Greeting
1:1 Peter, an apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who are elect exiles of the dispersion in Pontus, Galatia, Cappadocia, Asia, and Bithynia, 2 according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in the sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience to Jesus Christ and for sprinkling with his blood:
May grace and peace be multiplied to you.
Born Again to a Living Hope
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look.
Called to Be Holy
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17 And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20 He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you 21 who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And this word is the good news that was preached to you. (ESV)

25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
This is a really encouraging verse. No matter what is going on, no matter how crazy tihngs might seem to be, the Word is always constant and always the same. He’s always here for us, no matter what! God’s word remains and always will! That is really encouraging!
amen to that! It would be ever so baad if it didn’t last forever.
Great comment!
Well, here we go with the book of 1 Peter again. Hopefully it is starting to seem familiar to you as you read it. We preached through all of chapter 1 in our Don’t Stop Standing series so you can always check out those sermons on our iTunes podcast!
I love how chapter 1 begins by describing our salvation in Jesus Christ!
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
This verse especially jumps out to me: that we are for sure going to heaven as Christians! I know that sometimes it seems far away or we wonder when/if it is going to happen. However, it is so encouraging to consider the reality that we will someday be in God’s presence, beholding his glory and singing his praises! Can’t wait!
Hope to see all of you at True North this weekend!
Hello Pastor Bobby!
My name is Elizabeth and I am friends of the Schwartz’s. I just wanted to say that your iTunes podcasts have really helped me understand God’s plan more and what it means to be a Christian. They also have inspired me to start reading the Bible everyday because reading God’s word is more important than I ever realized. So I just wanted to say thank you! God Bless
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I really liked this verse because a lot of time people portray trials as bad things. But when trials come, we should rejoce! Trials mean that we are letting people know that we are christians. Like ive said, we are standing up and standing out! Be diffrent in a good way. Be a light and examples to others. We need to show Gods love in the best way possible. We can even just ask if they want to join us in the christian club. And who knows maybe the person will even want to come to church! you never know what will happen when doing christian things. Bedsides the least they can say is no. So what are we waiting for, God could come back in an hour, or even tommorow. Lets be ready for Him!!!
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
I like these verses because it shows us to stand strong in our faith and not to be conformed to the world or our passions of the flesh because God called us to be holy and as Christians we should follow after Him. We need to set our mind on God’s amazing grace.
24 for “All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
This verse is so encouraging to me! It is such an amazing thing that Gods word will remain forever! It is nothing like anything on earth for everything on earth will be destroyed. God’s word is everlasting!
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
I love these verses because they indicate that we have to stand strong on God’s grace, preparing to face Christ in heaven and worship Him! I love that this verse says to be obedient and to not be taken over by earthly things! I pray that God will help me stay strong in his word everyday and live for his glory and that I wont give into the world but keep my eyes directed on Him!
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
I like the contrast in these verses…we are not to live lives that give in to our sinful nature, but lives of holiness to God. Every day of my life is a pursuit of holiness. It requires effort and self-denial to be holy, the Holy Spirit does not force holiness upon us. Since I have the Holy Spirit I have the ability to fight off my sinful urges and choose to follow His leading toward holiness. My desire is to be more like Christ with each passing day. I am committed to fighting my sin and surging forward in my sanctification, even if it costs me free-time, comfort, or popularity. Who’s with me?
3 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. great verse love it.
24 for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
Wow, this is so true! This scripture just proves once again that everything we do on this planet, in the tiny ounce of life that we live on earth just pails in comparison compared to the everlasting Lord’s bountiful glory, grace, mercy, and love toward us. So that I should put all of my faith and well being into the hands of God in order to walk by faith. Through that faith I may store up my treasure in the heavens. However most importantly build my relationship with God as I continue this journey here on earth as a beacon of light to all of the lost souls that walk the face of this planet. Everything, and everyone will fall on their knees on the day of our salvation. So that we should be eternally grateful in the works of the Lord, and should offer every span of time for Him, and nothing else. That I should know always in any situation that He will protect me and carry me through if it is out of love for Him.
