to devour. This is why Christians need to be careful and alert. As this verse says, they must resist him, standing firm in their faith. The same is happening for fellow Christians all around the world. And Satan is looking for those who are the most weak. To the “Christians” who are slacking, he will try to slowly pull further and further away, desperately trying to grab their attention off of God and towards the things of this world.

I need to not get distracted here in this world, Instead, I need to be mindful and alert. I need to be watching out to see the devil trying to devour people. When I am faced with him, I need to stand strong in my faith, not falling into his temptations. He is the master of trickery and deceit. But with the power of the Spirit in me, I can fight against him and stand firm. And it is extremely comforting to know that the same kinds of suffering are being felt by my brotherhood across the world, all my fellow Christians. I can then come together with other Christians who are going through the same things and know how I feel. We can all talk to each other and plan out ways for practical accountability.

It is interesting that pride is related to anxiety. Our God is the all powerful Creator and Sustainer and yet we think that the outcomes of our little situations in life depend entirely on us. In Matthew 6:26 Jesus explains that if God is taking care of the insignificant little birds that He will definitely take care of us, His chosen people that He cares for. God is the one who let’s me wake up every morning and has my salvation in his tight grip, then why do I worry about other smaller issues if I trust Him with that? Casting my anxieties on God is something I have been working on and it is such a good thing to do, but the problem can be solved in the first place if I humble myself and trust God more with my life.

I just want to say that YOU guys strengthen MY walk. I am accountable to YOU TN’ers, because I CANNOT exercise hypocrisy. Not that I could otherwise, but oftentimes, when we are not in service, and we are tempted to think that, “no eyes are watching,” we may have the tendency to forget that GOD is watching, and we make concession and toleration for sins to creep into our lives, hearts, and actions. But serving at TN, I am strengthened by you and encouraged to stay the path and model what God calls us to. I just want to take the time to say THANK YOU for blessing me and contributing to my spiritual and personal growth more than you could ever know…

Be blessed today, as you already are…

    Love,
    Stacy

Like Steffen said, Satan is watching…prowling like a lion. God is on my side though and He is protecting me from him the rest of my days..being an example for others can sometimes be hard though! Sinful desires can get in the way..don’t want that to happen! 1 Corinthians 10:13 is something that IIII need to remember constantly. At school, I am surrounded by people who don’t believe in the true Gospel and they are the ones that are constantly watching me..and of course God! Like Stacy said, never let your guard down because you are always being watched whether you think so or not. XD I forget that at times..when I really shouldn’t! and OF COURSE I need to be an example for my fellow peeps here at True North. My True Northers are the closest friends I have, of course I should keep them accountable by keeping myself accountable for spiritual growth. :O confusing, I think not. :D MARANATHA!

  8. Josh Larson says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, it is important that we all humble our selves and realize that we are very small compared to God. i need to work on being humble and giving God the respect he deserves.

  9. Beth Lauder says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you.

Humility is a characteristic of Christ that we are called to emulate again and again in Scripture. It is not natural for us to have a lowly opinion of ourselves and a high opinion of others, yet that is exactly what we are called to do if we are Christians. Christ set a perfect example for us of this verse! He put His rights out of the picture, submitted to God’s will, and lived a perfect life and died the death that we deserved so that we could be made right with God. I think of Philippians 2:3-11 and how we are called to imitate Christ’s humility :
Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.
Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus:
Who, being in very nature God,
did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
    but made himself nothing,
taking the very nature of a servant,
    being made in human likeness.
And being found in appearance as a man,
    he humbled himself
    and became obedient to death—
    even death on a cross!
Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
in heaven and on earth and under the earth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord,
to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2 perfectly exemplifies how Christ humbled Himself and was then lifted up to a place of glory and exultation by God. I pray that I, too, would think not of myself and try to do my will, but think first of God and others and seek to do the Lord’s will!

  10. 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Casting your anxieties on God is something that feels like a weight has been lifted off your back once you do it! In past situations and some recent, I find myself getting all worked up and worried/anxious if something goes wrong, or feels wrong…. my immediate response is to fix it and make things better, which never helps and it usually makes things worse or more confusing. Now, I have realized that prayer, encouragement, and God’s word are what I should be running to whenever I feel anxious! I need to cast my anxieties on the Lord for he knows how to handle them and he knows what is best for me and what won’t harm me. I pray that I will cast my worries on him when I need help and that I will be in constant prayer, and for a gentle and quiet Spirit before God!

  11. Joshua Hackett says:

9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

Almost done with first peter, great chapter to end it with and especially this verse really made me think about accountability and how our brothers and sisters in Christ are being tempted with the same things we are we need to talk to them about what we are being tempted with so they can pray for us and we can pray for them…and if there is a man that falls down his brother can pick him up.

  12. Connor~AMEN~ Tobia says:

    Good Morning!!!