GO GOD!
According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
This is talking about how Christ died on the cross for our sins and because of this we have the gift to go to heaven if we accept and choose to believe in him. I love how our salvation is “imperishable” and will never be lost if we are true christians. Thank Jesus for what he has done for you today!
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory
This is what we call faith. Trusting in Him without being able to see Him is harder then some may think. But the proof of Him is all around us. God’s fingerprints are everywhere. This is the way we can “see” Jesus.
According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
I am so thankful for all God has done for me!!! That he has saved me!!!! And he has changed me!!!! I pray that each day I will grow closer to Christ!!!
Maranatha
We need to be in Gods word everyday to get stronger as a Christian for God. He is the only one who can save us from going to hell and the way he does that is giving up his son to die on the cross for our sins.
7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I liked this verse because it tells us that we need to keep our faith. Sometimes we tend to drop it, and go on with our lives as if we are the god, and everybody has those times, but we need to remember Christ through our daily walk with him. This is such a struggle that I have, to give my life to God, but here is a verse that is going to help me and many other people have. This is a good verse to turn to.
See you tonight =)
4 to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you, 5 who by God’s power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Its so encouraging to know that God himself is guarding an inheritance for us in heaven. No matter what I face here or what I can’t have here, I am going to have something much much greater waiting for me in heaven. On top of that, this verse tells me that there is a salvation that is going to be revealed in the last time. I haven’t even truly experienced my salvation until I am in heaven! I need to remember God’s faithfulness and goodness through his unperishable promises to me when I am suffering over petty things on earth!
Okay, so we have read this Chapter a lot and it is such in awesome book! And I usually remember verses but this one I did not and it stood out to me a lot.
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
Christ died for me! WOW, because of Him I am able to be born again and spend eternity with Him in heaven. ALL because Christ died! Wow! I can never get over that. God is so great and powerful that He could easily get rid of us. YET instead He sent His ONE and ONLY Son down to die for me which is equal to nothing. I mean God is so great and I am like the size of a blood cell to Him, I am so small and sinful, that God should not have done that. But He did, because He loves you and me! Wow, it makes me think of when I was little and my sister and I would see whose arms could reach father in the amount of love. And God’s arms are so big, they are eternal, so if I were to play that game with Him, He would win. :]
Glory to God for He is eternal and great and magnificant and I am in awe of how great He truly is. :]
***Great is the God we serve!!!***
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials,
7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ
These two verse literally jumped off the page and slapped me in the face. I am being put through the trials I’m experiencing now because it is necessary. God knows what I’m doing and the genuiness of my faith is more precious than gold Peter says. This was so comforting because I’ve known for awhile that this trial is going to increase my faith and it already has, but this verse is exactly what I needed to hear. Because all this suffering will result in the “praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ. ” Which also reminds me that it is NOT all about me, but it is all about GOD and HIS glory!
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,
These two verses also decided to come slap me in the face today, which is so amazing because I asked God to show me what He wanted to show me when I read His word today so I’m extremely grateful! =D I’m God’s child, and in order to show that I need to be holy like He is holy. That means that at school, I should not cuss, or laugh at dirty jokes, or have a worldly mindset. But have the maranatha mindset because that is imperishable while the world is perishable. I need to pray for strength and wisdom to resist worldly temptation and truly be a child of GOD.
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
I *love* 1 Peter!!! This verse in particular was verse that stood out to me. It’s so true that we cannot see God, we never have seen Him, and yet we still believe in Him and rejoice with a joy that is “inexpressible”. Our joy is inexpressible. The faith that we have to trust that God is there, that He’s listening and that He’s waiting for us to come to Him, is one that we cannot express. It’s so true! I love God, I never want to stray away from Him, and yet, I’m not really sure how I would explain that to a non-Christian. It doesn’t make much sense to live for and love someone that you have never seen and can’t see, but we do it anyway. Although we cannot physically see Him standing next to us, just looking around, He’s EVERYWHERE. The beauty of this earth came from God and He is in it.
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
I need to keep my soul pure and not conform to the things of this world. It is easy to give into temptation and listen to the world but I need to strain my ears toward God and listen to what He wants me to do. I need to love all others with brotherly love, this includes being patient with everyone. I love that we Christians have been born of “imperishable seed”, reminding me of the awesome fact we get to spend eternal life with the Lord! that is so exciting and motivates me to live a life more glorifying to God. God’s word is powerful and lives on. I need to apply it to my life. God is so holy, faithful & merciful
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action…
I really thought this part of verse 13 was cool because it places such a strong emphasis on how we are to focus solely on Christ in this life. This phrase literally means “girding up the loins of your mind”, which comes from a picture of people picking up their robes and running. As Christians, we are called to gird up the loins of our minds by getting rid of all our worldly thoughts and ambitions, and having a clear and sober mind focusing on the kingdom of God! I need to not be thinking of worldly ambitions, like making money or having a lot of friends, but rather think about how I can life my life in such a way that God gets the maximum glory! I need to have a clear mind so that I can focus on God’s plan for me! Please give me wisdom Lord, to discern Your will through Your Word and to have a 100% devotion and focus on You!
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
This is a great verse. The Lord calls us to obey his commands if we love him and follow in his footsteps and not to be conformed by the world. It is very easy to find yourself slowly becoming more conformed to the world if we are not reading and praying and occupying our time and thoughts with the Lord. I pray that I would be in the word a LOT more and that I would make my life a devotion to the Lord and make war against sin so that I am not conformed by this evil world.
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
I love this because it shows we need to resist the unholy temptations of the world. We are ment to be friends of Jesus not friends if the world so we need to pray that we won’t conform to society and the world, but remain in the light of god!
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
The word of the Lord remains forever! I love this! Everytime I have a problem, I run to God’s word and I know that I will find the truth in it, because he was, he is, and always will be! I love that he is unchanging and what he says stands til the end of time! This is also comforting to know, that through his soveriegnty, all things are already planned out and God knows everything! How could I not put my trust in such a faithful Father? All other things in this world will soon fade away, which is why I don’t want to invest in these things. I’d rather put my focus on godly things that are meaningful and glorifying to God.
I read…
Verses 14-15… “As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct”
Sometimes as Christians, we fall into the trap of being enticed by our former ways. When we sin, however, we feel the guilt and shame that when we were not Christians, we did not feel. I pray that we would all keep each other accountable and not allow our fellow Christians to fall.
1Pet 1:25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.” And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
We should learn it, understand it and let it change us today! Why else are we here?
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
We should not hold grudges against people, yet be loving towards all, even our enemies. Christ says not only to “love your neighbor as yourself” but he wants us to “love our enemies” and forgive them. I liked how in Bobby’s message the other week, in discussing how we should love one another, he said to not treat others how they should be treated, yet how you would want to be treated (aka: the golden rule). It can be so refreshing to see people living out the golden rule because it is rare today in Orange County. Kindness goes a long way. I am going to pay special attention to the way I treat others this week and try loving people through random acts of kindness
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
i love when it says “though you have not seem him, you love him. though you do not now see him you believe in him and with joy”
i love that because thats soooo true…i believe and i live for him<3
and i rejocie everyday!
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, , 23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; 24 for
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25 .”
And this word is the good news that was preached to you.
the part where it says "love one another earnestly from a pure heart"
i like it alot, because you should show them the love beause the hloy spirt is in you.
love everyone as yourself.
&
i LOVE the part- but the word of the Lord remains forever.
amen to that!!!
Have the Holy Spirt in you….
share the Gosple to everyone
thats why we are here….so people can get saved
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Wow! I loved this verse during the whole time I was reading this chapter I could not get this verse out of my head. It is so true I have never seen Jesus but I am madly in love with him! And i love how it says, “you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory…” Because we are so in love with our God and know how much he loves and cares for us it makes us so joyful and filled with his glory! This was such a good verse today!