    Verse 11
“11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

This verse is telling us to be a temple of God forever where we resist the devil and follow our Lord. For if we are a temple Jesus will restore, confirm, strengthen and establish us just like Peter said he would in verse 10. We need to be a true Temple of God.

  13. Brittany says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

I loved these two verses! We should always stay humble and know that God has a purpose for our lives. I need to work on staying humble and letting God take control of my life rather then me leading my life. Verse 7 is so uplifiting! I know that I can always turn my anxieties and fears to God! It makes me feel so good knowing that he cares about my fears and anxieties and wants to listen and help me because he is a caring and loving God. I need to turn to God more through my struggles and when I am fearful of something or even when I am having a bad day, because God cares and wants to help me and guide me!

  14. Megan Okada says:

1 Peter 5:6-7 “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

Verse 7 is probably one of my favorite verses when I’m upset..the thing I go to when I’ m stressed is the Bible, and 1 Peter 5 is the first place I turn. Reading verse 7, telling us specifically to cast our anxieties on God because He cares for us, is such a calming thought to me. When I read it, I remember that I’m not alone in these earthly struggles, that God is there, He cares for me, and He’s waiting for the time that I will let Him in. I also really like verse 6 because it tells us that we need to humble ourselves so that at the proper time, God may exalt us. I like to read this verse with a few extra words in it…humble yourselves so that at the proper time, God will be *able* to exalt you. We need to understand that none of this is our doing. It’s all God and He should take all of the credit. We are told to not boast in ourselves, but in God. So…humble myself..boast in God…lay all of my anxieties on Him..Ok, I’ve got my agenda for the week. :)

  15. Max says:

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders.

Sounds like this verse is directed towards young people, so all of True North needs to take important notice of this one. God wants us to obey all authorities on Earth. And the closest authority in our young lives would be our parents. God wants us to be subject to them. So even when i don’t want to listen to my parents, it’s what God wants me to do so i’ll do it. How can we obey God if we can’t even obey our earthly parents? That’s why it’s so important.

  16. [DB] Derek Brower 2010 says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

How awesome is that last part? The Lord, the Creator of all things cares for us! We only deserve to be cast into hell yet we are given the chance of eternal life with Him one day. Everything that happens to us in this world is all a part of His will and we need to accept this and rely on Him fully. The confidence that He cares for us should drive us to do so many great things in His name throughout our lives!

  17. Kelsey Collins says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

This verse was great. I know I can find myself just wanting to live my life the way I want to, without Gods concent. If Im doing that, Im not trust that he’ll lead me. God cares for me and wants me to live a good life in Him. He knows that I cant do it alone and that He has to guide me. All it takes is for me to give it up to Him, and wait on Him. I know that sometime when somthing crazy is about to happen Ill quickly call my friend and ask them what to do next. Before I go and tell my friends and ask them what to do, I need to, like this verse says, ‘cast all my anxieties on him’. He wants to know what is going on in my life and wants to help me. I know from experience I cant do it alone. Its time to give up my anxieties to God and let HIM lead me life, not me.

  18. Nicole Waymire says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Hmm.. I don’t know how many times I have heard this from my family and friends, “Give God your anxieties, you will feel much better and He knows how to deal with them!” I thought that it was probably true, and I knew that He would do a better job with them than I would, that is a given. But it always kind of struck me as unfair, laying all my hardships and fears on my Savior? I don’t know, it just didn’t add up right to me. Coming across this verse in the Bible really just knocked out that false belief that kept me worrying too much! I have seen verses like this in my Bible reading before, but something about this one really just hit me hard. It doesn’t say “cast you anxieties on him, even though it really sucks for him and it’s going to hurt him.” No, it says “cast your anxieties on him, because he CARES FOR YOU.” God, the creator of the universe, cares for each and every one of us and is happy to take our heavy burdens off of us… If we are willing.
    THank you LORD!!

  19. Elise says:

10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.
12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.

The true grace of God is shown in that He allows us to suffer only a little bit while we are on earth and then promises us that we won’t suffer at all when we are in Heaven with Him. Humans have two choices in their life: Suffer for eternity in Hell while living for yourself on earth, or suffer a little bit on earth and have perfect happiness and contentment for eternity with God. Its amazing to me that there are only a handful of people who choose the second option. For those of us who have, God gives us such an amazing promise that through our suffering, he will restore us, confirm how faithful He is, strengthen our ability to fight against sin, and establish us to a position in Heaven we really don’t deserve. Then, Paul (who is writing under the influence of God himself) turns these truths into a practical command. He commands me and all other believers at the end of verse 12 to “Stand firm in it”. I need to be (and am commanded to be) reminding myself of God’s faithfulness, compassion, and power throughout my sufferings. If I truly do understand these attributes of Jesus, then I will have their truth at the center of my mind at all times, especially the rough ones!

  20. Melissa Cox says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

I’m so thankful that the Bible specifically tells us to cast our cares and anxieties on the Lord. We are told in scripture not to worry…that is a hard thing to obey unless we have something to DO with our worry. Fortunately, we are told to give it all to God. In Philippians 4:6,7 Paul tells us to “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything, with prayer and supplication with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God, and the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Thank you Lord for caring for me and wanting me to give all of my anxieties to you!

  21. Kyle Dallape says:

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

The beginning of this verse reminds me of the sermon Bobby gave about respecting our elders. And the second part is pretty much the “love you neighbor as yourself” clause. But all in all its a pretty legit verse :)

  22. Alyssa K :) says:

Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Humility can be a hard thing sometimes. It is important to not sing yourself praises (aka: brag) but let others praise you. I remember that after I became a Christian the people I looked to as my role models were the humble, quiet-spirited Christians I knew. Pride can be such a turn off to us, so imagine what a turn off it is to Christ. No one can compare to him, and yet some people in this world allow their egoes to inflate like a balloon. (not necessarily Christians usually…but in general). I need to make sure I think more of others, and try never to seem prideful. I want to be a humble servant of Christ, because he is the highest example of humility I know <3

  23. ELLA says:

This is by far the best chapter in 1 Peter.

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. 8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

Yet again be humble. Being humble is a very difficult thing but can be easier when you really rely on God about it. First not bragging and then putting others up before yourself. Selflessness can be hard sometimes especially when you think that you should be held higher. And then casting all anxieties on the LORD. I love this because he tells us not to worry in Matthew 6 and then here to by telling us that we can give our worries to Him. So many things in life can go wrong but remembering that Jesus is in control of everything is very comforting. Lastly to watch and know when the devil strikes so you can evade him is important. I know that I sometimes( maybe a lot of times) give in to so many evil things, but knowing that God is watching and that He knows what I am doing and also is protecting me tells me that I can stop all this with Him. And that I should go to Him and seek him before I try doing something stupid. Then on God’s side it will be even tougher because satan trys so hard to lead me astray, but I can’t give in.

    • Katie Melrose says:

I totally agree here, although verse 7 is short, it has so much meaning! Praying to God before talking to anyone else is most effective way, God wants us to put Him first in everything, even when it comes to laying our burdens on Him.

  24. j. watkins says:

“Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith.”

Constantly the devil is looking to bring us down, and like a lion, he is going to take down the stragglers! He is going to take down all of those who are not firmly established in Christ, or are straying from the trail.
In order to prevent this from happening, we have to keep a constant relationship with God, study his word, and “cast all our anxieties on him”(v.7)
We have to walk the path of righteousness, and keep in contact our brothers and sisters in Christ, because the stragglers–those who are alone–are going to be picked off. The devil is purposefully going to attack them because they are the easiest to bring down. And that is not a good situtation to be in. The bible says that
“If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have know it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.”

Not good; but we can prevent this from happening by casting all of our anxieties on God, and by keeping our relationships with Him and our brothers and sisters strong.

  25. Shelby Sawyer says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you

I really like this verse. This verse is so important to me because I struggle with being anxious in situations. But being anxious shows that I am failing to trust God in every aspect of my life. I pray that I would grow in my trust in the Lord so that I will not have to worry about being anxious.

  26. Victoria Martinez says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him because he cares

I loved this verse today because it talks about how we can reach out to God and express our problems to him. He would be more than proud of us to go to HIM for our problems because HE will know that we have trust in him. I am so thankful to have such a close relationship with God and I pray my relationship with HIM grows!

  27. jwade says:

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

it is easy to become proud but i need to fight it. i need to make sure that i am clothing myself with humility

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  28. Emily Knudsen says:

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

I really liked this verse because it pretty much says straight forward, the devil is like a lion he is always ready to devour us christians, yet if we do resist him and stand firm in our faith, we will not only be stronger in God, but also rewarded. A lot of times ill look at a non-christians life and think of how easy everything is for them. But its then i remember thats because their on satans team. And though they may not suffer a whole lot on earth, they will suffer in hell for eternity. So the reason why life is sometimes difficult for us true christians is because satan sees how we act. He knows how firm we are in Christ, and any chance he gets he`ll break that bond and send us to his bad team. But if we stand firm in God and trust in Him to help give us a way out when tough trials come our way, we will be okay. For here on earth, this short time, is the ONLY time we christians will suffer. And since we suffer for God now, just think of how great our reward will be when we enter heaven! And remember, we are not alone, someone else may be going through the same trial as you. Its just like the verse that says, “No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.” -1 Corinthians 10:13 :D

  29. Michelle Cammarano says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

What i think is so amazing is how God can be both judging and caring at the same time! I feel that its so much more exciting to obey a God who really does love me and really cares for me. I literally do not have to worry about anything because God will take care of me if i am obeying His will and if i have Him first in my heart and make Him my whole life. There is absolutely no reason to not have God first in my life…He is the only One Who can fully satisfy me and He alone can love me with no boundaries! Why try to solve things on my own when i have a perfect God who is willing to make things better in His time 100X better than i could ever even plan!I am so encouraged and excited to know that my God will take care of me. I dont have to let the things of this world come in the way of Him because I know that they can never, nor will they ever, fully satisfy me. I would much rather have God in my life than have all the ‘good’ things in the world be mine. God is permanent and so is His love. So I will make it known that Gods love is far more abundant than the love of the things and people of the world. I pray that I will grow stronger in my faith and that I will spread the love of Christ on through my words and actions
    Maranatha!