I love verses like 6 and 7 because they remind me of how I constantly need to be challenged in order to see the sincerity of my faith
16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
This verse has always stood out to me while reading through 1 Peter. We are called to be holy, for God is holy! Of course no one is perfect, only God is perfect…. but we can glorify the Lord through everything and live holy and blameless lives for God! Knowing what is right and applying it with actions definitely will show outwardly! While doing that, we are also examples to other people and it is important to plant the seed and encourage others with their walk with God. I pray that I will live above reproach, be a good example for others, and stay on fire for Jesus Christ forever!!!!
Being born again is such an amazing thing. To be able to see a difference in your life and other people to notice it makes it much better. Since our heart has changed we see things differently than others. we know to love one another even if they’re our enemies. We start to encourage eachother. We want to make them grow as a christain and not fall away. I remember pastor Bobby saying that we should build them up so that are higher than us. Naked me think of our last sermon of if you want something done for you you should do it fir someone else. Also being holy since God is holy. Like Brooke said we are not perfect. Therefore we should learn from our mistakes and try not to make those mistakes again.
16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
This is a good passage to reflect on. Since no one can be perfect, only God, so we cant be exactly like him, but we should strive to be just like him because he is the best example for how we should live our lifes.
to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you,
What a great encouragement to know that this life on earth isn’t all there is. Heaven is our reward and we get to spend forever and ever plus one living there. I pray that I can store up treasure in heaven and not be so worried about treasure or lack of treasures here on earth.
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,
I find it captivatingly powerful that we can have such a deep, consuming love for Someone we have not yet touched or seen with our eyes. And yet He is my soulMate. And not just MINE, but YOURS, TOO, if you have been born again. I am intrigued and overtaken by this.
This same love from Him enables me to have this love for my brothers and sisters in Christ. I had known by e-mail a wonderful woman at church who heads up our Prayer Team at church. She and I had an immediate connection that was so profoundly impactful to both of us. But we hadn’t met. Until last weekend after service. And it was as though we already knew each other so well–true, authentic sisters because of the fact that we share Christ’s love.
I love this. And it’s a difficult thing to grip and come to receive, if you have not yet declared your faith unto Him with your heart and life. It’s difficult, because the PEOPLE in our lives, who seem so SURE and so ABLE–because after all…they’re tangible, right?! They are people we can touch and hug and see. And hear. But if THEY can hurt us so badly, then how could I ever trust JESUS or GOD, Who I CAN’T see…?!
That’s the quandary…it is my fervent prayer for you, if you are one of those still standing at the crossroad, that you take that risk, and find out for yourself just how legit our God really is. How He has it all perfectly worked out for Your good and refinement, and for His glory. Take that plunge. You will not be sorry. And…you will live forever at the side of the Greatest Love you will ever know.
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
This is a great verse. Here we see that because of JESUS’s sacrifice, we can have eternal life through him. We are born into eternal life, and are no longer of perishable seed, but of CHRIST, in whom we will live forever.
7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ
..testing of our faith…sometimes it can be hard, but this verse shall really help me. It’s more precious than gold..to my best friend, I like to say “that’s gold” or say that she is gold. XD It’s weird but now whenever I say that, I shall be reminded of this verse and use it in my everyday life.
Glory and honor and praaaaise! I’m stoked to be one day worshipping the Lord in Heaven! MARANATHA! Lord come soon!
I find that this verse really reminded me of today’s worship night.
5 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
OH how I wish to be holy like Christ!! That is my desire; to be blameless and pure for the Lord!! One day, God will give me a perfect body that never sins!! I can’t wait for that day I see Christ and worship him in His dwelling place!! Lord, help make me more holy here on this earth that people may see you in me!!