  30. T Moore says:

2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock

These verse really stuck out to me because they made think that I am next in line for being at the top (or end) of my True North era and that made me think how people might look up to me and how I (or all of soo-to-be seniors) should be role models, or as put in verse 3 “examples to the flock.” I know that there were a few senior during my earlier years at True North that I looked up to and I pray that I could be like them, setting a good example for others to follow, and that it would all lead to building someone up and to God’s glory.

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

I liked this verse also because I need to remember that I am still young and still have some stuff to learn. I need to be more humble and more subjective to those above me, whether it be my parents and obeying them or to Pastor’s and learning from their sermon. I pray that in the time to come, God would really do work in my life, leading me to Him and that I would be a humble servant for God.

  31. Katie Knudsen says:

Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

This verse is talking about the devil and how sneaky and suttle he is. He is always seeking someone that he can tempt to sin. Whenever you feel like something is tempting that you know is wrong its the devil!!! Don’t do it! The devil works so sneaky that once you fall in the trap it can be sooo sooo hard to get out, so don’t even tread near it. The devil will do anything he possibly can to get you to sin. A big thing that you may or may not realize that can cause you to sin are the people you are friends with or closest too. Make sure you are on guard all the time and think to yourself “is this going to glorifying God or the devil?” At the end of the day I often ask myself “Did God win the battle today or the Devil?”…which basically means did you do something to make the devil smile or God smile? I prayer that you can all say The Lord won the battle at the end of each of your day.

  32. Jessica K=) says:

whoops! i accidentally hit enter before I commented:/ haha:) Well, this verse reminds me that I can be an example to people older than me. I need to humble myself and remember that God opposes the proud. I also need to be subject to my “elders”-especially my parents. Things run so much smoother when I do as I’m told and don’t whine, complain, argue or quetsion them. I pray that God will give me patience and help me to humble myself in all my actions. I want to serve others more and be obedient:)

  33. Michaela Adler from my moms iPhone says:

This entire chapter is amazing. 1 Peter is an incredible book, amen? :D
I chose to write about verses 8 and 9 because it reminded me that I’m never alone in my struggles.
There is always another brother or sister in Christ going through the same thing I am, and to me, thats so encouraging.
Satan is always trying to find ways to bring us down and make us sin. We’re all tempted everyday.
His goal is to bring us down whenever he can, however he can.
But you can be sure you’re never alone because someone is either going through or has been through the same ordeals you are.
Thats why christian friends are so important.
Whenever you’re going through a hard time, you can reach out to them and they’ll always help you as best as they can.
You’re less likely to be taken down when surrounded by good christian friends.
And that is my prayer, to be surrounded by more christian friends that will only assist me in my walk and help me through trials I go through.
Praise His name forever and ever, amen.

  34. jeremy says:

i really liked vs 5 it reminds me how we need to be subject to people older than us.we need to have humility toward one another and be kind

  35. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Pride is a sin! I love how the beginning of this verse says “clothe yourself”.. as in putting it on like an article of clothing. Just like we get dressed everyday, this is something we need to do everyday! I am almost done reading a book that focuses a LOT on God’s thoughts toward pride and it’s something I want to make sure I am aware of in my own life. I want to make sure I aim for humbleness and remember that I am nothing apart from God. He gives all things.

  36. Natasha B. says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

I really like these two verses because they uplift and encourage me. Whereas to not dwell on worring about things with so much anxiety, however have God as my comforter who cares for me. I really like that alot. Cause we can get caught up in so much anxiety where it just gets to out of hand, i remember i used to struggle with this alot in the past, but knowing God is right by my side and cares so much for me, it brings me out of that worrying state of mind. So when you have to much on your plate, worring about every little thing, just give it up to God and He will guide you through. Talk to Him of whats wrong, He’s always there to listen, He wants you to come to Him and not face your troubles on your own. I want to set my pride aside and walk humbly before God,

  37. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

When I think about it, the time that I spend on earth really is nothing compared to eternity. We talked about this a bit at small groups last night, and it really hit home. I’m fired up to be standing 100% for God and not compromising just because I may be afraid of what others in the world may think of me.

  38. bill says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you

This verse helps me because often I struggle with being prideful. I need to realize it is a sin and stop it.