MMMMMMMMMMMMMM!! It’s going to be ABSOLUTELY AMAZINGG!–to worship the one who saved you face to face! Can’t wait. d:- )
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
This is such an amazing promise! We can be filled with an inexpressible joy and glory, and receive salvation of our souls by putting our faith in Him, the Lord Jesus Christ. We deserve none of this, yet God in his love has given it to us, his enemies. Amazing Grace!
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
This is very promising. No matter what happens God’s word is forever. Nothing interfers with God’s word because it is final and nothing can change it. Earthly temptations are only temporary but the kingdom of heaven lasts forever.
15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Many people belive it is impossible to be holy because it takes being perfect like Jesus Christ was. This is obviously not true because God commands us to be holy and He will not command us to do something that is impossible. If we desire to please God and follow His commands fully we can and will indeed be holy. We need God’s help and cannot do it without the help n support of godly believers. We must make sure to fill our life with good goddy people so that we may help eachother to achieve holiness.
14 As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance,
Before I was a Christian, I was enticed by the things of this world. I was a sinner enslaved to sin. However, because of Christ’s death and resurrection, I am freed from that sin. It would be stupid of me to return to those enticements. I need to make sure that I am continualy battling all sin in my life. That I am constantly examining God’s Word to reveal how I should be living as his obedient child. Just like Bobby said in his sermon tonight, I need to be in his word so that I may know how to live. I pray that my life is conformed to his will alone and never to any of my former passions!
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,
Great chapter! Its so crazy that we can have so much joy and faith in someone whom we have never seen! If you think about it, it takes more faith to believe something came out of nothing, then to believe in a creator. Sure, we have never seen Him, but the way He reveals Himself in the world today, shows that He IS alive! I can look outside on beautifull sunnny summer day and only think of how amazing God is! Singing to God tonight at worship night gave me this joy of forever being with Him! I love God so much, and the joy He gives Christians is completely unexpressible. After knowing what God has done for me, All I can do is rejoice and happy. I dont deserve Him, yet I get Him. It doesnt make sense but that is true love, and it brings me joy! I need to be forever praising God for the things He has done for me every single day of my life!
Sorry that was me, Kelsey, not Emily! She was on here earlier today!
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
My goal is heaven, being in the presence of the God that saved me. I cannot imagine anything better! The trials I face now are simply a preparation, it is time for me to store up treasure in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. I need to keep this in mind when I’m going through a trial or being tested by fire. It is all worth it in the end no matter how painful it is now.
18 knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
I am so completely unworthy, but yet Jesus still died a brutal death to save me from my sins. This fact is all to often looked over and talked about lightly, when in reality, it is a HUGE DEAL! Jesus, the perfect man, took my place and the death the I rightfully deserved. I am so filled with complete awe and thankfulness and wondering how He could ever love me so much. It wasn’t money, or possesions that Jesus freed me from my sins by, but with His own life! Jesus I am so thankful! You deserve all praise!
“Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory”
Definitely. This verse embraces everything that we did tonight in worship!
None of us have seen God, but we’ve all come to know him through the salvation that he has provided us!! A salvation that we are so gifted to have! Just think about it–we are so undeserving, and yet God has chosen us to be saved for his Glory. How amazing it is to take part in this wonderful gift! God is wonderful.
ELLO… I read
I like verse 16,”since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.””
I like this verse because it talks about what GOD wants us to be like. HE wants us to be like HIM if we are HIS children then we will act like them and most children act as their parents do. I need to make sure that I am set apart from anything that will cause me to sin.
CYA
13 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I’ve been thinking a lot about the concept of grace this week after reading the book Practice of Godliness. God has given us everything we need to be satisfied, and his grace is sufficient for me! I need to make sure that my mind is set fully on that concept that I am saved by grace alone!
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
1 Peter 1:24-5
Meaningless things. Perishable Things. Our lives seem to revolve around these type of things, which, in reality will become unknown to existence someday. Like I say, life is meaningless in an atheist’s point of view. You live. You die. Millions of years from now no one will remember who are were or what you accomplished on this earth. But there is one thing that will not fade away (actually several), that is the word of God, and everything written in this everlasting book.
This is the reason why I should not be prioritize the things of the world that will perish such as school, food, even the air I breathe, before the word of God. The thought of, “What can I do to glorify my loving God?” should come before the first breath of my day in the morning. Metaphorically speaking.
Even greater than this, I believe the things of the world, such as evil and sin will cease to exist on earth. Why should I invest my time in things that will perish? I rather be building my relationship I have with Jesus Christ, and performing the good deeds that he commanded me to do. Something that is eternal. And the Bible does promise that.
I’m thinking about Heaven a lot today and looking forward to it so much! Maranatha! It would be so great if Jesus would come back tonight! Even if He doesn’t, I know that when He does come, or when He takes me home to be with Him, I’ll get to be in His presence for eternity. I am so thankful that because of His great love for us, God provided a way of salvation–through the precious blood of Jesus. Thank you Lord.
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
The people receiving this letter were not going through fun times. They were going through hard trials! But no circumstance – no matter how bad – could take away the life they had in Christ. This is true for all Christians, including myself. Nothing can change the fact that I have an undying inheritance in heaven! I should be joyful no matter what the circumstances! This is a great thought to chew on after the worship night and as I fall asleep tonight.
8 Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,—I love this because it reminds me of why I need to have 100% faith and that I have a born and again and I have a hope that I am going to see my Father one day in heaven and I will be praising him 24/7! I am sooo excited!!! And now that I have been saved, this hope fills me with joy and it just makes me want to shine the light of Jesus through my life. I am so happy that I have confidence that God reigns over everyone and HE is in control of my life! I want to live my life full out for him with a whole heart and I just want to be looking forward to heaven and not being associated with the things here on this earth! I give every to you LORD, do whatever you like!
MARANATHA!!!!
all glory, honor, power is yours!! AMEN!
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead
So excited to be reading 1 Peter together again! This verse is awesome in praising God for the work of salvation that HE does! Thinking of the sermon tonight at True North, it’s not our works that make us acceptable to God. He made us, who were dead, alive in Christ, what an amazing reality that I am so grateful for! Praise the one who paid my debt and raised my life up from the dead!
“All flesh is like grass
and all its glory like the flower of grass.
The grass withers,
and the flower falls,
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
Nothing on this earth lasts. It is so important for me to build up my treasure in heaven instead of focusing on what’s here on earth for me to enjoy.
Both verses 24 and 25 are a great example of just how eternal our God is!
When I read: for All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever, it truly helps me to put things back into perspective and continue to put our God above all else!
But although every single thing in this world will be destroyed in the next coming of our Lord, it does not mean we should ignore the many great and Godly things this world has to offer! Because our God wants us to see his incredible Creation and spread His Word to as many people as we can, so instead of closing yourself off from the outside world, we as Christians should travel all around His Creation spreading the Gospel!
1Peter 1
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
I am so thankful that thru God’s mercy I have been given a new life thru Christ’s resurrection. We have a hope in Jesus Christ that produces faith and secures our inheritance that cannot be taken away. There is no where I would rather be right now than resting in the confidence that I have in my salvation thru Jesus Christ. I love Peter’s thankful heart. The hope that Peter is referring to here is not that I am hopeful but that we have a real living assurance of our inheritance in Heaven.
23 since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;
I love re-reading this chapter! Seeing how God has provided us salvation through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ gets me excited and overwhemled with awe and thanksgiving! This salvation is by the mercy of God and it can never perish! This is incredible and I cannot wait to see my Maker face to face.
Thank you Lord for your Word that remains forever. While other things pass away, it stays the same! Can’t wait for True North tomorrow morning!