  39. Elizabeth T OCHSA Christian Club says:

Humility is one of the hardest things to do in my opinion. I am praying that the Holy Spirit will work through all of us and help us be humble!

9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

I love verses like these because it makes me realize that my “struggles” are not impossible to deal with. God has given them to me in order to test my faith and he will not give me something i can’t handle (1 Corinthians 10:13 talks about this :D i love this verse!)

  40. kelly causky says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you

I have heard the second part of this verse about giving our anxieties to the Lord many times, but I never realized that the first part of it tells us to be humble. Because when we don’t pray to God about our worries, that means we are trying to handle the situation ourselves and that is prideful. And it doesn’t make sense because the Creator of the Universe is way more powerful than us. So let’s trust completely in Him!

  41. katie baxter says:

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

The devil is always looking for those who are stumbling to tempt into sin. I need to make sure i am always resiting these temptations, and that i am standing firm and keeping my conscious clear. Like Bobby said this weekend, we need to take comfort and rejoice in the fact that our brothers and sisters in Christ are suffering for the same things that we are, and we can be encouraging one another! That is definitely someone i need to be working on this week.

  42. It's Daniel Yo! says:

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

I need to put more focus on being humble. Giving respect to people like my teachers can be especially hard for me because i get mad about a lot of stuff that goes on during school. It seems like everyone else in my classes are just afraid because they don’t want to get a bad grade for standing up for something wrong. Anyway, i’ve been working on keeping my mouth shuth and i’m going to continue to do so.

  43. “…this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.”

The truth of Christianity, the fact that God has suffered death for our sins, gives us reason that since he has died for us, how will he not also bring our faith to completion.

The God who is able will equip us to stand firm in his promises. Praise God!

    Maranatha!

  44. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

At the age of 17, there are a lot of people that are older than me. To be obedient to God’s word I am to be submissive to pastors, leaders, teachers, and any authority figure in my life. God has put them in my life for a reason and in order for me to grow closer to God, I must be submissive and be subject to those who are older and wiser. I need to grow in humility. Christ was the ultimate example of humility by becoming a human and living a life in submission to His earthly parents and teachers as well as His Father God. He died an undeserved death because of His humble obedience. I need to imitate that obedience and submit myself before others by being humble and gentle.

    • Katie Melrose says:

Yes! Two things I have been praying for: having a quiet/gentle spirit and submitting under authority! Good points Steph!

  45. Verse 8: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”

Yikes!! Satan is alive and out there in the world. He runs this sinful place, which means as Christians (not of this world), we need to be on our guard. Satan knows how to twist things and make them look good to us. He tricks us all the time. He is the constant deceiver. It seems like every time when I think Im doing really good spiritually, thats when Satan strikes. He tricks sin upon us continuously, and we NEED to fight it off.

    • So encouraging! I was thinking about this today actually, how the devil makes things appeal to us, and twists things to make them look good. This is a thought that i need to always have on my mind, so that i am always on my guard against the devil and my flesh.

  46. Murphy Danahy lowly servant of the living GOD says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

This is a great verse. Knowing that we can cast all of our anxieties on the LORD is such a good and wonderful thing. GOD can help us with everything that is going on in our life. We are never alone. I need to pray to GOD for relief from my anxieties.

  47. Jasmine says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

God promises that He cares for me and that I can cast all my anxiety on him. That is so awe inspiring. Jesus went through so much yet He is willing to bear my burdens,my problems, my weaknesses, my worries & anxieties. It is nothing compared to what He went through on the cross for me. Thank you so much Lord for prayer! It’s such an awesome privilege that I get to surrender my anxieties to the Lord!

  48. Jonny Wright says:

This chapter was fantastic. I remember talking to Pastor Bobby about how I can become a leader on my football team and I can see some ways how this verse can apply to my role in being both a spiritual and physical leader of my team. I need “not [be] domineering over those in [my] charge, but be examples to the flock” I need to be an example and become what a spiritual leader should be, someone who sincerely cares for his brothers and sisters. God has called men to be the leaders of the household, and I pray that I can learn as much now, before I’m a husband, about leadership and practice these learnings so that one day I may be a great spiritual leader as well as a husband and father. Now, the submissive side of the chapter. God wants us to be conformed to the likeness of His son, Jesus Christ. Jesus was the humblest doulos ever! He, God incarnate, went on to his knees and washed his disciples feet, something that house slaves would do. He died on the cross while being mocked and spat upon. That’s humility; that’s love. My desire is to show my love for God by being able to show humility because, frankly, what do I have to brag about? Nothing. I need to set God Almighty as the all in my life and make him my God where he justly belongs. Stop worrying about my own needs, I need to think about what can I do to make the church prosper. Each moment I need to look at my actions, fruits if I may, and say am I doing all that I can to be the best ambassador of Christ at this moment. If not, I need to fix that.

  49. Allen McAnlis says:

2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly; 3 not domineering over those in your charge, but being examples to the flock. 4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. 5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

As people under authority we need to be following their commands and showing people that we respect those that are over us. We need to take their commands because God put them over us for a reason. Also as elders of those younger then us, we need to be good examples so that they can follow in our path. If they see us behaving then they will behave too.

  50. Bryan Sonksen says:

    I read…

Verses 6-7… “Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.”

In these verses, there are two parts: one telling us to be humble and another telling us to trust in the Lord. As weird as it seems juxtaposing those two ideas in one sentence, they come together well because when we are humble, God will bless us and we will be able to confide in Him. I need to be more humble so that I will be able to fully trust in the Lord’s plan for me.

  51. LG says:

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour

I need to always be glorifying God with my life and actions!!! Never letting my gaurd down!!!

    Maranatha

  52. Shane McCuistion 2010 says:

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

This is a great verse for the youth of the nation. This isn’t saying if someone is older than you, then do whatever they say. They are saying to submit yourself, and be respectful. Serve them as your own Lord and Savior Jesus Christ would serve them. I know older people love it when you respect them and it really encourages them. It’s a really good feeling when someone is encouraged by you because it encourages you to keep going and it pleases the Lord!

  53. Sarah G.! says:

    2 shepherd the flock of God that is among you, exercising oversight, not under compulsion, but willingly, as God would have you; not for shameful gain, but eagerly;

This verse definitely applies to what Greg Peterson mentioned at an AWANA leaders meeting I attended on Sunday!! This verse is the perfect verse to read before I see my kiddos tomorrow!! There are times when I pray for my kids and help explain verses to them during handbook time, but it often doesn’t occur to me what kind of impact I may create on these girls. Sometimes, I won’t have enough patience for them and I decide to just help them get through their verses without thinking about whether or not they understand what they’re memorizing. These girls are always watching me…I need to be more aware of that and be a better example for them that they may one day benefit the Lord’s kingdom!! :D

  54. Mark says:

9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

To stand strong against the devil, we must have other people to keep us accoutable. Sometimes I think that Im the only one going through my struggles but this is never true!! There is always someone out there who is going or have gone through the same thing your going through!! Accountability is the key to fight off the temptations of the devil!! The only way to keep him away is to stand firm in our faith and use the bible, the sword of the spirit, to fight Satan off!! Remember always to pray!! God will be there for you no matter what and will never leave us!!!

    MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. Morgan Shermanator says:

Its chapters like these that pump me up and encourage me after a whole day of persectution….knowing that I’m not alone! God is there by my side, and I can cast all my worries of him.

4 And when the chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the unfading crown of glory. Dude MARANATHA!!! In a world full of sin and that is ruled by the devil…there is hope! If I keep standing firm in my faith only throught the power of God…I have something to look forward to. This whole hard Christian life isn’t pointless! I can look forward to that point standing before the holy Lord and he says “Well done good and faithful servant!” Wow…seriously Jesus come.

10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

This life is only temporary…and my eyes constantly have to be focused on him. When I’m getting persecuted by my teammates(which happens about every day!) I know that it is gunna pass soon! God is right there with me restoring my soul….and I can always cast my anxieties on him!

  56. Meisha Preston says:

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

I need to always be on my guard…looking out for temptation. It is everywhere and just when I feel like I have things under control there it is staring me in the face. I need to be sober-minded. I need to think rightly about sin and temptation and also about my own weakness. I do not want to be devoured by Satan!

  57. Anita says:

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

the part when it says younger, be subject to the elders…
i reallly like, cause me myself, i needa work on that! looking up to them,
respect and linsten to them as well. like my mom n dad.
and God is closer n closer to me, cuz im doing alot better.

    =)

  58. Katie Slusher says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Instead of anxiety, I should be casting all of my worries and concerns onto the Lord. Unfortunately too often my first response to these issues is to call a friend and share them before I give them to the Lord. I need to truly rely on the Lord for all things and trust him completely.

  59. I need to go to the Lord first with EVERYTHING! There is nothing that He does not know, or has not planned for me. This is something that i have learned to do this year, and have grown in a lot. There are so many situations that i have faced, where when i am fully trusting in him, and not worrying or relying on myself, He blesses me. I need to be “7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for [me].” The Lord of the universe cares for ME! That is awesome. I am so thankful for what Jesus has done for me, there is no way i can express it, so i should be honoring him by placing all trust, cares, and worries onto him. Also “10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.” This verse is so encouraging, because it tells me first of all that we will suffer -which should bring us joy as we are sufferings with christ- but when we are called to his eternal glory, he will be with us and restore us, i am looking forward to that day more than anything! But while i am here, though i will suffer, i will obey his commands and give him all the glory.

    MARANATHA!

  60. Matt Lawler says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

I am constanly worried or stressed about something and i know this needs to stop, not only is it unhealthy but it shows that i am not putting my full trust in the Lord. I need to remember that the Lord can help me through absolutely anything and He has a plan for me

  61. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

    What great encouragement!
We will go through suffering but it will only be for awhile. and then when the time is at hand God will restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish me. God is my hope. There is nothing greater than putting all my trust and hope in him. I know that my suffering is not forever, but through it he will give me strength when I am tired, he will restore me when I am week, and he will establish me when I am unstable.

  62. Haley Litz says:

9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world. 10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

What an awesome chapter!!! It has warning, yet also, encouragement! I am warned to resist temptation and sin and stand firm in the Word, but I am encouraged that, while here on earth, as a Christian, I will suffer, but it will be for only a little while. God is here to restore me, confirm me, strengthen me, and establish me!!! How awesome is that?? God is my strength and I have to stand firm in him by being firm in his word and standing firm and going back to the gospel daily!!!!!

  63. AUSTIN WILDMAN says:

This has a lot to do with what I was reading in Proverbs 3&4 today during tutarial about wisedom. Wisedom can be reached through God and through obeying your elders and listening to what they have to say. We need to listen and obey athority to those you deserve it, which in most cases are people that are older than us. I encourage everyone to read the Book of Proverbs to understand what wisedom is. IT is something that you can never get to much of.

  64. Marissa Ramirez says:

I liked how it said in verse 6 I think how we need to be examples of the flock and let people know we are part of Compass and we have true street cred as christians. how we can be example is how we acted outside of church. I know we all can be good around our tight true north friends, but who do people know you at school as. This reminded me when Pastor Bobby was talking about if he came to your school and came up too someone at your school would they know you as a christian or just another person at school. I hope we are all known as a christian at our schools.

  65. Christa Blakey says:

10 And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.

This is such an encouraging verse to me! All Christians will suffer and God has a plan in it. And all the way through it he will be there doing these four things for us–amazing! At Women’s Bible Study today, Stephanie Schwartz brought up how God is omnipresent–he is everywhere. Reading this tonight, I’m reminded of that truth and how if God sees and knows all things, what a comfort that no suffering I endure is outside of him!

  66. Katie Melrose says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you

I have read this verse so many times because its very encouraging. I worry alot and thats something that I have always seemed to struggle with but its so wierd, once i lift it up to God and pray about it I immediatlery feel so relieved and whatever that worry is I forget about it and it eventually works itself out, its truley amazing! Its times like that I really feel the presence of God. God is in control of everything, and everything that happens to me is part of His great plan, I might not like it at all but it is for His glory and that is why I am here on earth, to glorify Him. Just the fact that he cares for me is the best example of unconditional love, the thing that everyone seems to search for, and I have it!

    • Sara L. says:

This is so encouraging to me, Katie, because I struggle with worrying as well! It’s so true that He controls everything perfectly!

  67. Pastor Ben says:

Like I said yesterday, the warlike tone of 1 Peter has really stood out to me this time, and this chapter is also intense in its language! The devil is like a roaring lion seeking to devour people! You can’t just yawn that away. So what must I do t fight?

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Spiritual victory requires humility. Humility will express itself through prayer and dependence on God. This was a good reminder to me today as I fight sin in my own life and seek to wage spiritual war through the ministry at True North!

  68. christopheriksen says:

12 By Silvanus, a faithful brother as I regard him, I have written briefly to you, exhorting and declaring that this is the true grace of God. Stand firm in it.

I know that this was basically the main verse for when we started the Don’t Stop Standing series, but it impacts me once again when it says how we have the true grace of God. The large percentage of the world is lost, either searching for truth or not caring about it, but I have been so blessed to know the truth and be confident in it. In fact, the truth of the gospel gives me confidence even of perfect communion with the LORD God in Heaven forever. I need to remind myself of how great it is that I have been taught the truth and have been saved; its so awesome and for that reason this verse says to stand firm in it. LORD, please help me to rejoice in my salvation and praise you for it every day. Please help me not to be distracted but rather always be thinking about my new life in you and talking about it so that other might be saved as well.

  69. Austin Jones says:

”Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

It’s not always easy submitting to our teachers. There have been times when I thought “Why should I do what a non-Christian is telling me?” but then I realized that regardless of their spiritual health, they have authority over me. Even if a teacher is unfair and mean, we are called to submit to all elders and adults. Just as we saw with Nero, authority can sometimes be outrageously wicked, yet we are still called to obey and submit to them no matter what. By doing this hopefully our teachers will see the humble spirit in us and see that God’s working through us.

    Maranatha!!!!!!!!!!!!

  70. Jackson Dahl says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

I tend to let all the things I have to do for school stress me out, along with all the other things I have to do. This is foolish, however. It is clear throughout the Bible that God is in control of everything in my life, and he will take care of me. I do not need to worry, as I can “cast all my anxieties” on him. Furthermore, the God of the whole universe, creator, CARES for me, creation. That is SO encouraging. Even in stressful times, I can know that God will take care of it all!

  71. Ian H. says:

Another short-yet-awesome chapter with so much great stuff! I’m loving 1 Peter!

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

The command couldn’t be any clearer that it is for us, the young people. Just as Peter has been saying to submit to the government, to masters/teachers/bosses, and the like, he gives this final exhortation to submit. To whom? Those who are older than us. As teenagers, yes, God tells us right here to submit to and respect our elders. If I am doing that, not only will God be pleased and glorified, but it will be a great witness of Christ to others. People will most definitely notice something different in you if you’re a teenager submitting to elders! However, God is even more interested in the attitude that I have when I submit (or when I do any good deed, for that matter). As it says in the second part of the verse, He wants me to be humble towards Him, my brothers, and everyone else. God, please give me an attitude of humility in all that I do!

  72. Dominic Scarmardo (Dana!) says:

Sorry I’m so late tonight (if anyone reads this :P)

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

Its really empowering that God cares about me enough to let me put my anxieties on Him, especially that He’s going to exalt me! But it’s also really humbling. We talk about in our small small group how willpower alone will constantly make you fail in your struggles, and that if I want to defeat sin, I have to rely on Christ to give me the strength. Therefore, by acknowledging that I am too weak and powerless to save myself from sin, I exalt God and the need for Jesus Christ as a Savior, and in return God exalts me as well! Its hard in this feel-good you-can-do-anything society to put myself in the backseat and say that I’m too weak, but once I come to grips with the truth then I realize that God is truly way more powerful than I am.

  73. Mike says:

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

If this isn’t a motivation to stay far away from anything that might cause sin, i don’t know what is. There is never a moment in the Christian life where you can relax your vigilance over sin. In the moments when you seem to be experiencing victory, you need to be extra careful that you don’t fall. This verse was a good reminder to me to spend more time praying for the spiritual steadfastness of myself and the Christians around me, and to never slack off on the opportunity to encourage a fellow brother in Christ and keep them standing strong!

  74. Joy Talcott says:

11 To him be the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Everything was made by God and for God. He deserves praise and His Kingdom will reign forever. Seeing that Chrsit will be victorious in the end should motivate me for obedience now. “forever and ever” I cannot honestly fathom these words but I trust they are true and and am putting my hope in Him who is in control of all things present and all things future.

  75. “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

i Love this chapter and these are a couple of verses that stand out to me. God opposes those who are prideful in their actions. It is easy to be prideful for doing good works. It reminds me to do good works for God and his glory, not for peoples response or my pride. I will make it one of my goals to be humble in my walk with the Lord. I must be on the watch and ready for Satan to attack. He is on the prowl just looking for someone to take down. I cannot let Satan do that to me! I must build up my relationship with the Lord and gain knowledge and strength to resist the devil and the ways of the devil! Sometimes we think that we are the only ones being tempted and we feel like the are having “the worst” day ever, but the truth is that there are tons of other christians suffering the same things! Christians must stick together so we can all resist sin and temptation together! Im pretty sad this is the last day of 1 Peter :( What a great book!

  76. Shossaraulston says:

6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, 7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
I really need to work on this, I need to learn to think of others before myself and to think of them as more important that I am. I need to realize that all the things I worry about don’t matter if I trust in the Lord and have a strong faith because he will take it off of my mind and I won’t have to deal with it anymore! I am so so so sooo thankful for this stress relief that I can always have!

  77. Sara L. says:

7 casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.

This verse is particularly convicting for me….but so encouraging. He cares for me. And that in itself is amazing. I know that I can trust Him in everything, in every bad situation and every good situation. I need to make sure I’m not trying to do everything myself, trusting in myself….I will fail if that’s my path. But I pray that that won’t be my path, because I know the truth of God’s Word.

  78. Dan Blankenship says:

    1 Peter 5

8 Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. 9 Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.

What a great reminder to all Christians. Peter reminds us to always be alert and watchful because Satan (the great accuser) is looking to devour and destroy or relationship with God. We must resist his evil schemes with a solid foundation in our faith. Satan’s major target in our lives is our faith. I am so encouraged that I am sharing in the same suffering as not only my fellow brothers but brothers around the world.

Ephesians 6:16-20 16 In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; 17 and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, 18 praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, 19 and also for me, that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the gospel, 20 for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

  79. ~Elizabeth Reeves~ says:

5 Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”

Um that is intense. This is right on! Especially since I am younger, I really need to be under my elders. I cannot act like I am above them in some way! This verse is sooo important to always know because I have teachers I should respect at school and parents I should respect at home too. I really should memorize this verse because it’s not that long, and it’s always a good topic to tell someone at school too! I am going to be a subject to my elders, meaning I need to do what they tell me, and respect them.