I’m starting to really appreciate and love 1 Peter
“And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile,”
After we read through Hebrews, this reminded me of Abraham who waited for his true promised home in Canaan his whole life. Abraham ‘sojourned’ throughout lands most of his life, in fact as if he didn’t belong, but only a temporary visitor, because he was trusting in the promise God made to him.
The same is with our lives, we are not of this world, our life is to come in Heaven with Jesus. Now we should conduct ourselves with fear in our exile.
There is only one life to live, only one sophomore year, only one chance to live as 16, only one chance to live this day for Jesus. The days are ending and we can’t waste any of them.
I can imagine in Heaven, before Jesus, some profound regret, some wishing that we wouldn’t of wasted our life, our 16th year of life, our summer, our sophomore year, our second semester, our time that we could of stood up for Jesus boldly. The ‘should of’s’ and ‘could of’s’ will be many; I don’t doubt it. Yet, I believe that if we conduct our lives in fear now, understanding the worthiness of our Lord now instead in the future when it is too late, then we will rejoice in heaven knowing that our life did not go unused. We did not waste our life…
Maranatha! Come soon!!
16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
This verse calls us to be like Christ!! We are expected to strive to be like Christ and live holy lives!! However, God knows that that will never happen!! That is why he sent his son to die on the cross for our sins so the sins we committ can be forgiven by the blood of Christ!! However, we are still called to live lives pleasing to God! Just because Christ forgives our sins doesnt mean we can just go out and sin a bunch on purpose and know God will forgive us and then do it again!! We are to live as Christ did, or strive to live as close as we can, which doesnt come any where near close!! When we do sin, God will forgive us, and we should learn from that and work hard to do that same thing!!
MARANATHA!!!!!!!!!!!!
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart,
This verse talks about two things. Having a pure, clean heart (alongside a clear conscience) and loving the people around us. The first one is directly related to righteousness, as our earthly hearts are full of sin and wicked. Although I have been saved, I still greatly struggle with sin, and my heart and thoughts aren’t always pure, and things that keep my conscience clear. I need to make it a battle to keep myself from sin, striving for righteousness in the highest sense – Godliness. Secondly, I need to continue to show love to everyone around me, especially the people that treat me wrongly. As Pastor Bobby said in a sermon a few weeks ago, I should be treating others the way I would like to be treated, not how they treat me – the Golden rule. I want to be a person that shows love to non-Christians, demonstrating God’s love through me, as well as a person that deeply loves my brothers and sisters in Christ – encouraging them, keeping them accountable, and never fighting a foolish fight with another Christian. If I am not loving other Christians, how am I to love non-Christians? I pray that the Lord will really help me to amplify both the quantity and quality of love I show.
15 but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
Though I can never be perfect, I need to always keep perfection in my sights. I will never hit the target right on, but I always need to be aiming to get as close as I can get. I need to not let myself get discouraged with failure. By my human nature, I will fall down and fail. There will be times where I fall into temptation and sin. However, I can’t let that get me down. I need to listen to my conviction, repent of my wrongdoing, and get back on track for pursuing godliness. Just because I can’t keep myself as a fully pure, distilled glass of water, that doesn’t mean that I dump clods of dirt into it. I need to rely on the Holy Spirit in me to empower me in living a godly life to fulfill the good works that God has already planned out for me to do ahead of time!
7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
I love this visual. It givev me motivation to perservere when things get tough. Gold and other precious metals are generally refined and made stronger in fire. That is how it is when our faith is tested.
6 In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ
These two verses would be great for someone who is not yet a Christian, or not sure if being a Christian is the right thing. Here it says that even though we may go through trials on earth and may be tested throughout our lives, we still can look forward to the day that the Lord returns and we will be in Heaven with him.
22 Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart
This verse is definitely a reiteration of ‘love thy neighbor’ and it really caught my attention. I’ve been trying to do this and reiterating it will help me out.
25 but the word of the Lord remains forever.”
i love this verse ! it shows that God loves us so much. When were going through tough times He is always there for us no matter what. He is always constant with His words (The Bible) and we always have Him to look towwards(:
